A-Day

Orange (First Team) 28  Blue (Second Team) 10

The biggest takeaway is to see the offense strongly back to playing fast.  It looks like we have the quarterbacks to go fast and especially with Malzahn calling the plays.

Good to see 4 quarterbacks.  I suppose it's between Gatewood and Nix.  I like Bo Nix.  He has an assertive and confident vibe about him.

Seth Williams and Matthew Hill will be fun to watch.  Harold Joiner is going to do good things.

This was one of the better A-Day scrimmages.

My View

Lisening to the Auburn radio broadcast I was not fully aware of the double dribble, obvious in replay, after the game.  Our announcers, Bramblett and Coach Smith, did not make a big deal of it.  They were focused, Rod Bramblett in particular, on the last play.

Rod was all but shouting, "I can't believe this!  There was no foul.  Auburn is being robbed.  That call  at this point of the game with less than a second remaining, should never have been made."  Sonny agreed.

Auburn was robbed.  Technically it was probably a foul, but at that point in the game with less than a second remaining, the official should not have blown his whistle.

I am still bitter about it.  Great season sure, but Auburn should be playing for the national championship tonight.

My takeaways

My takeways from Auburn's heartbreaking 63-62 loss to Virginia yesterday.

1.  Immediately after the game, I had no problem with the foul call on the three-point shot.  Technically, according to the rule book, it is a foul.  Plenty of people have said it is a foul.  However, as I think about it more, I disagree with the foul call more than I did yesterday.  The reason: The players should decide the game, especially a game of such importance, not the referees.  To call a foul that is arguably ticky-tacky in that situation is highly questionable.  Especially when the referees hadn't called many fouls all game.  I think that neither team reached the bonus in the first half and that Virginia wasn't in the bonus until less than a minute left in the game.  As the New York Post put it,  "was the right call... at the wrong moment."
2.  My biggest problem with the referees, more than the foul call on the three-pointer, was not calling the double dribble right before that.  It was an obvious double dribble, which if called would have given Auburn the ball with less than three seconds left.
3.  Auburn was 9 for 31 from three for 29%.  That hurt us.
4.  Before that last three point attempt, Jared Harper was 1 for 2 from the foul line.  If he makes both, the game goes to overtime.
5.  Auburn showed that it belongs on the national stage with the elites.  All season, this team was doubted and disrespected.  Hopefully, our tournament run changed that.  With the controversial end, people know that Auburn should have won and should be playing for a national title tomorrow.  Can Auburn make a run again next year?  It depends on whether Jared, Austin, and Chuma return.  It depends on how the five newcomers gel with the returning players.  More importantly, Pearl is building a program that should have continued success.

The NCAA Semi-Finals: Auburn vs. Virginia

Our basketball team has progressed to where no Auburn basketball team has progressed before: to the national semi-finals in Minneapolis with a scheduled 5:09 tipoff on CBS.  Virginia is a 5 or 6 point favorite.  Almost every "expert" is picking Virginia just like they did for Kansas, North Carolina, and Kentucky.  All I know is that the Cavs are supposed to play great defense and they like to play a half-court game whereas Auburn likes to run.  We have the prospect of contrasting styles.  The game is being played in a football stadium.

The "Experts" Are Picking Virginia

The same experts also picked Kansas, North Carolina, and Kentucky.  Predictions can be fun, but they are meaningless this time around.

Three Days Away

We are three days away from the biggest game in Auburn basketball history.  Win or lose, this has been the memorable Auburn basketball season ever.  I can't wait!

And then there were four. The Virginia Cavaliers, Michigan State Spartans, Texas Tech Red Raiders and Auburn Tigers are the sole survivors of the 2019 NCAA men’s basketball tournament. According to our predictions, their chances of winning the championship in a week’s time are 41 percent, 28 percent, 22 percent and 10 percent, respectively. [FiveThirtyEight]
