Beating Texas Southern

With Freddy home we had intended to go to the game in Auburn to experience the new arena but threat of inclement weather kept us home.  We watched the game streaming on ESPN3.  After trailing most of the game the Tigers pull out a 61 to 60 win.  A win is a win.

Beating Xavier

Last night we caught the last half of Auburn beating Xavier 89 to 88 in double overtime.  It was exciting to see the Tigers win a big one.  This program is on the upswing with Coach Pearl.

Jakell Mitchell

Yesterday I woke up hearing first thing that Coach Muschamp was our new DC.  Today I wake up hearing first thing that freshman football player Jakell Mitchell has been shot to death at an Auburn apartment complex.  How sad.

Boom!

Freddy calls first thing on this lovely Saturday morning.  Malzahn has landed his man.  Will Muschamp returns to the Plains as our DC.  How exciting!!!

We Wait

We wait to see who our next DC will be.  In the meantime, we know that we will play Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl on January 1.

Sunday Reflections: New DC

The news of the day is that Malzahn dismissed Ellis Johnson as defensive coordinator.  Who is next?  It's too early to know, but I thought why not have fun and give my odds.  I'm not in the loop and anything I say shouldn't be believed, but that hasn't stopped me before.

First, let's remember that Johnson is 62.  Much was made during his stint at Auburn about his age, his having coached at four SEC programs, and his decades in the business.  So, I'm setting the over and under on the age of our next DC at 53.  I don't have a bet on which side we will land.  However, when Johnson was at South Carolina, he famously criticized our brand of offense.  Also, ESPN is reporting "mutual interest" between Malzahn and Muschamp.  Does that indicate a younger DC?

As for who will replace Johnson, here are my unbiased, yet uninformed and unreliable, odds:

Rodney Garner - 35:1
Will Muschamp - 6:1
Bo Pelini - 15:1
Ed Orgeron - 20:1
Somebody else - 10:1

The team finished 8-4.  This is a program that, especially after last year, wants to win championships.  Knowing that we need to improve after a four loss season, going with Garner might be a risk because he has never been a DC.

Ellis Johnson Fired

The news came late this afternoon.  What is next for our defense?

The 2014 Alabama Game

The Tigers are a 9 1/2 point underdog in Tuscaloosa this year.  Few people think we have a chance.  We'll see what happens.

FIRST QUARTER

The Tigers win the toss and receive, get a break as the KO goes out of bounds at the Auburn 44, but on the first play a flare pass is a lateral to Roc Thomas and he can't handle the ball and Alabama recovers at the Auburn 35.  Five plays later Alabama is in the end zone.

Auburn 0 Alabama 7

The Tigers move smartly down the field from their 25 but have to settle for a FG from the 3.  On the drive we moved the ball on the ground and come up a little short inside the 5.  That was a good drive minus not being able to punch it into the end zone.

Auburn 3 Alabama 7

Alabama mounts another quick TD drive abetted by 30 yards in penalties.  The score comes on a 17 pass to Cooper.

Auburn 3 Alabama 14

The Tigers drive to a 4th and 1 at the Alabama 8.  The big play is a long completion to Duke Williams to the Alabama 17.
Nick Williams sneaks for the first down barely.
After three straight incompletions we have to again settle for the field goal.
Uzomah and Coates both had tough but catchable passes but both couldn't bring in the ball.
We can't have incompletions like that and win this game.

Auburn 6 Alabama 14

Finally a three and out from their 25.
The quarter ends with Auburn at their 45 with 2nd and 10.

THIRD QUARTER

We get to the 5 with a third and two but CAP is dropped in the backfield on a play that was too slow in developing.  Our running success comes from quick hitting the line rather than slow developing plays.  Another FG is good.

Auburn 9 Alabama 14

First Alabama play from scrimmage Whitehead intercepts at the Alabama 32.
After a 2 yard loss Marshall hits Coates for the touchdown.  The turnovers are now even.

Auburn 16 Alabama 14

Our defense holds again sacking their QB on their last play.  The bad news is that their punt pends us at our 10 but still our defense is playing well at the moment.
Our offense has had the ball 5 times.  After the initial turnover we've scored 4 straight times.
We move out to midfield from our 10 but have to punt from there.
Our punt coverage allows their returner to return to their 42 with about 5 minutes left.
Alabama passes their way down to the Auburn 9 and a timeout with 3:02 left in the half.
On 4th and goal from the one Yeldon powers in for the score.

Auburn 16 Alabama 21

Wow!  Marshall hits Coates on a 68 TD pass with 54 seconds and Auburn regains the lead.

Auburn 23 Alabama 21

The Tigers get ANOTHER pick and on a razzle dazzle play and another pass to Coates we are at the one yard line.  The play from scrimmage is stopped and we have to settle for the field.  We go to the half leading Alabama.  The Tigers so far are playing inspired football.

Auburn 26 Alabama 21

Alabama receives to start the half and the Tigers get another interception at the UA 39.
The touchdown comes on a 6 yard pass to Bray.  The second half has started like the first half ended.
11:02 to go in the third..

Auburn 33  Alabama 21

UA moves from their 25 to the Auburn 39 and then there's a 39 yard TD pass to Cooper but the PAT is blocked.  That's the first big pass of the game to Amari Cooper.

Auburn 33 Alabama 27

The Tigers respond.
There is a pass to Bray down to the UA 21.  Both Bray and the defender go out of bounds with the ball but a tie goes to the receiver.  The play is reviewed and I thought sure as the world the refs would give the ball the red shirt.
We have to settle for the field goal once again.

Auburn 36 Alabama 27

About three and a half minutes left in the third quarter.
First play from scrimmage Sims hits Cooper again for 75 yards.
My, my, my.
We've disguised our defenses well but that's two plays where Cooper gets wide open this time running past Mincy.  Sims either has to pass short or hit Cooper long.

Auburn 36 Alabama 34

What a game so far.
After one first down Marshall throws the interception and UA is at the Auburn 31.
The third quarter clock is winding down.
The quarter ends with Alabama having first and goal at the Auburn 13.
This game will go to the finish.

FOURTH QUARTER

15 minutes left.  How will this thing go?
Sims runs around left end 11 yards for the score.
The 2 point conversion is good.

Auburn 36 Alabama 42

Can our offense respond?
14:33 to go.
From the 26 we go back to the 22 and have to punt.  Not good.
Alabama will start at their 28 after a good punt by Carlson.
Now we need a defensive stop.
They march down the field dominating our defense.  It looks their offense is dominating our defense and we can't stop them.
The touchdown pass comes from the 6 as Whitehead could have had an interception but didn't get his head around.  How sad.
The 2 point try fails.

Auburn 36 Alabama 48

Could have stopped that one if Whitehead had turned his head around.
8:05 to go.
There's another long completion from the 31 to the UA 16.
On 4th down the completion to the 8 is short of the first down and Alabama takes over.
When all is said and done we've had to kick 5 field goals and that's the difference in the ballgame.
We have 565 yards but we've had to kick field after field goal.
They take if 92 yards with big runs by their big back Henry.

Auburn 36 Alabama 55

With 20 seconds remaining Auburn gets a consolation touchdown on a 5 yard run by Corey Grant.

FINAL SCORE

Auburn 44 Alabama 55

The ultimate difference in the game is that we have to settle for 5 field goals. Our inability to score touchdowns and having to settle for field goals is the difference in the game. Despite the 55 points our defense played well in the first half and not so good in the second half but it's the offense that should done better to win this game.  Our defense didn't have 4 quarters in it.  End of story.

After Samford

We are down to the last regular season game of 2014.  The 8 and 4 Tigers are a 9 point underdog in Tuscaloosa.  The only good thing about it is that no one will expect us to win so if we do pull it off it will be big.    In 2002 the Tigers surprised the Tide in similar circumstances.  I don't expect the same this year.  Then again we were 10 point underdogs at home last year and we know what happened then.

The 2014 Samford Game

For the first time Gus Malzahn has lost two straight games.  Both the Tigers and the Bulldogs come into this game 7 and 3.  The Tigers need to right the ship.

FIRST QUARTER

Once again the Tigers start slow.  A holding penalty results in a three and out as Auburn receives to start the game.
The Bulldogs cross midfield but punt whereupon Marshall throws an interception down at the Bulldog 35 toward Coates into double coverage, and there's a runback inside the Auburn 35.
The Tigers hold on a 4th and 1 at the 13.
The Tigers look sluggish.
The Tigers drive to the Samford 35 but Marshall is sacked on the last play of the quarter and Auburn is punting.  Without Duke Williams and Ricardo Louis we have no passing game and the running is haphazard.  This not starting well.

Auburn 0  Samford 0

SECOND QUARTER

A light rain is falling.
The punt is only 22 yards.  Among other problems our special teams play is terrible.
This team looks totally uninspired.
Samford starts at their 23 with rain and wind.
The Bulldogs punt, Bray fumbles another one, but Melvin Ray picks it up and we start at the 27
The offense sputters again and we are three and out.
There's a pretty good punt and Samford starts on their 26.
Our offense has nothing going.
Going back to the Georgia game we are into our 5th straight quartet without scoring.
This team is sleep-walking.
I never thought I would see a Gus Malzahn team regress like this.
This team makes costly mistakes and commits costly penalties.  The trend since TAMU continues.
What is the matter with this team?
Samford looks like the better team so far.
We are averaging 1.8 yards per play so far.
Samford drives to the AU 31 after the second interference call on Mincy.  It looks like a bad call but no matter.  We shouldn't be getting outplayed by the Samford Bulldogs.
Samford goes to the AU 15 after an easy pitch and catch.
Samford goes to the 8.
Then there is the TD pass from the 8.
We let them move down the field mainly on penalties and Samford leads and this game is very serious.
Auburn had better get it together right now.  Auburn needs to wake up.  This team is playing without energy.  This game could get very scary.

Auburn 0  Samford 7

First play there is a long pass to Coates to the Samford 24.
Quan Bray sweeps left from the 23 for the score.
Auburn responds in three plays for 73 yards.
That's more like it.

Auburn 7  Samford 7

The defense finally rises up and pushes the Bulldogs back from their 27.
Bray returns the punt to the Bulldog 44.
We move smartly down the field all the way to the 5 but we get pushed back and have to settle for the field goal.  Despite getting pushed back at the end of the drive for the first time we show energy on offense.

Auburn 10  Samford 7

Samford goes three and out and is punting with 1:28 left.
The kick goes out of bounds at the AU 43.  The Tigers have 2 timeouts left.
After a 12 yard rush Marshall hits Bray for 40 yards to the Bulldog 21.
The score comes on a 6 yard slash around left end by CAP with 39 seconds to go.
It's like Samford's touchdown woke this team up.

Auburn 17 Samford 7

The half ends as Auburn hopefully finally woke up.
Let's keep the momentum going.

THIRD QUARTER

The Bulldogs drive to the Auburn 15 making our defense look porous again but we finally stop them and they miss a 34 field goal attempt.  I was thinking we're starting slow in this half just like we started the game.  We are getting a good pass rush with 4.
The Tigers drive 80 yards in 10 plays the TD coming on a 13-yard pass to Corey Grant around the left on a wheel route.

Auburn 24 Samford 7

Samford is quickly three and out.
AU is also three and out.
Kris Frost intercepts and Auburn is at the Samford 25.
CAP runs for 10.
There is a completion to the end zone but Coates is called for offensive pass interference.
NM is sacked for a big loss and we are out of FG range.
This is a disappointing possession as we are pushed back from the SU 25.
The quarter ends as Samford gets ready to punt from their 30.

FOURTH QUARTER

The Tigers drive 65 yards for the touchdown.
Roc Thomas powers in from the one for the score.
That was power running.

Auburn 31 Samford 7

The Bulldogs drive into Auburn territory before Mincy intercepts at the AU 25.
The game ends without any additional scoring.
Jeremy Johnson gets in on a series.  I can't wait to see him next year.
After a sluggish start but the Tigers finally get it going after Samford scores first.
Now comes the big one next week.

After Georgia

The season has gone sour.  Something happened to this team after Ole Miss.  I do not know what it is.  We lose to TAMU which lost to Missouri at home on Saturday.  We get blown out by Georgia.  What gives?

The 2014 Georgia Game

Once more the South's oldest rivalry kicks off between the hedges at 6:15 on ESPN.  I think the Bulldogs are a slight favorite.  As always it's a big game for both teams. Both squads have lost 2 games. Their big running back Todd Gurley returns tonight after a suspension.  Auburn needs to beat both Georgia and Alabama to turn Amen Corner.

FIRST QUARTER

The Tigers receive and  march right down the field 70 yards for the touchdown mixing the pass and run.
CAP runs 26 yards for the score.
The offense looks sharp to start this game.

Auburn 7  Georgia 0

Todd Gurley runs the kickoff back for the TD untouched but a holding penalty negates the score.
First and 10 Georgia at the Bulldog 22.
The Dogs move efficiently to the Auburn 44, fake a punt from there, and pick up the first down bur it's called back by a lineman downfield.  The Tigers are lucky on two big penalties on Georgia so far.
After the actual punt AU has the ball back on the 14.
The Tigers move out to their 40 but elect to punt on 4th and 1.
After a poor 27 yard punt Georgia has the ball back on their 35.
We need better punts than that.
Our defense stops Gurley twice for a loss and Ga. is three and out.  Good defensive stand right there.
Quan Bray muffs the punt and Georgia recovers.
A special teams miscue puts the defense on the spot at the Auburn 19.
We can't win making mistakes like this.  How unfortunate for our defense.  No excuse for this.
The TD pass comes from a 3rd and goal from the 7.
Auburn turns it over and Georgia takes advantage.
Another big mistake like last week.

Auburn 7  Georgia 7

The Tigers drive out to their 48 as the first quarter ends.
Our offense has shown so far that it can move the ball on Georgia.

SECOND QUARTER

After a holding penalty the Tigers have to punt.
Georgia starts at their 17 after a 44 yard punt.
The Bulldogs pick our defense apart down to the AU 38.
There is a run to the AU 19.
Our defense is yielding.
On 4th and 1 from the Auburn 9 their running back runs up the middle to the end zone.
That was too easy.  We had nobody there as the RB hit the line.
11 plays 83 yards.  Our defense is looking like last week.

Auburn 7  Georgia 14

Louis is dropped at the 18 on the kickoff.
After one first down Auburn is punting again.  Our offense has not been in a rhythm since the opening drive.
The punt goes inside the 10 but touched an Auburn player at the 19.
With 4:47 to go we cannot afford to give up another score in this half.
The Tigers force a punt from their 38 but we get called for roughing the kicker.  Our guy was close to touching the ball but the call goes against us.  Stan White can't understand how our rusher didn't touch the ball.  We force a punt and let them keep the ball.
Away Georgia goes now.
First down Georgia at the Auburn 13.
A turnover on special teams and a costly penalty on special teams has doomed us in this first half.
Two critical mistakes is killing us plus Georgia is playing better than us.
The Dogs settle for a 32 yard FG with 29 seconds left set up by a miscue on a Georgia punt.

Auburn 7  Georgia 17

The quarter ends with Auburn getting a throw to the 1 to Louis.
After a promising start the Tigers falter due mainly to two critical special teams mistakes.
Georgia gets the ball to start the second half.

THIRD QUARTER

After an exchange of possessions the Bulldogs drive 57 yards with ease with power running.  Our defense is physically overwhelmed.  It's like we only have 7 players on defense with big guys against small guys.  Midway thru the third quarter it's all Georgia.

Auburn 7  Georgia 24

The Tigers cross midfield but come up empty on 4th and 7.
This game is over.  It could get very ugly before it's over.
Georgia drives for a field goal with less than a minute to go in the quarter after Malzahn has to challenge a touchdown call where their player clearly stepped out of bounds.

Auburn 7  Georgia 27

55 seconds to go in the quarter.  Surely if we don't score on this possession the game is truly over.
We have scored only 7 points in almost 3 full quarters.
The Tigers start at the 25.
The Tigers are at their 45 or so as the quarter ends.
It's down to cases as the Tigers must score on this possession.

FOURTH QUARTER

The Tigers finally get a drive going down to the Bulldog 12.
On 4th down Marshall throws into triple coverage and an interception at the 2.
That should do it.
The Bulldogs muscle the ball down the field again gashing our defense running the ball.
This is total domination by Georgia.
Since our first TD drive it's been all Georgia.
What else can you say?  That was a 98 yard drive to finish off the Tigers.

Auburn 7  Georgia 34

Jeremy Johnson comes in and the Tigers cross midfield with JJ looking good but Quan Bray fumbles again and Georgia recovers at their 37.  Oh, well.  Georgia can run the clock out.
Forget about this one.
This is not the shootout we thought might happen.
This is not the season we had hoped for after beating LSU and Ole Miss.
Such is college football.

I Like Rob Pate's Georgia Game Analysis

Rob Pate: Good time to play Georgia

What an opportune time for the Georgia Bulldogs to appear on the schedule. One week after this Auburn team failed to maintain control of its own destiny toward a playoff berth by losing to a reeling Texas A&M squad starting a true freshman quarterback, the opportunity to turn the page and compete against a longtime rival is timely. In fact little else can aid the transition away from disappointment and letdown toward opportunity and restoration like preparation and defeating a bitter rival.
Rob Pate (Photo: 247Sports)
The A&M result was a resounding gut-punch to Auburn people with expectations set by Vegas as multiple touchdown favorites as well as A&M failing the eye test with its recent play. Few things frustrate me worse than young quarterbacks lighting up our defense or a defensive scheme lacking in presnap disguise and concealment, the greatest advantage a defense has.
Columns written here and other places in the aftermath of the A&M game have called for calm, called for reason, called for a tempering of the ire within. Seemingly two camps are out there divided by generations. Older generations of Auburn people call for proper perspective, allegiance through thick and thin, reverential realism reside in one camp. Younger generations of Auburn people call for impassioned play, expecting personnel advancement and development, soured by failing to achieve the lofty expectations a title run requires sit in their camp. Most of us likely meander someplace between the two, with roots firmly entrenched in the days of yesteryear yet bellies full of the fruit produced from the days of Pat Dye to the current, therefore expectantly ever ready to feed.
Players know nothing of this type of mindset. Most of these guys couldn't identify Pat Dye if he walked into the locker room, not out of irreverence but out of youth. Most know little about longstanding Auburn football tradition. Most come to Auburn because they feel a since of belonging, they fit the scheme played, they trust the coaching staff in place. Most don't enter steeped with experiences and memories of Auburn years past. Even so, all leave Auburn better men, deeply entrenched in its aura, profoundly impacted by its people, eternally grateful for the opportunity to represent the logo, and certainly acutely cognizant of the importance of beating its rivals. Nothing rallies Auburn University like defeating a time-honored rival and none is more traditional than Auburn-Georgia.
In 1997, my freshman year at Auburn, we were bludgeoned by an inferior Mississippi State team 20-0 inside of Jordan-Hare Stadium, relinquishing control of our title destiny. Our next game was on the road in Athens to take on a Robert Edwards, Hines Ward, Champ Bailey, Mike Bobo-led team ranked No. 7 in the country. As a freshman, my thoughts were not good ones. Georgia was obviously a much more talented team than the Mississippi State squad that had throttled us. How could we beat UGA in Sanford Stadium, a Georgia team that had beaten State 47-0?
What I found out was the meaning of this game to the many teammates hailing from the Peach State as well as the older teammates that had fought in the battles prior to my arrival. This game took on a significance I had not seen. The feeling was palpable; the preparation intense, the importance magnified by the tears welling up within the eyes of teammates wanting to win so badly the emotion was overcoming. I only thought I knew what Auburn-Georgia meant. Not until Takeo Spikes pierces a hole through your heart with laser-focused eyes filled with tears and rage and hate and respect and hunger all personified in one Georgia Tiger does the significance of this game take on its true form.
That is why Georgia comes at just the right time for not only these Tigers but all Tigers. There are infinitely more Auburn players with Georgia roots than Georgia players with Auburn pedigrees. This game means more to Auburn players. Yes, it's big for Georgia, its players and fan base, but in the locker room it's the Auburn players that want this game more, viewing it as a game taking on greater significance. For the rest of us that will not attempt to tackle the formidable duo of Todd Gurley or Nick Chubb or to tame the crowd in Athens by running the zone read to perfection as Nick Marshall will attempt, this game brings those two camps of generational disparate Auburn fans together like little else can after an inexplicable loss.
Our current roster is filled with young men, I'm sure, of this exact mindset. Just check the roster: Montravius Adams (Dooly Co.), Jonathan Jones (Carrollton), Quan Bray (LaGrange), Jonathon Mincy (Decatur), Nick Marshall (Wilcox Co.), Ben Bradley (Norcross), C.J. Uzomah (Suwanee), Jeff Whitaker (Warner Robbins), Gabe Wright (Columbus). All are significant contributors on this football team. Each enters this game on fire to prove a point in many aspects.
They will play for family members living in the state of Georgia who live every day hearing about the Bulldogs. They play for validation in their decision to leave the state to become Auburn men. They play with pride in the blue jersey, the Auburn logo adorning their helmet thinking of the many times they've seen the Georgia logo as a kid knowing how much this game means to the people of their hometowns. They play to silence the many high school friends that still goad and ridicule them about not being a "Dawg!"
These are the games these guys will remember when they're old men. Going into College Station, Baton Rouge, beating the Mississippi schools, those thrills fade. Playing your home state university and walking off the field a winner,-that you never, ever forget. It's a treasure.
And for the rest of, the guys not hailing from Georgia, we also recognize and appreciate the opportunity to play in this classic. The significance, the pageantry, the tradition of this rivalry is not lost on any player as he walks through the tunnel and begins his jaunt onto the playing surface of either Sanford or Jordan-Hare Stadiums. The crowds are electric. The passion on the faces of those you encounter at Tiger Walk, those hanging over the rails in the stadium, the fury of shakers and roar of the crowd, those things don't go unnoticed by the player. It fuels him. It prepares him for what's at stake. It sends shivers down his spine, truly.
The matchup is one I like. It will be a strength versus strength test of which Auburn has answered well this season. Teams that make their living running the football have found it a tough go against an Auburn front stingy against the run. Auburn has not faced the talent at tailback that Georgia will unleash, but I still prefer matching our rushing defense against a run heavy offense over our struggling pass defense against a team that slings it all over the field. Defense boils down to an internal drive, a demeanor of unbridled desire to exert your will to get off of the football field. Playing Georgia will light the fire for a group whose fire has dwindled lately.
When I look at a game to prognosticate an outcome I compare quarterbacks, running game, defensive dominance, and coaching. I would take Nick Marshall over any quarterback in college football. Our running game is tops in the conference and shows no signs of slowing, however Georgia's is a very close second and dynamic as well. Defenses are similar with UGA better in total and scoring defense whereas Auburn leads in the critical red zone. Neither play stellar, lockdown defense. I don't know enough about the Georgia coaching staff to compare the two but the Auburn staff is rarely outmatched.
I see this game as a race to forty. The Auburn defense needs to do just enough to allow the Auburn offense to not feel like it has to score every time it possesses the ball. I think it will be back and forth. I think at points both squads will feel out of it. The team that makes the fewest mistakes wins.
Auburn 41, Georgia 38

After Texas A&M

Auburn will not be in the 4-team playoff this year.  Auburn will not be in Atlanta.  Our offense is good but not good enough to bail out the defense when we get off to a slow start as with MSU and TAMU.  In fact, our defense is terrible.  There, I've said it.  It does no good to say that we held TAMU to 6 points in the second half when we gave up 35 in the first half. I suspect we will have an 8 and 4 season.

The 2014 Texas A and M Game

The Tigers are a big favorite over the Aggies---something like 21 points.  The visitors are missing their good starting QB who is suspended for this game.  This home game starts at 2:30 on CBS.

FIRST QUARTER

The game begins disastrously for Auburn.
TAMU receives and after one first down the Aggies get a 60-yard TD pass.
Miscommunication in the defensive backfield.  The receiver was wide open cutting across the middle of the field.

Auburn 0  TAMU 7

The Aggies pooch kickoff and we get good field position but CAP fumbles on the first play.  TAMU recovers and get another quick TD pass.  2:07 into this game and we trail already by two touchdowns.

Auburn 0  TAMU 14

I couldn't have imagined a more disastrous start to this game.
This looks like Starkville all over again.
Our pass defense, our Achilles Heel all year, is in full display today against a big passing team.
What will our offense do now?
The offense drives down the field smartly with runs and short passes to a first down at the 2.
CAP scores on the next play up the middle.

Auburn 7  TAMU 14

What will the defense do now?
We need to pressure this QB or get an interception.
We need to mix up our pass coverage Quentin Riggins says.
Their QB is only doing quick passes.
The kickoff for a change is run back across the 30.
Jermaine Whitehead is on the field.
Three and out!  Our first defensive stop of the game.
The punt is a touchback.
Louis sweeps for 25 yards on the first play.
The drive culminates with a 34 run down the right sideline by Cameron Artis-Payne.
7 plays all on the ground.
Just like that we are tied.
This is more like it.

Auburn 14  TAMU 14

TAMU starts on their 5 after a blocking in the back penalty on the kickoff.
The Aggies pass for two first downs taking advantage of their tall receivers.
The quarter ends with TAMU getting a first down pass to midfield.
We must shore up pass defense.  Their freshman QB is picking us apart.

SECOND QUARTER

If this is a scoring contest I am not going to be happy.
The Aggies move to the AU 33.
The score comes on a 23 yard pass to a wide-open receiver in the middle of the field.
What has happened to our pass defense?  It's never good but today it's beyond horrible.

Auburn 14  TAMU 21

If this doesn't stop we are going to lose this game.  At this point I see no hope.
They've had the ball 4 times and scored 3 touchdowns with a freshman quarterback.
That was a 94 yard drive.
Our defense did not come to play this game so far.
First play from the 15 Duke Williams gets hit at his knees on the 20 and has to be carried off the field.
As if the way the game is going is not enough our best receiver is at least done for the day and maybe more.
After one first down Auburn has to punt. Marshall first overthrows an open Coates heading for the goal line, and then Coates drops a first down pass.
TAMU will have the ball at their 32.  This is a dangerous situation early in this game.
We don't need to get down again by two scores.
The team is sputtering today for sure.
The Aggies move the ball again.  Our team is getting whipped.
Auburn is getting gashed.
TAMU is down to the Auburn 7.
It's hard to believe what I am seeing.
Our defense is not there.
Touchdown from the seven easy pickings.
It looks like we have only 7 or 8 guys on the field on defense.
Our defense is not contesting plays.  Our defense is getting embarrassed.  This is awful, awful, awful.
Something is wrong out there.  I do not know what it is but our defense must change something or this will be one of the most embarrassing losses in Auburn history.

Auburn 14  TAMU 28

Still 10:29 to go in the first half.
The offense drives to the TAMU 20.
First down to the 10.
CAP to the three.
NM is sacked at the 15 on third down.
We have to settle for the field goal.  That is disappointing.

Auburn 17  TAMU 28

Our defense has been totally unable to stop their offense.
What happens now???
If our defense continues to be missing in action this game is over.
Our defense is a step slow and a step out of position on every play.  They are playing like zombies.
The kickoff is run back across the 35.
That is not good.
An interception on the first play by Whitehead at the TAMU 42!!!
A blatant facemask is not called on NM.  The defender spun NM around but no call.
Then there is an interference call again the Aggies.
We move to a first down to the Aggie 29.
NM is sacked and we face a third and 15.
On the last play of the half Carlson's field goal attempt is blocked and run back for a touchdown.
The blocker came quickly around the right end looking like he was unblocked.
What a nightmare this game is.  I can't believe what I am seeing.
We get the ball coming out for the second half but I can't see how we are going to win this game.
I am speechless.  This will be one of the worst Auburn losses ever.

Auburn 17  TAMU 35

THIRD QUARTER

The Tigers get the football to start the half desperately needing to score.  Alas, we are pushed back to our 5 before punting from about the 30.
TAMU drives from their 30 but they miss a 48 yard FG attempt.
We have the ball back for our second possession.
We need to score people.
The Tigers move to a first down at the TAMU 36 behind the running of CAP.
It's been a fast quarter with 5:29 left.
Duke Williams continues to be out of the game.
CAP runs to the 4 for 32 yards!
Roc to the one and on the next play NM runs around right end for the score.
Maybe we have a game.

Auburn 24  TAMU 35

4:41 to go in the third.
Can our defense rise to the occasion?
We jump on third and 7 and on third and 2 they pick up the first down.
We simply cannot give up a touchdown here.
A shovel pass where we miss tackles leads to a first down inside the Auburn 10.
The quarter is winding down.
We move to 3rd and goal from the 4.
Pass incomplete.  Fourth down.
The short FG attempt is good.

Auburn 24  TAMU 38

We had a three and out but an offsides gave them a 3rd and 2 and they moved on from there.
Every possession is key.  We cannot afford to punt again.
In the closing seconds of the quarter Auburn drives quickly to the Aggie 32 where we will start the final stanza.

FOURTH QUARTER

First play of the quarter MN hits Bray for the touchdown!
We have a ballgame.

Auburn 31  TAMU 38

Their KO guy brings the ball out from deep in end zone and we drop him at the 15.
A chop block moves them back.
On second and 6 we are offside.  So foolish.
First down to the 32 with 13:41 to go.
We continue to hurt ourselves with foolish penalties.
The Aggies move the ball.  It seems that we cannot stop them.  Their offense looks faster than our defense.
At this point after pulling to within a touchdown it looks our defense needs a miracle to stop these guys. I do not see how we are going to win this football game when our defense cannot step up.
TAMU first down to their 48.  Our defense continues to get gashed.
First down to the AU 38.
First down to the AU 14.
The Aggies get the short field goal with 7:54 to go.  Again it's a 2 score lead.

Auburn 31  TAMU 41

We have to score twice now.  Highly unlikely.
Our defense just didn't show up for this game.  I expected to give up some points but not at least 41.
We start at our 25.  We need to score and not be dilatory about it.
From the 40 there is a huge pass to Coates to the 6 under double coverage!  What a catch!
Did we need that or what?
NM runs around left end for the score!
4 plays 75 yards.
We have a football game.

Auburn 38  TAMU 41

6:42 to go.
Can our defense make a stop???
We get the stop as the Aggies punt from just inside their 20 after a three and out.
So far we have given up only 6 points in the second half.
They get a 60 yard punt and we set up shop at our 19.
Now the game is on the line for our offense.
5:40 to go.
The Tigers are quickly out to the 45.
There's a pass to Louis to the Aggie 21 as he stretches out and hauls it in.
First down to the 7 pass to Louis.
Auburn is at the 2.
The Tigers fumble at the 2 between NM and CAP and A and M recovers.  How unexpected is that?!
The play is reviewed and it looks like our player was on the ball but the call was Aggie recovery.
The play is reviewed and the call stands.  It looks like CAP recovered but there wasn't enough video evidence to overturn the call on the field.
TAMU takes over with less than 3 minutes to and two timeouts.
2:26 to go and TAMU faces third and 8 from their 5.
On third down we almost get a safety but the call is that the runner barely go out of the end zone.
They punt and Auburn has a minute and a half to tie or win this game.
Unbelievably on our third play Dismukes snaps the ball when NM wasn't expected it and that's the game.as TAMU recovers.
That's two brutal turnovers at the end of this game.
We shoot ourselves in the foot twice on ball handling mistakes at the end to lose this game.
We get the ball to the two and fumble.
We get the ball back and Dismukes inadvertantly snaps the ball and they recover.
We had two chances at the end but we give the game the game away.  That's all there is to it.
This is as brutal a loss as I can remember.

Auburn 38  TAMU 41

Before Texas A and M

The 7 and 1 Tigers are expected to beat the Aggies.  Let's hope this happens tomorrow afternoon starting at 2:30 on CBS.  Then comes Georgia.  After Samford comes UAT.  Amen Corner is here.  The basketball team opens tonight with an exhibition game vs. West Alabama.  The Bruce Pearl Era begins.

After Ole Miss

Down the stretch we go.  Texas A and M, Georgia, Samford, and Alabama.  State has to lose 2 games for us to go to Atlanta.  Our offense is coming alive.  Our defense does some good things, but also does a lot of bad things.  We had 145 yards in penalties Saturday night.  That surely has to stop.  A and M looks beatable.  We will be a double digit favorite at home.  Georgia unexpectedly lost to Florida.  They are beatable.  Alabama is beatable.  We could run the table or lose a couple.  Just like last year.

Scarbinsky's Take on the Game

The thrill of Auburn's victory meets the agony of Ole Miss' defeat in a frightful, fateful moment

OXFORD, Miss. - How thin is the line between the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat? See Auburn 35, Ole Miss 31. One thrilling and agonizing image will stay with you for years.
It was hard to watch and impossible to look away.
How narrow is the margin between winning and losing an epic college football game, between staying in playoff position one day into November and slipping out, maybe for good?
Kris Frost and Laquon Treadwell arrived at that intersection near the goal line Saturday night in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium with 90 seconds left on the scoreboard clock.
The pass play that all but ended the game started at the Auburn 20 with the visitors leading and Ole Miss driving and one final lead change in the air.
Treadwell, the tough and talented Ole Miss wide receiver who caught the ball, was fighting to drag an Auburn tackler the final 5 yards across the line. He was driving and striving to score the touchdown that would put the No. 4 Rebels a minute and a half away from an inspired come-from-behind win over the No. 3 Tigers.
That last-chance tackler was Frost, the tough and talented Auburn linebacker, who was fighting just as hard to drag down Treadwell from behind before he crossed the line. Frost vice-gripped his hands on Treadwell's hips and wouldn't let go.
It was a clinic on effort by both men, and the ride ended with a frightful and fateful take-down.
Frightful because it led to Treadwell getting carted off the field with what looked like a serious leg injury. Fateful because, as his knees buckled under the force of Frost's pull, his body crossed the plane and the ball followed - but not in his possession.
It was ruled a touchdown by the officials on the field, but replay revealed it was clearly a fumble. Auburn linebacker Cassanova McKinzy pounced on the ball in the end zone an instant before Ole Miss tight end Evan Engram could get to it.
As the replay official studied the visual evidence up in the booth, medical personnel attended to the wounded Treadwell down on the field. It was a powerful mixture of conflicting emotions for both teams and both sets of fans.
The medical personnel took Treadwell from the field in a cart, something no one who cares about this sport ever wants to see. The referee on the field conveyed more bad news to the third-largest crowd in Vaught-Hemingway history.
The ball had indeed come loose before Treadwell could control it across the goal line. It was a fumble, and Auburn had recovered it. The last 90 seconds had to be played, but they would fade into insignificance.
"It's a really, really sickening way to lose," Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said.
It's hard to imagine one program, which had gained so much respect all season long for its skill and its will, losing more on one play.
Both players and both teams deserve our respect, and Treadwell deserves all the prayers and best wishes we can send. There will be time to sort through what the final score really means, but we can say one thing for sure.
At that goal line, at that moment, that was college football at its thrilling and agonizing best.

The 2014 Ole Miss Game

(From Tunica) We were at the game last night in the cold at Vaught-Hemingway to see our Tigers beat the Rebs 35 to 31.  What an exciting back and forth game it was!

We get to talk in person this morning about the game.  The future has never been brighter for Auburn football.

(Back in Pelham)  This was an exciting game.  The Tigers led 35 to 31.  Ole Miss drove inside the 10 and on a short pass to their main receiver Treadwell Kris Frost knocked the ball out of his hands just before he crossed the goal line and McKinzy recovered in the end zone.  The call was touchdown but the review gave the ball to Auburn.  The Rebels had one last possession but after 4 straight incomplete passes Auburn wins the football game.

The one big negative in this game was penalties.  The Tigers are penalized for an astounding 145 yards including 105 in the first half.  The Tigers roll up over 500 yards of total offense against a vaunted Rebel defense.   Our offense was very balanced.

At this venue we enjoy the BBQ.  We enjoy the comfort of having plenty of room to stand although we split the handicap chairs per half.

It WAS cold.  It sure was, but the win warmed us up.

After South Carolina

For the first time this year Auburn will be an underdog next Saturday night in Oxford.  The Rebels are minus 3.  I kind of like playing as the underdog.  We will be there to see it for ourselves.
Ole Miss lost to LSU so both teams are 6 & 1.  Something will give Saturday night.

The 2014 South Carolina Game

After a week off after the State loss the 5 and 1 Tigers face South Carolina at home on the SEC Network.  Here we go with the last half the regular season.  Auburn is something like a 19 point favorite.  Auburn has yet to lose against Spurrier's Gamecocks.

FIRST QUARTER

The Gamecocks receive and drive 75 yards for the touchdown.  The score comes on a 32 yard pass.  This is not the start we wanted.  USC moves the ball with short passes just like most teams do on our defense.  I do not understand why our defense is good against the run but porous against the pass.

Auburn 0  South Carolina 7

From the 25 the Tigers have to punt from their 46.
The punt goes out of bounds at the Gamecock 26.
The Tigers don't look ready in this game.  There is no intensity so far.
Quentin Riggins says we must get pressure on their QB with our front four.
South Carolina drives at will to the Auburn 10 before Cassanova McKinzy intercepts at the 8.
We sure needed that!  The Tigers did get pressure on that play with Martravious Adams.
The Tigers march 92 yards for the tying score mixing the run and pass.
The score comes on a 3-yd. pass to Brandon Fulse.
THAT looked like the Gus Malzahn offense.  That was great pace.

Auburn 7  South Carolina 7

The first quarter ends with USC facing 4th and 2 from their 33.

SECOND QUARTER

The Gamecocks go for it and on an an Auburn misalignment they are all the way to the Auburn 49.
The Gamecocks score on a 16 yard pass.
If it were not for the turnover Auburn would be in a world of trouble.
Their offense looks unstoppable by our inert defense.  This game looks like big trouble.
So much for our defense improving from last year.
10 plays 75 yards.

Auburn 7  South Carolina 14

After a block in the back on the runback Auburn starts on their 7.
Just like the last possession the Tigers march smartly 93 yards for the tying score.
CAP barrels over from the 1 for the touchdown.
Roc Thomas and CAP do most of the damage.  Nick Marshall is making smart reads.
At the moment with 8:19 to go in the half we are in a track meet.

Auburn 14  South Carolina 14

Whew!
South Carolina has had the ball three time.  They have scored 2 TDs.  We have stopped them with the interception at our 7 for our only stop.
Our defense is getting scorched with their passing.
After one first down the Gamecocks are punting.
Bray makes a great punt return BUT he fumbles at the Auburn 42 and they recover.
Boy, oh boy.
We hold them on third down but there is facemask call against us.
We are killing ourselves with mistakes.
Next play there is the TD pass on a wheel route of 27 yards.
Our defense should have been off the field twice but we fumble the punt and then give them a first down after holding them on third down with a discipline penalty and there is the touchdown pass.

Auburn 14  South Carolina 21

We gave them a touchdown on their last possession.
Can our offense respond once again?  So far we cannot stop their offense and so our offense has to keep up.
The offense responses again as we drive 75 yards for the score.  Nick Marshall keeps on a 37 yard scamper for the score.  At least our running game is alive and well tonight.

Auburn 21  South Carolina 21

Our defense has to step up.  Must step up for us to win this game.
The half ends with USC letting the clock run out.
Which side will make the best adjustments at the half?
South Carolina has dominated thru the air and Auburn has dominated on the ground.
Whew!

THIRD QUARTER

Corey Grant brings the kickoff out of the end zone and is dropped at the 12, but not to worry.
The Tigers march smartly down the 88 yards in 13 plays for the touchdown.  Our run game is in high gear.
We do not have to throw the ball.
Marshall walks in from the 5 for the score.
Auburn leads for the first time in this football game.

Auburn 28  South Carolina 21

What will our defense do this half?
The Gamecocks score quickly with a long pass from around midfield.  51 yard completion.
Our defense simply has no answer for their passing.  Spurrier is calling the right plays time after time.
First USC possession is our same old first half defense.
5 plays 72 yards.

Auburn 28  South Carolina 28

BOOM!
First play Ricardo Louis sweeps 75 yards around left end for the touchdown.
A one play drive.  11 seconds.  Wow!

Auburn 35  South Carolina 28

We cannot stop their offense.  They convert a 4th and 6 on their 35 and continue their march.
The TD pass comes from the 10.
Their offense is drilling our defense.
They are making our pass defense look silly.  The Gamecocks make one pass play after another.
South Carolina has yet to punt in this game.  They have scored every time except for the one turnover.

Auburn 35  South Carolina 35

South Carolina executes the onside kick.  Our receiving team is not ready.
Auburn challenges the call but to no avail.  The replay shows that USC did not touch the ball before it went 10 yards.
We are in trouble now.  USC is taking to Auburn.
South Carolina can take the lead now starting from their 45.
USC gets a first down when a takedown on an Auburn player is not called.
Our crowd boos lustily.
The quarter ends with the Gamecocks driving.

FOURTH QUARTER

As the final quarter begins I would say that Auburn is in deep trouble.
The team that has the ball last may win this game.
This is NOT the type of game that I like.
Our defense has yet to show up.
The Gamecocks are calling and executing all of the right plays.
We surrender the initiative by giving up the onside kick.
On 2nd and 8 from the 18 Jones intercepts in the end zone!
There is the turnover we needed.
Auburn needed a turnover in the WORST way and we finally get it.
We had pressure finally on that play and that was what did it.
The TIGERS march 80 yards quickly for the touchdown.
Marshall strolls in from the 9 for the go-ahead score.
Nick Marshall is a wonder to watch when he is on his game.  That was a great fake on the scoring run, faking to Thomas and keeping the rock.

Auburn 42  South Carolina 35

This game is far from over early in the 4th quarter.
The visitors move the ball down the field on the way converting a 4th and 7 from their 35.
They are now 5 for 5 on 4th down conversions.
I've never seen anything like this.  Their offense plays with total confidence.
The Tigers are victimized by a terrible interference call in the end zone.  The pass was clearly uncatchable.
USC is on the Auburn 15 first down.
USC moves to 4th and 14 needing the 5 yard line for the first.
The pass in the end zone is incomplete.
Big mistake by Spurrier.  Why not the field goal???
Spurrier gets greedy and pays for it.
We have the ball back on our 19.
We move out to midfield but with 1:18 to go we have to punt.
Oh, my, is this nerve-racking or what?
With 1:08 left USC starts on their 15 after a good punt.
On the next to the last play of the game the Gamecocks gets another gift from the refs with a call of hands in the face or something like that which gives them a chance at the Hail Mary from our 41.  The ball hangs up in the air in the end zone and we get the interception on the last play of the game.
Whew!
We beat South Carolina 42 to 35.  LSU beat Ole Miss 10 to 7.
Next Saturday night in Oxford somebody will be eliminated in the SEC race.

FINAL SCORE

Auburn 42  South Carolina 35

Tim Hudson Ready for World Series Debut at age 39 on Friday Night

Although I am pulling for the Royals to win the World Series, I am proud of Tim Hudson. He makes his first World Series start tonight. He has the most career victories of any active pitcher in MLB and, until this season, had 15 consecutive winning seasons. I hope Hudson wins tonight, then the Royals take the series.

BY Mark Inabinett
24 October 2014

Tim Hudson expects to be calm when he takes the ball on Friday night for the San Francisco Giants in Game 3 of the World Series against the Kansas City Royals. But he was anything but calm when the Giants secured their World Series spot, sending Hudson to the Fall Classic for the first time after 16 Major League seasons.

"I was beside myself," Hudson said of his feelings when San Francisco eliminated the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series. "I had emotions going through my body that I never knew could happen."

The former Auburn star wasn't the only one.

"I've never seen my wife cry so hard in her life," Hudson said of his wife, Kim. "It was awesome. A lot of tears of joy for me and her."

The Giants and the Royals meet with the best-of-seven series tied 1-1. Game 3 starts at 7 p.m. CDT Friday on FOX.

"I feel like things will just fall into place when I get out there,'' Hudson said. "I can't wait. There won't be a person on the field more ready to get the game going than me, I can tell you that."
At 39, Hudson will become the third-oldest pitcher to make his first World Series start. He had played on six teams eliminated in their first round of the baseball playoffs before advancing through the wild-card game, the Division Series and the NLCS with the Giants this season. No player has ever gone more than six postseasons from the start of his career without winning at least one playoff series.

"Obviously, this is something I've never had to deal with at this point in my career," Hudson said at a press conference on Thursday. "It's something that I've always looked forward to. I've always hoped and dreamed that this opportunity would happen for me, and here I am on the eve of, obviously, the biggest game I've ever pitched. ...

"Early on, it wasn't quite as frustrating because I thought that I'd be there every year. I thought I'd have an opportunity every year to get to the playoffs and have a chance to win. But as you start playing with some teams and you have that playoff drought of a few years in a row, you start realizing how hard it is to get here every year and how hard it is to compete against a lot of teams in baseball. So that's when it started becoming a little bit more, a little frustrated. One day, you see this window starting to gradually shrink throughout your career. It was 16 years without getting to the World Series. Was a long time. I played with a lot of guys throughout my career that had not only gotten to the World Series but have won rings, and I'm really happy for those guys, but at the same time I'm really jealous."

Hudson's 2013 season with the Atlanta Braves ended early when he broke his right ankle in July covering first base. He signed a two-year contract with the Giants during the offseason, and he finished as the runner-up to the Miami Marlins' Casey McGehee for The Sporting News National League Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Hudson went to the All-Star Game for the fourth time in his career, but a sore hip bothered him in the second half of the season. The Majors' active leader with 214 career pitching victories, Hudson finished the 2014 season at 9-13 with a 3.57 earned-run average. It broke a streak of 15 consecutive seasons with a winning record, tied with Pedro Martinez and Cy Young for the second-longest in history behind Grover Cleveland Alexander's 19 in a row.

Hudson bounced back from his second-half slump in the postseason. He pitched 14 innings in two extra-inning victories by the Giants, striking out 13 without walking a batter.

As happy as Hudson is to reach the World Series for the first time, his teammates have seemed just as glad to have helped him get there.

"He's a big key to our identity, especially for a guy who just came in this year," two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum said. "It just kind of fell into place. He quickly picked up on who we were as the Giants. He fit in really well here. He's a guy who's going to tell you what's on his mind. He's going to give it to you real, and that's what you need in a clubhouse."

Hudson led Glenwood School in Phenix City to the AISA baseball title in 1993, Chattahoochee Valley to the AJCCC Division II championship in 1994 and Auburn to the College World Series in 1997. At Auburn, he became the first player to be selected All-SEC at two positions in same season as a pitcher and an outfielder. Hudson's 95 RBIs in 1997 still rank second on Auburn's single-season list, and he had a 20-5 pitching mark in two seasons on the Plains.

In addition to his drive to get to the World Series this season, Hudson has been trying to turn teammate Jake Peavy from an Alabama fan into an Auburn supporter. Peavy had planned to attend Auburn after earning the state's Class 4A Player of the Year Award at St. Paul's in 1999. Instead, he turned pro in the San Diego Padres organization.

"I'm Auburn, through and through," Hudson told espn.com. "Jake's an Alabama fan, but he's not the typical fan who bleeds (crimson). I'm trying to convert him. He signed with Auburn, so the door is cracked."

Peavy is about six years younger than Hudson.

"When I was getting ready to go to college, Timmy Hudson was a huge part of me wanting to go to Auburn," Peavy said. "He was a guy I looked up to and wanted to be like. I was even a little jealous when he got to pitch in Atlanta, so close to our home. It's funny to think that after all those years, we have a chance to share this and we're locker mates now. It's been a really cool friendship."

The Stretch Run

After an off-week Saturday begins our stretch run with the treacherous last 6 games starting with South Carolina.  The Gamecocks have been disappointing so far but this is Spurrier's team and Auburn needs to play well and turn up the intensity.  We shall what happens.

Buddy McClinton

Buddy McClinton is the person who gave us  those Florida tickets in 1994.

Auburn great McClinton on College Football HOF ballot

Former Auburn defensive back Buddy McClinton, a three-time All-American, has made the College Football Hall of Fame ballot, which was released by the National Football Foundation on Wednesday.
McClinton was a consensus first-team All-American in 1969. He is Auburn’s all-time leader in interceptions in a season (nine, 1969) and career (18). The 18 picks also set a Southeastern Conference record.
McClinton, who was born in Montgomery, Ala., was the 1968 Sun Bowl Most Valuable Player.
He is a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

After Mississippi State

After losing to State the positive is that this team can still win the rest of them.  The negative is that we could still lose more games.  We're in the same position we were in last year with one loss.  I am a firm believer that each season stands on its own and this same position situation has no real meaning.  After an off week we entertain Spurrier's bunch.  Time will tell what happens after the State loss.  The Bulldogs are ranked #1 for the first time in their history.  Bully for them!

2014 Mississippi State

Does it get any bigger than this vs. MSU?  I think not. Both teams are 5 and 0.   Auburn is ranked#2 and State is ranked #3 in the country.  The winner could vault to #1.  State is good, a very good football team.  Auburn will have to play well today in Starkville to win this game which is a 2:30 kickoff on CBS.

FIRST QUARTER

Before the game starts I can hear the cowbells in the background as our announcers talk.
AU wins the toss and defers so State receives.
State starts at the 25 as the kickoff goes thru the end zone.
The Bulldogs go three and out as our defense starts strong.
Bray fair catches at the Auburn 34 with an additional 5 yards due to a motion penalty.
On the first play the pass is tipped at the line and State intercepts with the ball at the 35.
On 3rd and 11 with strong Auburn pressure there is the 34-yd. touchdown pass.  Good defense.  We blitz and don't quite get to the QB before he is able to release the ball.

Auburn 0  State 7

So State converts the turnover into 7.  On that interception Williams was wide open but the ball was deflected at the line.
There is another turnover on the first play from scrimmage as our receiver catches the ball but fumbles.  It was a bang bang play that is not reviewed.  State is on the Auburn 32.
We are off to a tough start in this football game.
On third and 5 there is a complete pass to the 2.  We leave a wideout uncovered.  Touchdown on the first rush from there.
This team has to collect itself.  We give up 2 quick touchdowns on turnover.
The bleeding has to stop now.

Auburn 0  State 14

Two Auburn possessions.   Two quick turnovers on two plays from scrimmage that turn into scores.  This has to stop.
We are told that Auburn doesn't get rattled.  Now we shall really see if this is true.
After one first down we get a pass to Duke into State territory but the play is negated by a holding penalty.  Everything is going against us.  We end up punting to the State 29.  What else can go wrong?  I still think we are in this game but our defense needs a stop.
State drives down the field for another score.  They are out-executing Auburn.   There is a bad call on Trovon Reed in end zone that puts the ball on the 2 yard line.
Two turnovers and penalities are killing us.  We are still in this game.  I still believe this.  We are still in the middle of the first quarter.

Auburn 0  State 21

Our offense can come back from this and our defense can get it together.  This game is not over.
The good news is that our offense finally moves the ball to a first down at the State 11 BUT Carlson misses the easy field goal attempt.  What else can go wrong?  This is unbelievable.  I cannot believe what I am seeing.  Carlson hooks it bad left.
Finally our defense holds State to a 3 and out.
EXCEPT that amazingly State fakes the punt and Auburn intercepts at the State 36.  Why did Mullen do such a dumb thing.
There is a complete pass to Duke to about the 11, but we move to a 3rd down at the 5.  We keep running CAP up the middle and it doesn't work until maybe the fourth quarter.
We move to 4th down at the four as the quarter ends.
State has dominated.  We needed a TD here but it looks like we will settle for another field goal attempt.

SECOND QUARTER

If we end up winning this football game we will have overcome incredible adversity.
At least Carlson makes the short field goal.  We have to claw our way back Stan White says.

Auburn 3  State 21

On the second play after they start at their 25 from the State 31 Jonathan Jones intercepts!
Our offense is in business again.  It's time to find the end zone.
From the State 46 we move to a first down to the 7.
On third and five we get a TD pass but Coates stepped out of bounds in the end zone and came back in to make the catch.  We have to settle for the FG attempt and it's good.

Auburn 6  State 21

From their 25 State marches right down the field.  We cannot stop them.
From the AU 13 Jonathan Jones gets another pick in the end zone!  Wow!
You talk about a key turnover.  If we win this game we can look back to this State possession.
That's three State turnovers.
After one first down Auburn has to punt.
We have three turnovers but only 6 points to show for it.
State muffs the punt and Auburn recovers at the State 22.  Come on, offense!
Marshall runs to the 11.
On third down from the 9 Marshall throws a bullet into the end zone to Duke.  Finally we take advantage of a State turnover for 7.  We are in this game to the end.

Auburn 13  State 21

5:26 to go in the half.  State starts at their 25.c
State converts on a 3rd and 12 and then Prescott rambles to the Auburn 35.  We have not been good on third downs.  That third down completion was a killer.  Timeout Auburn with State at the Auburn 35.  We need another red zone stop.
There is a screen pass to the 16.
On third down Prescott runs up the middle untouched for the touchdown.
We had them stopped twice on this drive with third and long and we give up  a first down and then a touchdown.  Oh, my.  Our defense plays well and then gives up big yardage on third down.

Auburn 13  State 28

The Tigers go three and out and with 3:09 left State will have another chance with the ball.
The punt goes to the 15 with 2:43 to go and State with all three timeouts left.
We cannot left them score here.
Prescott goes the 26 for a first down.
The rain is coming down in sheets.
The half ends with the rain ripping down and State letting the clock expire.
With everything that went against us in the first half we are still in this game.  We get the ball coming out of the half.  It's not over till it's over.

THIRD QUARTER

We receive and get a big 76 yard completion to Coates but Coates is called for offensive interference in one of the worst calls I have ever seen in my 40 plus years watching college football.  Unbelievable.  The so-called interference occurred at about the 30 but the ref didn't throw the flag until Coates was in side the 10 with the catch.  Coach Malzahn rips the officials; that's all he can do.  Calls like this do make you wonder.
We have to punt and hold the Bulldogs but they get a punt inside our one.  I have never seen a team have as much bad luck as Auburn in this football game so far.
We get out to the 15 on an obvious pass interference call on Coates.  Another first down to the 30.
The Tigers start a drive.
The Tigers march to the State 17.
Roc Thomas gains three.
Marshall hits Duke for the 16 yard touchdown pass.  Great throw.  Great stretch by Duke Williams.
That's a 99 yard drive.  Our offense is back.

Auburn 20  State 28

After one first down with 4:43 to go in the quarter State punts.
Bray fair catches at the AU 20.
The Tigers move to the 47 but have to punt from there.
The punt is fair caught at the State 14.
After one first down Prescott is sacked on 3rd and 10.
Bray fair catches at the AU 36.
The third quarter clock winds down and Auburn faces 4th and 6 to start the final stanza.
How is this game going to end?  I wish we had scored again before the end of the third.

FOURTH QUARTER

State starts on their 22 with 14:54 to go in this game.
The Bulldogs drive to the red zone and on a 4th and 8 get the benefit of ANOTHER bad interference call against from the same official who called the offensive interference on Coates.  Unbelievable.  It's hard to win against a good opponent on the road especially when you get robbed by bad officiating.  The Bullies get the field goal

Auburn 20  State 31

Louis fumbles the kickoff and State recovers.  The play is reviewed.  Unfortunately the call is fumble and the ruling on the field is confirmed.  On this day in this stadium we are not going to get any calls.
State punches it in.  Turnovers and officiating have killed us.

Auburn 20  State 38

Both teams have turned the ball over, and State has taken advantage: 21 points off of turnovers.
The Tigers drive to a 42-yd. field goal.  It's back to 2 score game with less than 9 minutes to go.

Auburn 23  State 38

Do we onside kick?  No, we kick deep.
We get the ball back at our 30 with 4:56 to go.
We need to score in a hurry.
We get to the State 34 with a big run by CAP.
The Tigers drive to a first down to the Bulldog 11 but on the next play a tipped pass is intercepted.
We gave it a shot on that last possession but in the long view of this game the Tigers could not overcome the adversity of turnovers, bad calls, and last of success in the red zone.  We lost 66 yards on that bogus call against Coates and the other kept State alive on a 4th and 8 that led to a touchdown.
It wasn't meant to be.  It just wasn't meant to be today in Starkville, Mississippi.

FINAL SCORE

Mississippi State

The epicenter of the college football world is in StarkVegas this Saturday.  StarkVegas?  Yes, believe it or not!  What should we be thinking about this game?  Here are my thoughts...

Mississippi State has a mediocre pass defense.  I am glad that we had passing success against LSU.  I expect that we will need to move through the air to score points this weekend.  However, can we stop MSU from scoring?  They put 48 points last Saturday on TAMU, albeit an average TAMU defense at best.  The game could be a high scoring affair if our offense can start fast.

Gus said this week he hopes for a fast start against MSU.  That is always what you want, but it may be particularly needed for this Auburn offense to be successful.  We started slowly against KState and scored only 20.  Auburn relies on tempo and rhythm, and starting fast is important to establishing that.

This is a big game for MSU.  If they win, then they could be setup for the biggest season in Bulldog history.  If they lose, then all of the excitement thus far will be for nothing.  The pressure is on MSU more so than Auburn, to me.  I said last week that I hope MSU beats TAMU because the Bulldogs are not used to the hype and spotlight of a #3 ranking.  I hope that the added pressure of their highest ranking ever and Gameday on campus becomes too much.

Although the game is big for MSU, is the game big for Auburn?  We are used to big games.  We have been there.  All games, especially SEC games, are big, but I think this game is big for MSU in a way that it is not for Auburn.  How can MSU really be taken seriously by Auburn fans?  It is still MSU.  For MSU, Auburn is a behemoth, in the same way that we see Georgia or Alabama.  For Auburn, however, MSU is more on par with Kentucky than a Georgia or Alabama.

What scares me most is MSU scoring points and the dual threat of Dak Prescott.  Can we stop them?

To this point, Malzahn seems capable of designing an offense that can beat anybody.  We have not seen him truly bumfuzzled yet.  That gives us confidence.  However, I said before KState that nobody can stop us, and we scored only 20.  Hopefully, these words will not bite me.

Rumor is, Auburn fans will be bringing their own cowbells to StarkVegas.  Is this a smart idea?  I don't know.

Is it amazing that in 2008, these teams played a 3-2 game, and now the teams are ranked #3 and #2?

More thoughts to come...

I Say

I do not know if we will beat Mississippi State or not, but IF we do, I say we will run the table.  This is the biggest game of the year so far and then we have a week off to get ready for the second half of the season.  The rest of the teams on our schedule are beatable.  The schedule sets up nicely if we win on Saturday.

What I Can't Figure Out

All I read and hear is how great MSU is, and maybe they really are a great football team and maybe we'll get run over in Starkville.  So why is Auburn a 2 or 3 point favorite?

My Top Four

1. Auburn
2. FSU
3. Notre Dame
4. Baylor

My Top 4

Since everybody is naming their four playoff teams, I am joining the fray.  This is my prediction of the top four at the end of the year, not who I think the playoff teams would be if the season ended today (in no special order).

1. Auburn
2. Florida State
3. Michigan State
4. Oklahoma

2 vs. 3

The drama is building.  Number 2 Auburn vs. Number 3 Mississippi State. The biggest game in Bulldog college football history.   This may be MSU's date with destiny year.  They are unlikely to ever have another year potentially like this one.  We hope that Auburn will continue under Coach Malzahn to be at the top of college football year after year.  This game should be something to watch.

Auburn Favored?

I see that Auburn is something like a 3-point favorite vs. MSU.  We've heard so much about how good the Bulldogs are.  How can this be?  I mean to read about this team with their QB and their defense you'd think THEY would be favored by two touchdowns.

The Tigers are ranked second in all of the polls. FSU is still #1, but our team is getting some number one votes.  State is tied with Ole Miss in one poll for third.

StarkVegas will be the place to be next Saturday!

LSU 2014

On this morning after we reflect in the aftermath of Auburn's rout of LSU in Jordan-Hare 41 to 7.  I was worried about this game because, after all, it was LSU and they had beaten us 6 of the last 7.  In retrospect there was no need to worry.

We were there to see our Tigers start fast with a 17 to 0 first quarter lead and a 24 to 7 lead at halftime.  We cruise in the second half.  The defense looked great.  The offense was balanced.  The defense held LSU 0 for 13 on third down.  Most important things: the defense flexed its muscle.  Our run defense is getting stout, and our pass defense is improving.  McKinzy and Frost didn't start, but no matter.  Nick Marshall had a great day passing.  Sammie Coates came to life.  It feels so great to thump LSU!

This sets up an amazing game next week.  The country will looking at the Tigers going to StarkVegas.  The Bullies ripped TAMU.  We hit the daily double as Ole Miss beat the Updikes.  What a weekend of college football!

Oregon lost.  Oklahoma lost.  Alabama lost.  For what it's worth, Auburn will surely be ranked #2 in the polls.  Next week's game against State could be the most decisive game of the year.

We get there early, visit with Ben in his apartment, then wander over to the Student Union for lunch and to watch the UAT/Ole Miss game.  We leave for the stadium at the half of that game with Alabama leading 14 to 3.  I never dreamed that the Rebels would roar back to win 23 to 17. I kept watching the score on inside the stadium and the AU crowd roared when the end of the game was shown on the screen. We hit the daily double!

We buy two tickets quickly for $75 a piece.  I am stunned to see that face value if $95.  It's a full house of course.  We are at the mezzanine in plenty of time to see the pregame festivities.  Bo Jackson is honored.

We enjoy the mezzanine as usual.  There is a man there dressed with shoulder pads and a helmet to provide side entertainment.

We say goodbye to Ben in his parking lot and head for home.  We are hungry by the time we drive thru Arby's in Sylacauga.  We return home with a big win over LSU!!!
