The Thing I'm Thinking of Most

What crazy things might happen in this year's Auburn-LSU game?  Last year it was the bad luck at the start of the game that doomed us.  Will a building catch on fire during the game?  I hope not.  Will a bunch of interceptions turn the game around?  Only if it's like 1994.  The thing that gives me the most pause is that historically Auburn has not had the best of luck against LSU.  I hope that changes this year.

The LSU Line

Auburn is favored by 8.  I was expecting about 3.  I hope the oddsmakers are right.

After La Tech

Now comes the fun with a murderous SEC schedule starting with LSU next Saturday.  We knew this was coming and now it is here.  Speculation is useless.  The LSU series is one of the most memorable in Auburn football history ranking just below Alabama and perhaps equal with Georgia.  Let's just see what happens.  I suspect this will be another unpredictable Auburn-LSU game.

La. Tech 2014

I have never liked games like this, games that we are supposed to win handily.  The Tigers are a 33 point favorite on Homecoming.  Traditionally we slop around on Homecoming.  I expect some of the same today.  If we beat the spread it will because of a late scoring spurt.  Kickoff is at 3 on the SEC Network.  We need to sharpen up in this game to get ready for that brutal SEC stretch coming up.

FIRST QUARTER

The Tigers receive and are three and out.  Not so good.
La. Tech starts on their 28.
The visitors are three and out.
AU has the ball back on the 24.  Back where we started.
The Tigers are three and out again.  Our offense is not into the game yet.  What is the deal?
The Bulldogs get the back back quickly.
This cannot continue, but it is Homecoming and I have seen this so many times before
On third and 6 Montravious Adams intercepts and rumbles down to the five!
Our DLs are getting their hands up.
Kris Frost knocked the ball up into the air for Adams.
CAP runs it in on the first play around the right side.

Auburn 7  LAT 0

Maybe this will get our offense going.
After one first down the Bulldogs are punting.
Bray fair catches at the 15 or 16.
The Tigers march to a missed 41-yd. FG attempt.  The ball went right and never hooked back left.  Nick Marshall had a nice 31 yard run but for naught.  All of sudden we can't run between the tackles. LAT is selling out at the line and we have to make them pay but so far we haven't.
The Bulldogs are three and out.
Auburn takes up shop at the LAT 43 after a good runback by Bray.
The Tigers are three and out.  Our offense is not yet in this game.
LAT starts at the 17.
The quarter ends with LAT 2nd and 7 at their 20.

SECOND QUARTER

After our defense forces another three and out we start at the La Tech 46 and finally start running down the field but the drive bogs down and we have to settle for a 25 yd. FG.  We should have finished that drive in the end zone.  Our offense has had good field position.  The defense is looking great but the offense is so sluggish.

Auburn 10  LAT 0

The Bulldogs mount a 55 yard drive as our defense gives ground but they miss a 37 yard FG attempt wide right.  Are we lucky or what?  Until that drive our defense looked good.  Our defense did not look good on that possession.  So far Auburn has NOT looked sharp at all.
The Tigers march 80 yards in 12 plays the TD coming on a ONE-HANDED catch by Duke Williams on a tipped ball between two defenders.  That's one for Sports Center!  Most of the yards came on keepers by Nick Marshall.  The scoring pass was the only pass of the drive.

Auburn 17  LAT 0

LAT fumbles after a completed pass and we're in business at the Bulldogs 37.
Grant loses 6.  That doesn't help matters.  TO Auburn with 1:09 left in the half.
The score comes on a beautiful 37 yard strike and an over the shoulder grab by Quan Bray.  That was one of Nick Marshall's best throws.  All of a sudden I feel better about this game.  After a slow start the offense shows some life.

Auburn 24  LAT 0

After a good runback and a penalty and a complete pass LAT is at our 36 quickly.
There's a first down pass to the 16.
On the last play of the half LAT gets a 25 yard FG.
I don't like giving up that last drive by the Bulldogs but so far we have a comfortable lead.

Auburn 24  LAT 3

THIRD QUARTER

La Tech drives deep into Auburn territory but we finally push them back for a punt to the Auburn 6.  We go three and out and La Tech drives quickly again and we may have a ballgame with their QB going in from the one.  Five plays, 49 yards.

Auburn 24  LAT 10

This is not the start we wanted.  Both of our starting linebackers are out with some kind of injuries and our defense looks vulnerable all of a sudden.  Our offense goes three and out on our only possession midway thru the third quarter.  What gives?
From the 30 and we three and out again and have to punt on 4th and 13.
Our offense has not shown up yet in the second half.
LAT fair catches at their 24.
The Bulldogs have all the momentum.
If they score here we'd better wake up.
There's a stop: three and out with 3:59 to go in the quarter.
The punt pins us at the 8.
Where is our offense?
CAP runs to the 25.
Marshall for a couple.
First down pass completion to Coates at the 40.
A holding call on Williams negates another first down pass.
Rushing yards have been scarce between the tackles.
First down to the La Tech 48 as the quarter ends.

FOURTH QUARTER

On a spectacular play Marshall runs around in the back field and finally flings a 44 yard TD pass to Quan Bray in the end zone.  Bray goes up and makes a great catch!  We needed that.

Auburn 31  LAT 10

That was a big play in this football game.  Let's keep it up and finish strong.
The Bulldogs are three and out for the first time in the half.
QUAN BRAY RETURNS THE PUNT 76 YARDS FOR THE TOUCHDOWN!
He got north and south at the initial opening and nobody laid a hand on him.  That was pretty!

Auburn 38  LAT 10

On 4th and one LAT surprises our defense with a completion that takes the ball to the AU 16.
From the 11 on second down there's a sweep around left end and their back walks into the end zone.

Auburn 38  LAT 17

Well, this will be another one of those ugly type wins.  I know we've substituted a lot but I don't like this.
JJ is in at QB.  There is a pass to Duke Williams to the AU 42.  CAP runs for 37 yards.  The Tigers move to the LAT 15 third and 4.
Jeremy Johnson scrambles and then hits CJ Uzomah for the 15 yard TD pass. JJ leads the offense right down the field.

Auburn 45  LAT 17

Our receivers have made some great catches today.  6 plays 75 yards.
LAT punts from their 15.  We get the ball on our 44.
With 3:02 to go we fail on 4th and 3 and LAT gets the ball on their 37.
They punt and we get the ball at our 39 with 1:52 to go.
Peyton Barber gets a carry.  I think he will be bigger than Roc Thomas.
The game ends with Barber getting three straight carries.  I repeat: he is our future big back.
Some good things, some not so good things, and this team is still a work in progress but still a good win.

FINAL SCORE

Auburn 45  LAT 17

Auburn vs. Kansas State Highlights

Toward La. Tech

With success comes greater expectations.  After last year it is natural to compare this year's team with last year's team, which leads to early, picky comparisons.  Auburn did not run the ball as well as expected against Kansas State.  The offense sputtered some.  My point is that each year's team is different.  Criticisms come mainly from having success and expectations.  It's too early to tell about this team.  We are supposed to beat La. Tech.  Historically Auburn is lax on Homecoming.  We shall see what happens.

After Kansas State

The Tigers win a tough road game against a ranked opponent coached by one of the best coaches of all-time in a hostile environment.  Tomorrow for the second Saturday in a row no game.  Then La. Tech and THEN LSU.  I'll be watching LSU and Mississippi State pulling for LSU.  Let's play them October 4th both unbeaten and may the best team win.

Kansas State 2014

We knew before the season started that the Tigers would probably be 2 & 0 facing Kansas State Thursday night on ESPN, and here we are.  Auburn is an 8 or 9 point favorite in Manhattan against Bill Snyder's team.  KS is also 2 and 0.  It's supposed to be a wild atmosphere in Bill Snyder Family Stadium.  The game is a hard sell-out.  The stadium only holds 50,000 plus, but it's supposed to be a tough place to play.  We shall see what unfolds.

FIRST QUARTER

The Tigers receive and from their 35 get to midfield on the first play of the game with a 15 yard pass but that's it and the Tigers punt to the KS 12.
A pass interference call bails KS out on 3rd down.
On the next play KS fumbles and AU recovers on the Wildcat 21.
The Tigers have to settle for the 34 yd. FG after advancing only to the 17.

Auburn 3  Kansas State 0

The Wildcats move out to midfield with a couple of first downs.
The Wildcats drive to the AU 34.
First down to the AU 15.
Pass interference in the end zone.  First down at the 2.  Three penalties so far for Auburn.
Second play interception by Jonathan Jones!!!  The receiver could have caught the ball but it went off his hands up into the air and Jones came down with it.
That's 2 turnovers already for KS.
After a first down run by Grant the Tigers go to 3rd and 11 at the 29.
There's a complete pass but short of the first down and the Tigers are punting.
There's a big punt return to the Auburn 43.
First down to the 31.
The 41-yd. field goal attempt is no good!
The Tigers keep dodging bullets in this first quarter.  Two turnovers and a missed FG by the Wildcats.
The quarter ends with AU picking up a first down at their 34 after two runs by CAP.

SECOND QUARTER

The Tigers advance to the KS 49 but the 3rd down pass is batted down.
The punt only goes to the KS 21 with 13:16 to go in the half.
Our offense has yet to get going.  They've done a good job with our running game but we should have receivers open and Nick has to hit them.
KS is 3 and out.  Good pass defense by Auburn.
Bray fair catches at the AU 38.  Come on offense!
First play, ball batted up into the air, KS intercepts at the AU 41.
KS goes 3 and out but the punt is downed at AU one yard line.  Yikes!
After two first downs out to the 34  Nick finds Duke Williams open on the KS 35 but he drops the well-thrown pass.
That was a touchdown for Duke if he had held on the ball.
A good runback puts the Wildcats at their 43.
KS advances to the Auburn 26.
There's a pass to the Auburn 3.
On second and goal from the 3 KS runs it in.  We have a ballgame.

Auburn 3  Kansas State 7

4:56 to go.  Can our offense respond?
We need to get our rhythm on offense.  Our team is getting tested.
We have not looked very good so far except the defense at times but we trail only by 4.
First down to the AU 47.
Time out facing 2nd and 12.  They have stopped our rushing game like no one I remember in the Malzahn era.
First down to the KS 40.
With 1:34 to go there's a 40 yd. TD pass to Ricardo Louis!!!
THAT was a huge drive and score just before the half.

Auburn 10  Kansas State 7

There is still time for KS to do something.
The pooch kick give KS possession at the KS 36.
With a minute left and a TO KS is at the AU 42.
KS advances to the Auburn 27.
KS is at the AU 14 with 39 seconds left.
TO with KS at the 13.
There's a fumble all the way back to the 25.
With 4 seconds left  KS missed the 42 yd. FG attempt.
The Tigers dodge another bullet.
We gotta pick it up in the second half.
The score remains AU 10 KS 7.

THIRD QUARTER

KS gets the ball first and after an exchange of possessions the Wildcats drive to a chip shot FG attempt but their kicker misses a 22-yd. attempt.  This is the third missed field goal for KS.
It's time for our offense to do something.
We start from the 20 after the missed FG attempt.
A two yard run and Coates drops a pass.  Third and 8.
There's a 12 yard pass to Coates for a first down.
There's a 2 yard gain but then a pass is batted down.  Their defensive linemen are getting their hands up.
There's a first down swing pass to Louis.
Marshall runs to the KS 37.
First down to the 28.
The quarter ends with Auburn facing third and 7 at the KS 24 yard line.  OH, my.

FOURTH QUARTER

This is not the high scoring game that most people expected, but it will go down to the wire.
There's a first down pass to Duke to the 12.
There's TD pass to Duke Williams in the corner of the end zone.
That's a big time throw and catch by Nick and Duke.  That's more like it!

Auburn 17  Kansas State 7

80 yds.  5 and 1/2 minutes.  15 plays.  Three third down conversions.  The Tigers had to earn that score.
We've had to earn our yards all night.
We hold on third and 10 but offsetting penalties gives them another down and they pick up the first down.  That was a questionable holding call on Trovon Reed.
That was the FIRST penalty on KS.  That's something like SIX on us.
There's a big pick by Trovon Reed at the KS 47.  Big time stuff!
There's a fumble but we are lucky to get back on the ball.
There's a first down pass to CAP to the 35.
First down pass to Duke to the 24.
First down to the 11.
We have to settle for the 25 yard field goal.  Okay.
The Wildcats continue to do a good job stopping our run game.

Auburn 20  Kansas State 7

6:28 to go.
The KO goes out of bounds, giving them good field position at the 35.
So far we've given up only 225 yards.
KS moves to the Auburn 32.
First down to the 14.  This will be a nail-biter.
4:32 to go.
This has not been a pretty game.  Let's just hold on if we can.
First and goal from inside the one and on the next play there's the score.

Auburn 20  Kansas State 14

3:49 to go.  What happens now?
This game if far from over.
The KO goes into the end zone.
Can our offense respond again?
We need two or three first downs.
We get one first down and then on a 3rd and 9 Nick Marshall hits Duke Williams on a surprise 42 yard completion and  the game is sealed.
What an amazing call and execution on 3rd and 9.  I would have run the ball wide and taken my chance with that or thrown for the sticks.  What a call to clinch this game!
Championship teams win games like this.
The Tigers are 3 and 0.  Let's go forward.

The Coach on CBS

I look forward to seeing Coach Malzahn on TV for the Georgia-South Carolina game.  This is great publicity for Auburn.

The KState Buildup

The Kansas State buildup will be enormous.  Since the game is not until next week we will have more time to think about it.  We know about their great coach Bill Snyder.  We know their stadium is small but it is supposed to be a difficult place to play.  The place will be sold out and rowdy.  They have a running quarterback which seems to give us trouble.  On the other hand, they had to rally late to beat Iowa State, but maybe ISU is good this year.  Who knows.

After San Jose State

The Tigers are 2 & 0.  You can't get much better than that.  We score 59 points in beating the Spartans.  You can't much better than that either.  It's good to get the first two behind us.  Now we wait until a week from Thursday for a date at Kansas State.  We knew this was coming.  Not it's the next game.  The team still has lots of room for improvement.  Nick Marshall needs to improve his passing.  We said that last year also.  The defense needs to stop to stop giving occasional big plays and be more consistent.  Special teams play has been outstanding.  I wanted to throw this in.  We need to see a better team in Manhattan.

San Jose State 2014

Why is Auburn playing San Jose State of all teams out there to play?  I do not know.  All I know is that this is opponent for game 2 for a 6 p.m. kickoff on ESPN2.  Auburn is a 33 point favorite.  I gather that SJSU is a high-scoring team.  Let's see what happens after the opening win against Arkansas.  We need to win this game the way we should.

FIRST QUARTER

Before the game begins I read that Sammie Coats will not play tonight because of a minor injury.  I hope we won't need him.  Tommy Tuberville is in town honoring the 2004 team.

Auburn receives to the game and downs the ball in the end zone.
Marshall runs free up the middle from midfield but gets stripped of the ball just short of the end zone and SJSU recovers in the back of the end zone for a touchback.
On the first play from scrimmage Auburn recovers a fumble but AU is called for a face mask penalty and the visitors maintain possession.
The Spartans move to the AU 47 and a 4th and 12.  They throw short, quick passes.  Pressure on their quarterback is essential.
After a 14-yd. punt Auburn sets up at their 33.
The Tigers move methodically down the field for the TD.
The score comes on a 4-yd. pass to a wide-open Ricardo Louis on 3rd and goal.
On this drive the Tigers adroitly mix the run and the pass.  11 plays 67 yards.

Auburn 7  San Jose State 0

The Spartans start on their 25 and the kickoff 9 yards deep in the end zone.
First play there is a 75 yard TD pass on a double fake.  The double move left our DB behind.
The visitors respond quickly to say the least.

Auburn 7 San Jose State 7

Well, how about that?  Looks like our defense is starting slow like last week.
Louis returns the KO to the AU 40.
The Tigers move smartly down the field running the football showing a dominating run game.
CAP smashes in from the 2 for the score.

Auburn 14 San Jose State 7

SJS start again on their 25.  Let's not give up another 75 yard TD pass!
The Spartans start a drive moving the ball on the ground.  We have to stop this.
The Spartans have a first down at the AU 45.
On 4th and 1 they get a good spot with no measurement for a first down.  Poor officiating!!!
There is a holding penalty on the Spartans to make up for blowing the previous play.
Refs do such things I guarantee you.
Therezie intercepts!!!
AU is at the Spartan 45.
Two runs by CAP carries the ball to the Spartan 24 as the quarter ends.
The Tigers are running at will.

Auburn 14 San Jose State 7

SECOND QUARTER

Down the field we go.  On 4th and short from the 5 CAP walks into the end zone around the left side.

Auburn 21 San Jose State 7

Our running game appears to be unstoppable.  We have to stop giving up big plays on defense.
Barely into the second quarter we already have 199 rushing yards.
SJSU is three and out with Adams smashing their QB on third down.
Quan Bray runs the punt back 55 yards for the touchdown!  Great run weaving thru traffic.

Auburn 28 San Jose State 7

10:02 to go in the second quarter and the Tigers are rolling.
Three and out and another sack on third down.
The punt goes out of bounds at the AU 45 or 46.
Our defense is now flexing its muscle.
Again the offense moves right down the field.
56 yards.  48 seconds.  CAP runs 31 yards to the one and then powers in on the next play.
Our offense makes it look easy.  CAP is running like a wild man.

Auburn 35 San Jose State 7

There is a runback on the KO for a change to the 33.
There's a first down to the Spartan 45.
All of a sudden SJSU is driving into Auburn territory.
First down at the Auburn 13.
Our defense stiffens but we give up the short FG.

Auburn 35 San Jose State 10

Our offense still has plenty of time to score again.
AU starts on the 29.
AU is three and out and punting with 1:58 to go.
The punt is fair-caught at the SJSU 28.
On third and 18 Rudy Ford intercepts at the AU 49.
53 seconds left.
On the last play of the half Carlson kicks a 27-yd. field goal.  We get their last 3 points back.
I hope we have this game in hand.

Auburn 38 San Jose State 10

THIRD QUARTER

The Spartans receive and drive to the Auburn 5.  There is a loss back to the 12 and then they miss the short FG.  Our defense holds but we let them get to our 5.  There was a long pass completion on a post route that was the big play for the visitors.
After one first down the Tigers are punting.  Our offense is sluggish.
The punt is fair caught around the Spartans 24.
There's a pass out to the Spartan 44.  I don't like the way this half is unfolding.
The Spartans are moving the football again.
There is a face mask penalty and the visitors are at our 30.
I don't like the way this half is unfolding.
Their QB runs up to the middle to the 12.
I don't like the way this half is unfolding.
Our defense does stiffen but we give up the 24-yd. FG.

Auburn 38 San Jose State 13

Our offense needs to pick it up.
This is not the second half that we desired.
After a pooch KO we start on our 33.
The Tigers move to a first down to the SJSU 27 and then Marshall runs it up the middle to the house.
The Tiger offense gets it going.

Auburn 45 San Jose State 13

OK, we are going to win this game but let's look good doing it the rest of the way.
The quarter ends with SJSU facing 3rd and 23 around their 10.

Auburn 45 San Jose State 13

FOURTH QUARTER

The Spartans are 3 and out.
The punt goes out of bounds at their 37.
Jeremy Johnson and Peyton Barber are in the game.
First down to the 18 JJ throwing.
First down to the 4 JJ passing to Melvin Ray.
JJ around the right end for the score.  Looked easy.

Auburn 52 San Jose State 13

I hope we keep scoring.  Gotta get some style points.  Ha, ha.
The Spartans are 3 after a 3rd and 19 incomplete pass.
Their punter drops the snap.  AU has the ball on the 3.
On his first snap of his Auburn career Roc Thomas carries around right end for the score!
What a perfect place to give the highly touted freshman his first Auburn carry.
Touchdown Auburn!

Auburn 59 San Jose State 13

It doesn't get any easier than that.  Recover a fumbled punt snap on the three!
The Spartans drive into AU territory but Trovon Reed intercepts at the goal line and out to the 6.
Wallace is in at QB with Roc Thomas.
Roc Thomas gets carry after carry looking very good with a spin move about 8 carries in a row but then he fumbles with 41 seconds left and SJSU recovers at the Auburn 46.
The Spartans run twice and the game ends.

FINAL SCORE

Auburn 59 San Jose State 13

Overall a dominating performance by Auburn with some hiccups here and there.
It seems that our defense will always give up yards doing the old bend but don't break routine.
It is what it is.
