Arkansas Preface

It's time to go to Fayetteville and beat Arkansas.  Yes, Auburn has had its troubles against these guys, but I like to think that the best team usually wins.  There are actually few upsets in college football.  Auburn is maybe a 9-point or so favorite.  Other teams have run up big point totals on the Hogs.  I don't believe in jinxes or things of that sort (as Chizik might say).  Arkansas has had a week off and their coach is running his mouth.  The week off thing is overrated and most of the time when a coach runs his mouth before a game he is preparing to lose (witness the Tennessee coach before their Alabama game).  Play our game and don't turn the ball over and may the best team win.

Undercover Barner: Hogs and Kisses

Is there any team that creates more trepidation than Arkansas?  We have struggled against the Hogs back to the Tubs era, losing to inferior Hogs teams.  This "Hog Hex" has bitten us before.  Will it strike again Saturday?

College and Magnolia

The year was 2006. The month, October. The town, Tuscaloosa.

I was a freshman at the University of Alabama, wide-eyed and full of hopes, dreams and naivety. Elsewhere in the state, Auburn, then ranked No. 2 in the nation, was set to take on 15-point underdog Arkansas in an 11 a.m. game at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

That morning, I found myself tailgating for the Alabama/Duke game in front of Farrah Hall* with my then-current (now very much former) significant other and his family. I don't know why either. But as tailgating is an all-day affair, we’d been there since 9 a.m. or so. As 11 approached, we all gathered around a small TV to watch the Auburn kickoff. Then it all went to hell.

The nice thing about our sometimes-psychotic rivalry is that even if one finds oneself trapped at an enemy tailgate, it’s a pretty safe bet that the Auburn game will be on somewhere, even if it is so everyone there can root against the Tigers. The truly awful thing about our sometimes-psychotic rivalry is that when Auburn lays an egg, fans of a team destined to go 6-7 take particular glee in the aforementioned egg-laying**.

While 2006 saw Auburn win 11 games***, Arkansas was decidedly not one of them. Darren McFadden and Felix Jones were basically unstoppable. I’m really not sure why Auburn even bothered showing up. It wasn’t my first taste of what has been dubbed (not by me, sadly) the Hog Hex, but to me, it remains the most bitter.

Since then:

2007 (Tuberville, away): W (barely), Auburn 9, Arkansas 7

That one time the Riverboat Gambler was anything but a gambler and gave the entire fanbase hypertension.

2008 (Tuberville, home): L, Arkansas 25, Auburn 22

I blocked this one out. Seriously. I have zero recollection of this game. From the box score, it appears Auburn led most of the game and then lost it in the fourth quarter. Sounds about right.

2009 (Chizik, away): L, Arkansas 44, Auburn 23

This is the one we roasted the pig for, so that’s on me. In case you’ve forgotten, under no circumstances are you to roast a pig for the Arkansas game. It causes ranked Auburn teams to lose to unranked Arkansas teams.

2010 (Chizik, home): W, Auburn 65, Arkansas 43

2010 is a statistical anomaly that I contribute to the magic of that season. Everything went Auburn’s way in that game, and not even the Hog Hex could stop those Tigers. True story: Of the home games, that one was the most fun. The atmosphere was electric and the fourth quarter was just plain fun.

2011 (Chizik, away): L, Arkansas 38, Auburn 14

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

2012 (Chizik, home): L, Arkansas 24, Auburn 7

Unfortunately, I actually went to this game. Two weeks (one being a bye) after Auburn almost upset LSU (a game I also attended), I expected the Tigers to at least put up a fight against John L. Smith’s struggling Razorbacks (ULM beat them, if you’ll remember). They didn’t. They quit. I saw Emory Blake give up on a block, and it broke my heart.

Fast forward to 2013.

Auburn is having a pretty good season. Ranked No. 8/11, the Tigers head to Fayetteville as eight-point favorites over the unranked Hogs. While kickoff isn’t until 5 p.m., that dang Hox Hex looms large.

This Auburn team seems to have used each game this season to answer questions, be they ours or maybe even its own. We may not always like the answers, but when the clock hits 00:00, at least we know a little more about our Tigers. I expect Saturday, for better or worse, to be no exception. Is Auburn worthy of a top-10 ranking?**** How will its defense fare against "Normal American football"? What is receiving? Will Nick Marshall learn to slide, or will he just keep hitting people because it hurts so good? Why does the Arkansas team run out of a giant pig nose? Will this lady be there? On paper, Auburn should win this game. In reality, this game should show us if the Gus Bus is equipped to handle success while fending off hexes.

Maybe I was just traumatized by the Tuberville/Chizik letdowns. Call me cautiously optimistic. Maybe cautiously paranoid. Even playing an unranked opponent, I won’t be comfortable unless we’re up by at least 40. Anything less, and I'm back to pacing and climbing on furniture.

To make a long story longer, I hate playing Arkansas.

And that brings us to Bert*****. He isn’t on Mullen’s level of douchebaggery yet, but I want him destroyed all the same. Gus’ "gimmicky high school offense" may not be "Normal" or "American," but Tre Mason, Corey Grant, and Cameron Artis-Payne are coming for you, Bert. Dee Ford and Carl Lawson, too. Let’s just hope Auburn included them on the tape, lest you cry foul.

If you’re making the long trip to Fayetteville this weekend, best of luck to you. May our Tigers call the Hogs to their final resting place and may the late kickoff be ever in our favor.

Until next time — War Eagle.

*Foreshadowing: Farrah Hall is where the University of Alabama School of Law was once located many moons ago.

**I know it goes both ways. I’m elated every time Alabama loses. But that particular day, surrounded by those particular people, I had never been more miserable.

***No really. No one outside of our fanbase remembers that. Auburn lost to Arkansas and Georgia that year and that’s it. You’ll notice that the 2006 national champion Florida Gators do not appear in the loss column. That was a damned good team that couldn't get it together at the right times.

****I don’t know if Auburn is worthy of a top-10 ranking or not, but I fully believe the team believes it’s worthy of a top-10 ranking. So if Auburn is going to play like it, who are we to disagree? Onward and upward, Tigers.

*****Yes, I know his name is Bret. So does everyone else. Embrace it. What is your life, Bert? I'm happy to announce that he has officially joined the list of coaches in over their heads that I'd like to see cry, which includes Mullen, Dabo, and now good old Normal American Bert. Do this for me, Auburn.

The 2013 Florida Atlantic Game

After last week's big win in College Station the 6 and 1 Tigers take on FAU in Jordan Hare favored by about 28 over the 2 and 5 Owls.  FAU is no Western Carolina.  Can the Tigers win this game decisively as we would like?  Will there be a letdown?  The Tigers moved up to 11th in the BCS standings.  The season is ours to claim.

FIRST QUARTER

The Tigers receive and from the 22 drive right down the field 78 yards for the touchdown.
Nick Marshall has a 46 yard run.
Tre Mason runs it in from the 8.
6 play drive all on the ground.

Auburn 7  FAU 0

From the 25 FAU picks up a first down but there's a fumble picked up by Whitehead and he runs it to the FAU 45.
First play from scrimmage and Corey Grant races down the right sideline untouched.  Touchdown Auburn!

Auburn 14  FAU 0

From the 25 after one first down the Owls punt.
Chris Davis runs the punt from the goal line to the FAU 28.
Great punt return!
From the 10 Marshall runs around left end untouched with great blocking.  Walks into the end zone.
The Tigers have yet to attempt a pass.

Auburn 21  FAU 0

No letdown yet!
Our defense has given a few yards up the middle.  Let's stop that.
Another first down but then an Owl punt.
5:08 to go in the first.
AU starts on the 15.
For the first time Auburn has to punt from midfield.
Fair catch at the 8 with 1:47 to go.
The Owls are three and out.
There's a short punt to the FAU 48.
On the last play of the quarter Grant sprints for 16 yards.
It's all Auburn so far.

SECOND QUARTER

Marshall gets sacked and is sitting on the ground on the FAU 39.
It might be the right shoulder.  Nick walks off the field and here comes JJ.
First play 3rd and 13 JJ hits Coates for 38 yards and the touchdown.  Just like that!
Jeremy Johnson comes in and on the first play finds a wide-open receiver.

Auburn 28  FAU 0

Let's hope NM is okay, but Jeremy Johnson sure looks good out there!
FAU is three and out.
Auburn gets the ball back on their 22 still early in the second quarter.
Quentin Riggins says NM is in the locker room getting evaluated.  It's his right shoulder.
Q thinks he will be okay but we will see.
In the Wildcat CAP runs for 33 yards up the middle.
The drive stalls and Auburn punts from the Owl 44.
Fair catch at the 15.
10:45 to go.
The visitors drive to the AU 47 but have to punt from there.
Auburn starts at their 19.
JJ is the quarterback.
The Tigers drive for a 44-yd. field goal.  JJ hits a couple of passes but misses on a couple.

Auburn 31  FAU 0

The Owls are three and out with 3:35 left.
Davis drops the punt but falls on it at the AU 33.
First play 67 yards JJ to Coates and he walk into the end zone.
Coates is becoming our go to receiver.
Lightning strikes!

Auburn 38  FAU 0

Now we know why Jeremy Johnson wasn't redshirted.
No hangover from the last week's big win at TAMU.
There's a completion to the Auburn 29 over Mincy.
After an incompetion their QB runs around left end for the touchdown.

Auburn 38  FAU 7

With 2:13 FAU gets on the board.
NM is out of the locker room but he won't play anymore tonight.
No need to risk putting him back out there tonight.
Bray returns the KO to the 30.
The drive ends with a missed 40-yd. FG attempt on the last play of the half.
We see Nick Marshall on the sidelines in street clothes smiling.  Hope he's ready to go next week!

THIRD QUARTER

First play FAU gets a long completion to the Auburn 35.  We can't have this.
First down to the AU 19.
There's sack back to the 25 by Dee Ford.
There's a completion to the 14.
Pass incomplete in the end zone.
The FG attempt is good.
The Owls open the second half with a drive to 3 points.

Auburn 38  FAU 10

FAU has now scored on two straight possessions.  We don't need to get sloppy here.
There's a good runback by Bray and tacking on a penalty and AU starts on the Owl 46.
CAP makes a bull run to the one and two plays later he rams over the goal line.
Our offense responds.

Auburn 45  FAU 10

FAU is three and out.
AU starts on the 22.
The quarter ends with Auburn driving with a first down at the FAU 21.
Kiehl Frazier is in at QB.

FOURTH QUARTER

There is an interception off the pass of JJ at the 2 yard line.  The ball was tipped.
FAU at their 2.
3 and out.
Marcus Davis loses 7 on the return and Auburn starts on their 36.
Jonathan Wallce is in at QB.
On 3rd and 11 Wallace runs for the first down.
On the next play Jonathan Ford runs to the 13.  Is he fast or what?!
Wallace to the 7.
False start moves the ball back 5 yards.
We are already over 600 total yards.
Two straight comical spots by the refs and we give the ball up on downs at the 4.
Our announcers are laughing at the terrible ball spots by the officials.
Utterly amazing poor officiating.
The spot of Wallace's was at least 2 yards short where he ended up.
3 and out.
AU at their 43.
The Tigers are three and out with about 3 minutes left.
Fair catch at the FAU 13.
Three and out.
Auburn runs the clock out.

Auburn 45  FAU 10

Not perfect, but no letdown.  The Tigers take care of business.
Now it's on to Fayetteville!!!

Florida Atlantic Preface

So here we are with a 6 and 1 Auburn football team that has already exceeded expectations.  It's hard to believe that a year ago we were 1 and 6.  We have some new players mixing with last year's players playing to their maximum.  It's all about coaching.  This much is clear.

Expectations are getting out-of-hand.  Sure, this team could run the table, but this team could lose some games too.  I hope the coaches have this team playing one game at a time.

I understand that FA is 2 and 5 and that AU is a 24 point favorite.  What I hope to see is a team that first of all wins of course, but also a team that takes care of business, doesn't play down to the opposition, and wins like it should rather than slopping around.

Let's take of this game like we should and head to Fayetteville.

TAMU Postmortem

We still revel in the afterglow of yesterday's thrilling 45 to 41 victory over those Aggies.  What a great feeling it is!  The future looks bright for Auburn football both today and in seasons beyond with Coach Malzain.  I can't wait to see how this season turns out.

The 2013 Texas A & M Game

When was the last Auburn was on CBS in the afternoon?  Here we are today from Kyle Field.   Can Auburn hang in there with the Aggies?  The home team is a 13/14 point favorite.  We'll soon have some answers.

FIRST QUARTER

That didn't take long.  The Aggies receive and march 67 yards for the touchdown in 6 plays and a minute forty-one.

AUBURN 0  TAMU 7                                                                                                                         From the 15 the Tigers run to a first down at the 24.
Another first down to the 34.
There's a long run by Grant to TAMU 32.
Mason runs for 15 and a first down to the 18.
Mar
shall runs for the touchdown from the 16.
Our offense matches the opening Aggie touchdown.  This is what we need.

AUBURN 7  TAMU 7

From their 25 we push them back to the 12 but there is a long pass completion but then Ryan Smith picks up the interception on a deflection close to the ground!  Great pick by Smith!
AU has the ball on their Tiger 38.
Louis goes to the Aggie 30 on a reverse.
Coates make a catch.
2nd and 7 from the 15.
Pass interferene and AU is first down at the 6.
Fumbled snap and a yard gain.
Grant loses back to the 8.
Marshall scrambles and we have to settle for the FG attempt.
Not good.  We gotta score TDs in the Red Zone.  First and goal at the 6 and we have to settle for the 3.
Points and we take the lead but this can cost us the game before it's over.

AUBURN 10  TAMU 7

TAMU starts at the 25.
First down at the 35 and on the next play the short pass and the receiver goes right down the sideline for the score.  We had two defenders out there but the receiver gets down the sideline easily.

AUBURN 10  TAMU 14

The Aggies can score so quickly.  It's amazing.
AU returns to the 20.
First down at the 44.
But Marshall drops the ball on the next play and the Aggies recover at the AU 49.
Big mistake by Nick kMarshall.
The ball flies out of his hands.  Not a big hit at all.
Sooner or late our defense has to stop these guys.
First down at the AU 37.
The Aggies march again and we cannot stop them.
Manziel scrambles and scrambles and throws long and Ryan White intercepts at the 4 yard line!
That's the second pick off Johnny Football.
Mason gains 3 or 4.  The clock is stopped at 1:45 with an injured Aggie.
On 3rd and 2 Marshall hits Prosch for 58 yards to the Aggie 32.
TO Auburn with 30 seconds in the first with Auburn facing a 2nd and 10 at the Aggie 32.
Marshall runs to the 13 as the first quarter ends.
We will start the second quarter with the Tigers first and ten at the Aggie 13.

SECOND QUARTER

Grant to the 9 with JJ at QB.
Marshall to the 7.
Mason just short of the first down at the 3.
Going for it on 4th Mason is hit at the 5 but keeps churning to the one!
Mason just short of the goal line for no gain.
Mason goes in untouched but there is a false start.  We can't have that.
Now we're back at the 6.
Marshall is dropped at the 12 as he holds on to the ball too long.  Dang!
We have a penalty that knocks a TD off the board.
Then on 3rd Marshall hit Quan Bray in the end zone for the touchdown.                                                   What a big play!!!  Twelve plays/96 yards/over 6 minutes.  Maybe our best drive of the year.
AUBURN 17  TAMU 14

TAMU starts at the 25.
They've only run 18 plays.  Our offense has run 31 yards.  We have a big advantage in time of possession.
THREE AND OUT AS OUR DEFENSE HARASSES MANZIEL.
The punt goes into the end zone.
Again, a three and out for our defense!
AU on the 20.  Let's keep that offense going.
Now Auburn goes 3 and out quickly.  Our defence holds but our offense sputters as it is prone to do.
Marshall just isn't very accurate in his passing.  We have open receivers.  I don't understand why NM consistently throws behind the receivers.
TAMU starts at their 32.  This is not good, giving the ball right back to Manziel when we seem to have the momentum.
Quickly the Aggies are at the AU 40 running the ball.
First down to the AU 22 running the ball.  Not good.
Our defense holds to a field goal attempt.
The 37 yard FG is good but at least our defense doesn't give up the TD.

AUBURN 17  TAMU 17

5:38 to go in the half.
The Tigers start at the 25 after the touchback.
The Tigers go three and out for the second straight time as the clock winds down to under 4 minutes.
Not good to give them the ball back.
TAMU is at the 26 and 3:36 left and plenty of time left.
Our offense has bogged down the last 2 times and we cannot continue to do this.
First down to the AU 48.
To the AU 45.
To the AU 40 and a first down around the 2 minute mark.
2nd and 9 and a TAMU TO.
1:55 left.
THERE IS A HUGE SACK ON MANZIEL AND TAMU HAS TO PUNT!
Unfortunately the punt dies at the one.
We gotta punch the ball out because TAMU has two timeouts left.
Marshall throws downfield to an open Coates but underthrows him as usual.  Oh my.  Should have a 99 yard TD pass.
3rd and 7 with timeouts left for TAMU.  They use one of them here.
This was set up by that first down long pass but Marshall makes a poor throw.  The result could be the Aggies getting the ball back.
There is a long pass, a fantastic throw, and Coates can't come up with the grab.  There was a TD that Coates can't handle.  Too, bad.  Either Marshall makes a poor throw or our receiver can't catch the ball.  that was a great throw by Marshall.
TAMU is at the AU 42 an on the first play there is the touchdown pass.  This is what happens when we don't take advantage of our offensive opportunitites.  How disappointing.  We are playing them toe-to-toe and our offense goes 3 and out.  Our offense has been inconsistent all year long.  This is nothing new.
This is as heart-breaking end of the first half.  We can't keep this up and give Manziel field positon under these circumstances.

AUBURN 17  TAMU 24

We had the lead but our offense sputters as Coates can't catch a pass that would have been a 96 yard touchdown pass.
AU is at the 30 with 20 seconds left.
Marshall carries and the half will end.
Auburn will get the ball to start the second half as this half ends with 3 straight AU three and outs.
Will our offense show up in the second half?

THIRD QUARTER

Grant does a good return but a block in the back means we start at the 8.
First down to the 19.
First down to the 35.
First down to the AU 47.
The drive stalls at midfield.
We have to punt from the 50.  A long pass to Coates down the field could have been a better throw.
Fair catch at the TAMU 13.
No score on our first possession.
I hope this game doesn't get away from us.  Our defense is going to have to come to the rescue if we are to win this game.  If we get behind by 2 touchdowns the game is probably over.
TAMU starts on their 13.
We were moving the ball on the ground but then there were 2 incomplete passes.
3rd and 7.
TAMU goes three and out on their first possession.
AU will start at their 35  The two teams trade punts on their initial possessions of the half.
The Tigers cross midfield.
First down to the Aggie 37.
Marshall loses 6 sacked with confusion in the backfield.
There is a double screen TD pass to Coates for 43 yards!  Great call, great run by Coates.
We have a ballgame.
A 43 touchdown pass to Coates and we are tied midway thru the third quarter.

AUBURN 24  TAMU 24

6 plays 65 yards.  Not bad.
Good coverage and TAMU is at their 18.
Manziel picks up the first down on a 3rd and 7 with a QB draw.
Manziel is quick but he will also lower his head in a crowd.
Gabe Wright is injured as the Aggies face a 2 and 8.
The Aggies are moving the ball but no big plays so far in this drive.
Manziel scrambles and they are inside AU territory.
They are driving but sort of taking their time.
But there is the big play a 37 yard TD pass to their big receiver Evans.  We keep Manziel in the pocket but he has too much time and finds a receiver well covered but a great play by Manziel.

AUBURN 24  TAMU 31

9 plays 82 yards by the home team.
Bray comes out of the end zone to the AU 40 straight up the field.
JJ throws behind a receiver.
NM overthrows a recever.
We are quickly 3rd and 10.
Another incomplete and we are quickly three and out after good field positon on the KO return.
Those passes were off-kilter.
Fair catch at the TAMU 22.  Not a good punt with the wind at our backs.
Our defense has to rise up.
It's time for a TO.
But there's a long pass to the Auburn 47 on a screen pass.
We're in trouble if they score here.
Manziel QB draw to the Auburn 20 with less than 2 minutes to go in the quarter.
4th and foot and they fake the field goal and make the first down to the 8.  How can we allow that?
The quarter ends with TAMU at 2nd and goal from the 5.  It is not looking good.  We are wearing down.

FOURTH QUARTER

As Pat Dye says, there are no miracles on the football field.  We will lose this game because our offense can't keep up.  For the most part our defense has played pretty good though they are looking to wear down in the final quarter.
On second and 10 after a penaly Manziel runs to the 2 but drops to the ground in pain.
Incomplete pass and it's 4th and goal at the 2.
The short FG attempt is good and TAMU takes a 10 point lead.
It remains to be seen if Manziel can return to the game.

AUBURN 24  TAMU 34

No room for error.  Our offense has to produce now early in the 4th quarter.
No doubts!
The Tigers drive quickly for the touchdown.
There is a long beautiful pass to Coates.
A great run up the middle by CAP.
Marshall runs it in from the 13.
We have ourselves a ballgame!

AUBURN 31  TAMU 34

I lose some words here and pick up with Auburn clinging to a lead late.

AUBURN 45  TAMU 41.

With 43 seconds to go TAMU is at our 18.
Manziel is sacked at the 26.  Timeout TAMU with 28 seconds to go.
Manziel is tackled by Kris Frost at the 21.                                                                                                  Fourth down.  Here is the game.
Last timeout by the Aggies.
On fourth and last gasp Auburn stuffs Manziel for a huge loss.
What a huge win in the history of Auburn football.
Un-be-liev-able!

FINAL SCORE

AUBURN 45  TAMU 41

I can't get enough of it.  What a win.  What a football team!
The offense drove for 2 straight  TDs in the fourth quarter and our defense made the big stop at the end sacking Manziel for a huge loss.  What a game!  What a team!

Texas A & M Preface

Is this a big game or what?  The Tigers go to College Station to play the 7th ranked team in the country with both teams standing at 5 and 1.  The Aggies are a 14 point favorite with the defending Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.  Say what you will, Johnny Football is a fantastic football player to watch in action.  We have the slow down their offense as best we can and play ball control as much as possible.  Hope comes from the fact that TAMU is 13th in the SEC in rushing defense and last in overall defense.  At least we should score on them.  I'll be excited at the start this one.  This game will certainly be a measuring stick for the program.

Western Carolina Postmortem

The Tigers take care of business.  They take care of business in a crisp and efficient manner.  Now it's on to College Station, Texas.

I watched the Aggies beat Ole Miss 41 to 38 last night.  This game is winnable though I don't expect to win out there.  The difference is that our offense will not sustain enough drives.  TAMU will get their points.  I don't think we can quite catch up to them.  One good thing is that we might be able to run the ball on them.  Another good thing is that Manziel got nicked up last night.  Maybe he will not be as mobile as usual.

At least I will watch the game not thinking that we will get embarassed as we were under Chizik.

Western Carolina Preface

The best thing about this homecoming game is that it's an afternoon game.  The worst thing is that it's on on pay-per-view in Alabama.  We'll listen on the radio like the old days.

The big thing is that Nick Marshall sustained some kind of knee injury in the Ole Miss game and his participation in this game in which Auburn is heavily favored is doubtful.

We get the impression that Jeremy Johnson will get his first start.  This makes the game more interesting than it would given the opponent.

The 2013 Western Carolina Game

Finally a day game!  Let's play under sunshine the way football is supposed to be played.  I hate night games because I hate waiting around all day for kickoff.  Auburn is supposed to beat the Catamounts.  Let's hope they do with freshman Jeremy Johnson getting his first start at quarterback.  He is supposed to be our most athletically gifted QB.  Nick Marshall is being held out because of a knee issue.  Who knows which one will start next week at TAMU.

FIRST QUARTER

The Tigers receive and march 74 yards right down the field.  Mason runs 20 yards for the score.  Jeremy Johnson is one for one on the drive.

Auburn 7  WC 0

WC is quickly 3 and out.
From midfield AU marches quickly again for the score.
JJ completes a 19 yd. pass to Tony Stevens.  The score comes from an 8-yd. strike to Jay Prosch in end zone.  JJ is 3 for 3 so far.  That was his first TD pass.  The first of many we hope.
47 yards in 5 plays.

Auburn 14  WC 0

WC gets two first downs and all of a sudden they are at the AU 29.  There is a long run by their QB when we pressure but their guy escapes for about 20 yards.
There is a big sack back to the 40.  Dee Ford takes down the quarterback.
The drive ends at the Auburn 32 and long FG is good.  WC is on the board.

Auburn 14  WC 3

There goes the shutout.
The Tiger offense wastes no time again.
From the 35 the Tigers go to the Catamount 47 and JJ hits Ricardo Louis on a post and there you go!         JJ is 5 of 6 so far for 95 yards and 2 TDs.

Auburn 21  WC 3

WC is three and out.
The punt dies at the AU 13 with a good Catamount bounce.
First down on a third down pass to the 26.
There's a hold on the next play.
The quarter ends.

SECOND QUARTER

Ricardo Louis gains 30 yards on the speed sweep.
Corey Grant speeds about 50 yards for the touchdown.  It sounds so easy today as it should.
Auburn 28  WC 3

The Catamounts get out to midfield but punt from there.
The Tigers have the ball back on the 13.
After one first down JJ throws the interception at the WC 26 as Louis gets out-jumped.
On third down Mincy gets the pick and AU is in business at the WC 48.
After a procedure penalty Mason zips 53 yards for the touchdown!

Auburn 35  WC 3

WC is three and out.
The Tigers drive again.
There are two nice passes to Melvin Ray.
The score comes on a 22-yd. pass to Stevens.
That's 3 TD passes for JJ.
1:38 left in the half.

Auburn 42  WC 3

JJ is a great thrower Stan White says.  He throws a right spiral.  He is athletic but hasn't tried to run today but he can.  We are talking about a great passer who is very athletic.
The half ends
The Tigers take command like they should  So far there is no homecoming slopping around.
The potential of Jeremy Johnson is exciting to think about.

THIRD QUARTER

WC goes three and out and the Tigers drive for another score.
JJ to Quan Bray from the 3 for the TD.

Auburn 49  WC 3

CAP rumbles 25 yards with JW at QB for the next Auburn touchdown.

Auburn 56  WC 3

FOURTH QUARTER

On the first play of the final quarter Jonathan Ford, moved from running back to defensive back in August, blazes for a TD.  The snap is mishandled on the point after attempt.

Auburn 62  WC 3

Ford is back out there on defense.
WC is three and out.
The Tigers are truly emptying the bench.  Over a hundred players could see the field today.
JJ finishes the day 17 for 21 for 201 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Will he play at TAMU next week?
Chandler Shakespeare is getting some carries.  Love that name!
4th and goal from the 10 and it's as if Auburn doesn't want to score again as the Tigers run Shakespeare up the middle play after play.
So WC gets the ball back inside their 10 with 4:54 to go.
For the first time in school history Auburn goes over 700 yards in total offense.
Jeremy Johnson makes a great debut.
We win the game like we are suppose to win against an outmanned opponent.

Auburn 62  Western Carolina 3

Next week comes TAMU.  We might have a football game next week.  It's hard  to see us winning but it won't be like last year against Johnny Football.

The Ole Miss Game - Postmortem

I'm just glad to beat those guys.  Our defense is interesting.  It gives up chunks of yardage but seems to rise up when it needs to.  So many times it seems that we let opponents get into scoring position and then we hold them to a field goal.  The offense shows signs of greatness, then we have 3 and outs and fumble.

In this game we saw the scrambling and running ability of Nick Marshall.  Our passing must improve though.  We saw the raw ability of Carl Lawson at defensive end.  We have a good group of freshmen.  I hope that our injured are back soon.

After Western Carolina we'll be 5 and 1.  We'll see what happens after that.

The 2013 Ole Miss Game

Ole Miss comes to Auburn for each team's fourth game of the season.  Both teams are 3 and 1.  The Rebels lost to Alabama last week.  Auburn lost to LSU two weeks ago.  The Tigers have the benefit of a week off before this game.  You never know if that helps or hurts.  It could go either way.  Ole Miss is a 3-point favorite.  I don't like that.  We should never be an underdog to Mississippi especially at home.  The game is a 6 o'clock kickoff on ESPNU.

FIRST QUARTER

The Rebels receive and start at their 27.
They move inside Auburn territory but a big sack forces OM to punt from midfield.
The Tigers start at their 20 after the punt into the end zone.
The Tigers quickly move into OM territory after a big gain by Mason turning a short pass into a huge gain.
There is a big run by Marshall.
There is a sterling run by Mason down to the one.
Mason goes in on the next play!
The try for 2 fails.  A better pass and it would have been good.
The Tigers move smartly right down the field 80 yards on their first possession for the touchdown.

Auburn 6  Ole Miss 0

The Rebels drive to the AU 25 but there our defense stiffens and the 42-yrd. FG is good.
Once again our defense bends but doesn't break.  On at least 2 of their long gains we miss tackles at the line of scrimmage.

Auburn 6  Ole Miss 3

As we begin the next Auburn possession Georgia and Tennessee go into overtime in Knoxville.
The Tigers start at the 25 after the touchback.
After one first down we punt from the AU 46.  Two passes should have been caught.
Ole Miss starts at their 20 after a 39-yrd. punt with 5:09 left in the first quarter.
Georgia kicks a FG in overtime to beat Tennessee 34 to 31.
Ole Miss moves the ball right down the field to the Auburn 22 but on 2nd and 10 Robinson Therezie intercepts and runs all the way to the end zone!!!  How electrifying!!!  The point after is good.

Auburn 13  Ole Miss 3

That was Bo Wallace's first interception of the year.  It was a short pass attempt and Therezie tipped the ball up to himself and had clear sailing in front of him.
From the 25 OM moves to midfield.
The quarter ends with OM facing 3rd and 9 at the Auburn 49.

SECOND QUARTER

On the last play of the quarter Cassanova McKinzy is injured and has to be carted off the field.  It looks like a serious injury.  McKinzy is immobilized being taken from the field.
Okay.  After a delay we start the second quarter.
Pass incomplete and the Johnny Rebs have to punt!
Auburn starts on the 17.
Marshall misses a wide-open receiver.  His accuracy is not good.
Another incompletion.  Our offense is stagnating.
Our offense has got to get it going.  We are not going to keep this team under 13 points for the duration.
OM starts on their 31.
OM moves to a 4th and 1 and they go for it.
First down Ole Miss.
But OM moves to a 4th and 8 and punts into the end zone.  The Tigers start at their 20.  Somehow our defense has held the Rebels to 3 points so far but it won't continue indefinitely.
Our offense plays in spurts.  We have to be more consistent.
Two first downs and Auburn crosses midfield.
Pounding on the ground AU runs to a first down at the Rebel 11.
We are obviously running the ball to let our defense rest.
CAP runs to the 5.  Nick Marshall runs it in from the five!
That's an 80 yard drive entirely on the ground except for a 5-yd. pass to Marcus Davis.
12 plays 80 yards over 4 minutes taken off the clock.

Auburn 20  Ole Miss 3

The highlight of that drive was great running by Nick Marshall.  He won't run over people but he will juke and run around defenders.
Our defense bends but doesn't break once again.  OM gets a long pass completion on a 4th and 2 from around midfield in the big play in the drive.
The 45-yd. FG attempt is good.  Their kicker has a big leg.
Carl Lawson got a big sack on 3rd down to force the field goal.

Auburn 20  Ole Miss 6

The first half ends.  We have to be pleased.  Our announcers say this is Auburn's best half of the season.  But Ole Miss can score.  This game will likely be a nail-biter before it's over.  We get the ball to start the second half.  It's great to hold them to just two field goals.

THIRD QUARTER

The Coach says at the half that we need to run the ball, get that initial first down, and limit Ole Miss's big plays.
The kickoff goes out of bounds so we start on the 35.
A first down is called back after a late holding call.
Alas, a penalty results in a 3 and out.  Not the start we needed.  This game will go down to the last play.
OM will start at their 23.
Tragically on a 4th down around midfield OM gets a run down to the Auburn 6 on a toss sweep.
We were not ready for that play on 4th down.  Big, big play for Ole Miss.
2nd and goal from the 5 and OM calls timeout.
This is not the start we wanted in the second half but I am not surprised.  If our offense cannot pick up that initial first down it leads to trouble.
Our defense holds yet once again and OM has to settle for the field goal.

Auburn 20  Ole Miss 9

At least we held them to 3 but this cannot continue.  Our offense has to show up or we will lose.
We start at the 25.
There is a pass to Mason on a wheel route.
There's an 18 yard by Marshall.
The Tigers move to 3rd and goal from the 5.
Marshall runs it in from the 5.  Great fake to Grant.  Marshall has been great running the ball tonight.

Auburn 27  Ole Miss 9

The best part of our offense so far has been the running of Nick Marshall.  If he could only hit open receivers and the receivers would catch the ball he would be a great quarterback.
We hear that McKinzy is back on the sidelines wearing a neck brace.
Montravius Adams is out for this game with some kind of leg injury.  He is sitting on the bench still in uniform.
OM starts on their 20.
Quickly on the first play OM gets a pass completion just across the 50.
On the second play from there OM gets the TD pass.  UGH!
The two teams exchange touchdowns.  This game will go to the wire doubt it not.

Auburn 27  Ole Miss 16

Starting from the 25 will we get that initial first down?
It seems so important to get that initial first down for this offense.
Alas, we go 3 and out.  This was not a good possession.
It's nervous time already.
OM fair catches at the 30with 3:53 to go in the third and OM has the momentum.
OM has the ball back again quickly.
OM goes for it on 4th down again at their 47.
We stop them at our 49!
A short pass completion but an immediate tackle.
AU as the ball back.  Let 's move it!
There's a great run by Mason to the OM 36.
Auburn has 2nd and 6 as the quarter ends.

FOURTH QUARTER

Marshall carries for 15 yards to the 17.
BUT there's a fumble and they run the ball back to the 44.
THEN there is a 9 yard sack by Auburn!
3rd and 19 from the AU 36.
There's another sack!  Ole Miss goes backwards 10 yards on that possession.
OM punts 66 yards to the end zone.
Our defense rises up!
Too bad about the turnover but our defense certainly amazingly rises to the occasion.
Auburn drives to the 17, OM takes the ball away, but our defense pushes them back and now early in the final quarter we have the ball at our 20.  This game is far from over as we cling to an 11 point lead.
13:15 to go.
Two first downs pushes the ball out to the AU 46.
Marshall runs around left end for 16 yards.
3rd and 7 at the OM 37 with a timeout.
Mason is stopped at the line of scrimmage.
4th and 7.
I can't believe it but we try and miss a 54-yd. field goal.  I don't understand that.  Why don't you punt the ball and at least put them on their 20.  We may rue this decision before it's over.
So Ole Miss starts at their 37 and our lead is only 11.  As I have said all along, this game will go down to the final play.
There's no way Parkay would make a 54 yarder.
First down to the 48.
Long completion inside the AU 15.  Ole Miss is in business.
There's a screen pass for the touchdown and here we go.
Ole Miss goes for 2.
The pass into the end zone is incomplete.
Oh, my.  Ole Miss scores in a hurry.  Our offense has to do something or we will lose this game.

Auburn 27  Ole Miss 22

Eight and a half minutes to go and Stan White says our offense has to answer.
Nick Marshall is kind of gimpy-legged.
Ole Miss has run 77 plays.  Our defense has to be wearing down.
OM has success on defense in shooting gaps.  We control the line of scrimmage if they run a base defense.
Good runback by Mason from the goal line to the AU 37.
CAP runs to the OM 39 but loses the ball and OM recovers.  OH, my!
How tragic.  Great run but the turnover is a killer.
We led 20 to 6 at the half and now this.
On third Auburn intercepts!  Ryan Smith does the honors at midfield.  Is that big or what!
From the OM 46 Mason picks up 4.
Marshall runs gingerly for 2.
Third and 4 from the OM 40.
Timeout Auburn.
5:38 to go.
Oh, please a TD somehow here would give us a win most likely.
3rd and 4.  Big play coming.
Incomplete pass as Marshall scrambles and lobs it up for naught.
With 5:26 to go Parkay punts and the ball is downed at the one yard line.
OM has to go 99 yards.
Incomplete long pass.
Incomplete pass at the 20.
Incomplete pass again.
Ole Miss has to punt in tight formation from the back of their end zone and the punter shanks it!
Auburn gets the ball on the OM 31.
Mason runs for 3 and there is an unsportsmanlike call on the Rebels.
The ball moves inside the 15.
2nd down and 4 at the 7.
Mason to the 6.
Big play with a third and 3 at the 6.
No first down.
No touchdown.
Ole Miss calls its last timeout.
Mason is stopped at the line of scrimmage as a blitzer takes him down.  Otherwise it would have been a first down.
The field goal is good and Auburn leads by 8 with 3:02 to go.
Our defense has to show up one more time.

Auburn 30  Ole Miss 22

A touchdown might have sealed it but Ole Miss is not down and they have plenty of time.  Our defense has to get pressure on Bo Wallace.
OM starts at their 25.
After one first down the game ends with defensive fireworks.
Gabe Wright bulls his way thru the middle of the line and sacks Bo Russell.
On the 4th down play Carl Lawson will not be denied and drops Russell again!!!
Wow, what a great way to end this game.
Auburn beats 3-point favorite Ole Miss.  I hope we are never an underdog to Ole Miss again at home.
This is a great win.  We had some turnovers that could have lost us the game but our defense did what it had to do.  Our defense plays hard and is plucky.  Our defense made the plays when it needed to.  Give the credit to this defense.
We go to 4 and 1 and I assume we beat Western Carolina next week.
At the very least this team should get to 6 wins in Coach Malzahn's first year with the future looking bright.

Ole Miss Preface

What galls me is that we are 3-point underdog to OLE MISS at home!  How can this be?  Both teams are 3 & 1.  We should never be an underdog to Ole Miss.  Not ever!
