The Polls

In all 3 regular polls, the Tigers are now 3rd, trailing Boise State and Number 1 Oregon. However, tonight we watch on ESPN the unveiling of this week's BCA standings, and Auburn is Number 1.

We know that this is only as good as the next game. We don't keep winning, it won't matter. Oklahoma was Number 1 in the first BCA rankings last week, and they lost to Missouri this week. Fame can be very fleeting.

However the season turns out, I think it's a milestone that this program is, even at this early point, Number 1 in the BCA standings. Who would have thought it when Gene Chizik was hired as the Auburn coach before last season that the program would rise this far so fast. Nobody!

Kirk Herbstreet says Auburn is a one-man show and that we have no defense. I laugh. Sure, without Cam Newton we probably wouldn't be 8 & 0, but that hardly means Auburn is a one-man show. The offensive line is pretty good. We have good receivers who help make Newton look good. Our defense is not a shut-down defense, but it has been strong in the second half of every game and especially strong in the 4th quarter. Herbstreet is oblivious to such gradations of the truth.

One thing's for sure: this has been an unexpectedly interesting season so far. Isn't this always the case with a good Auburn team?
