The LSU Game

Strange things have happened in the history of this series.  Auburn needs some strangeness to win this game at Jordan-Hare.  The game kicks off at 6:08  on ESPN.  LSU is a big favorite.

FIRST QUARTER

Auburn receives and goes 3 and out.  Frazier hits a streaking Coates down the left sideline but he can't haul the ball in.  Would have been a touchdown.
LSU marches from their 46 and tghe  Fighting Tigers fumble at the goal line!
But Mason is brought down in the end zone for a safety.

Auburn 0  LSU 2

Another 3 and out for Auburn.  From their 41 LSU marches for the touchdown.

Auburn 0  LSU 9

Auburn punts again but the LSU QB is stripped of the football.  Another LSU fumble!  Auburn recovers.
Auburn on the LSU 26.
But McCalebb loses 4.  No blocking.
Mason sweeps left to inside the one yard line!
McCalebb bounces off a tackler and hits the left corner of the end zone.
At the end of the first quarter Auburn takes advantage of the turnover.
Touchdown Auburn!!!
The point after ends the first quarter.

Auburn 7  LSU 9

SECOND QUARTER

LSU starts on their 20 after the touchback.
I do see some good gang tackling tonight so far even though it is obvious that LSU is the better team.
LSU surprisingly punts on 4th and less than the football to go into the end zone.
AU on their 20.
A pass to Lutz and AU is on the LSU 49.
Jonathan Wallace is in at QB!
But after a procedure penalty Frazier comes back in.  Wallace doesn't get to run a play.
Big loss back to the AU 39.  The offense is going backwards.
Auburn is punting from the AU 42.
After a good pass our offense shoots itself in the foot.
After the punt and a penalty LSU is backed up on their 5 or 6.
Facemask penalty on AU away from the ball  gives LSU a first down rather than a 3rd and 8.  Yikes!
A tough penalty on Auburn.
On 3rd and 2 we stop them!
Bray faircatches on the AU 35.
AFter a 9-yd pass Wallace is back in and runs for the first down.
There is a strike to Blake!
Auburn is on the LSU 29.
But the 23 is as far as we can go.
The 40-yr.  FG is good!!!  With 1:21 or so to go Auburn takes the lead in this football game.

Auburn 10  LSU 9

After the touchback LSU is on their 25.
There is a 30 yard run up the middle.  How can we let this happen?
Big sack on the quarterback with only 4 rushers.  Timeout LSU with 53 seconds left in the half.
3rd and 10 just inside the AU 45 with 41 seconds left.
Incompletion.
4th and 10 with 34 seconds to go.
Fair catch on the 10 with seconds to go.
Frazier takes a knee and Auburn leads LSU at the half
A half does not a game make, but at least for a half against the #2 team in the country we seen definite improvement in this team.  The defense is certainly improved.  The offense has made some plays but is still inconsistent.  Frazier certainly looks better.  Our pass rush is pretty good.  LSU runs a conventional offense.  They are bigger and more experienced than our defense but they are conventional.  LSU plays power football with play action.  Our guys are standing in there.  Let us hope we can hold up in the second half.  We may lose this game but we have to be pleased with the first half.

Auburn 10  LSU 9

THIRD QUARTER

LSU on their 25.
On 3rd and 8 we jump offsides.  Yikes!
We stuff the run.
The punt is controversial.  The refs say the ball hit our guy first on the ground,  but the replay shows it hit the LSU player first.  Hold your breath.  Strange things happen in this series.  The call on the field is overturned.  The officials get it right. It's Auburn football.
AU on the 16.
First down pass to Blake.
McCalebb loses 7 and a personal foul on Auburn.
We are going backwards.
AU on the 10.
3rd down from the 8.  An offisides on LSU is not called.
Auburn is punting.  After a first down pass to Blake Auburn is punting for their end zone.
After a booming punt and two penalities on LSU the visitors are back to their 12 yard line.  What a field position change! A 79-yd. revesal.
These teams are physically going at it.
These teams do not like each other.
3 straight incompletions.  LSU is three and out.
BRAY FUMBLES THE PUNT.  How tragic.  Our defense forces a great 3 and out and Bray has the ball go right thru his hands.
OK.  We are at a critical point in the game.
LSU starts on the AU 48.
Oh, my.  OH, MY.
A holding penalty moves the ball back to the LSU 49.
There is a pass to the Auburn 22.
There is a run to the 14.  LSU can certainly power run.
3rd and 2 from the 14.
4th and 1.
The field is good.  LSU regains the lead.

Auburn 10  LSU 12

Bray's muff on the punt results in LSU getting the lead back.  At least it was only a field goal.
McCalebb runs it back to the AU 44.  That was ALMOST a touchdown run.
Frazier is dropped for a 5 yard loss.  Slow moving plays will not work on this defense.
McCalebb runs for 9 leading to a 3rd and 6.
Frazier floats an interception.  Come on Kiehl.  You can't have this.
After a penalty on LSU the Fighting Tigers start on their 29.  You just cannot have 2 turnovers like we've had in this period.  That was an ill-advised pass by Frazier.
Procedure on LSU.  First and 15 from the 24.
LSU is 3 and out.
Bray faircatches at the 18.  At some point in time our offense has to move the chains.
Auburn mounts a drive.
AU is at the LSU 39 as the quarter ends.

Auburn 10  LSU 12

FOURTH QUARTER

OKAY.  Here we go.  Can the offense sustain a drive?  We have the momentum of a drive starting the fourth quarter.
McCalebb is open on the wheel route but Frazier overthrows.  Oh, my.
Auburn has to punt.  We cannot sustain the drive.
The ball rolls dead on the LSU 8.  At least we back them up.  Our offense just cannot sustain drives.
LSU is 3 and out with 13:09 to go.
After a good punt AU starts on their 27.
On a 4th and 1 AU punts.
LSU at their 20 with 12:50 to go.  The game is still very much in doubt.  Our defense has to hang in there to keep the offense chances.  A turnover would be nice.  Sooner or later the offense will have to respond.
There is an 8-yd. gain on first down.  We must stop them.  LSU will power run now.
There is a first down.  There is another first down on 3rd and 8.  That hurt.  Good play by their QB to hang in there to get the pass off.
This time we hold them at midfield.
After a bad punt AU starts at their 30 with 8:04 to go.
Wallace runs twice up the middle for the first down.
There was no pass protection and Frazier loses 6.  Oh, my.
From midfield we are 4th down at midfield.  Our defense has to hold one more time.  Our offense may hopefully have one more chance.
LSU gets a good bounce on the punt and starts on the 28.  That was a bad punt.
The defense must get one more stop if we are to win this football game.
The clock moves under 4 minutes.  LSU is using the clock.
3rd and 4 and a must stop for Auburn.
But there's a long pass completion unexpected and LSU is in business at the AU 34.
Jonathan Evans overuns the receiver to allow the big first down.
There is a run to the 23.  Looks like our defense is tired.
LSU at the 20.
With 29 seconds left to go LSU misses the field goal.  We have a slim hope with no time outs from the 20.
Auburn has a shot but can only advance to their 37.  Blake was open on one pass which may have given us a chance to try the game winning field goal but Frazier makes a bad pass.
One and three is not acceptable but Auburn was just as good as LSU tonight.
This team makes advances but still we lose.  If this team keeps improving we still have a chance to have a good team by the end of the year.  This team is close tonight to being a decent team.

Here Comes LSU

It's LSU time again.  What a series this has been.  We've won some; we've lost some.  It's always a tough game no matter what.

LSU is 3 and 0 and ranked #2 in the nation.  Auburn is one 1 and 2.  We had to go to overtime last week to beat lightly regard ULM.  LSU is supposed to be great with top atheltes at every position.  The line is about 17.  No one in their mind expect Auburn to win.

What do we have to lose?  Well, we could lose bigger than the line.  We could look bad in losing big.  This is a scary looking season so far for the Tigers.  An upset Saturday night would be wonderful, but it's hard to see it happening.

The La. Monroe Game

Auburn is in the uncomrtable position of facing a must-win game against Monroe after a disappointing 0 & 2 start.  Will the Tigers make a start in the right direction or will this be the first Auburn team since 1950 to start 0 and 3?   LSU is next, and that would make for 0 & 4 if we lose today.   I would feel better if I had not seen ULM beat Arkansas last Saturday night.  ULM features a short passing game that Auburn has shown itself unable to defend in recent years.  Why should today be any different?  Add to that our anemic offense and you can why I am pessemistic.  If we win, we will have to outscore these guys, and wish us good luck with that with a QB who can't pass.  At least we are at home: the first home game of the year.  AU is a 17-point favorite.  That's hard to figure.

FIRST QUARTER

My worst fears show right off the bat.  ULM gets the ball first and the Warhawks drive right down the field with short passes and running the  ball which is deadly for our defense.  They are helped by a ridiculous interference call against Mincy at the goal line but still they move the ball with ease.  On 4th and goal at the 2 they have a open receiver in the end zone over Bates, who bit on the play fake.  This was too easy.  Just like I feared it would be.  12 plays 89 yards.  Not the start we had hoped for.  Our defense looks defenseless.  Three or four missed tackles says Q Riggins.

Auburn 0  ULM 7

Oh, my.  How bad will this be.  I feared we couldn't stop their offense and on their first possession it is obviously true.
AU starts at the 24.
No run blocking on the first carry by McCalebb.
At least one first down so far.
A 33 yd. completion to Mason.
A 28 yd. run by McCalebb for the score.
That didn't take long.  5 plays.  76 yards.

Auburn 7  ULM 7

Still we will have to outscore these people to win this game.  Can we do it?
Starting on their 15 ULM moves the ball again.
After one first down ULM is punting.
Auburn will put the ball in play on the AU 19.
A long TD pass to Coates is called back on a procedure penalty.
The Tigers have to punt at midfield.
A poor punt and ULM starts at their 22.
The quarter ends as ULM picks up a first down.

Auburn 7  ULM 7

SECOND QUARTER

ULM to punt and Bray fair-catches at the AU 12.
On 4th and a foot we punt.
ULM on the 28 where the ball rolls dead.
After one first down ULM punts.
Come on, offense!  The Tigers at their 30.
After one first down we are punting.  The offense cannot sustain a drive.  We are going to lose this game if our offense can't pick it up.
The Warhawks start on their 20.
The visitors drive for the touchdown on a long run by their QB up the midfield as Jake Holland gets faked out.  Holland is terrible.  There was a long pass where Bell lost the receiver.  We have defensive lapses.  Two defensive poor plays cost us a touchdown.

Auburn 7  ULM  14

As I just said, if our offense doesn't get going we will lose this game easily.
Starting from the 25 AU tries to drive.
We score the TD on a razzle dazzle lateral to Bray and then a pass to Frazier who walks into the end zone from about the 35.

Auburn 14  ULM 14

ULM is backed up at their 7 to start with.
We hold as the clock winds down.
The punt rolls dead on the AU 38 with seconds remaining.
Frazier is out of bounds at the 34 with 14 seconds left.  Frazier took too much time.
On the last play of the quarter Frazier eludes the rush long enough to hit a leaping Coates in the end zone.  What a play!    The Hail Mary works.  Give Frazier lots of credit for escaping the rush and making a perfect throw allowing Coates to leap straight up behind the defenders to come down with the football.

Auburn 21  ULM 14

THIRD QUARTER

The second half begins with AU receiving after that bracing touchdown at the end of the first half.
After a pooch kick AU begins on the 35 and we drive the ball down their throats.  Except for one completion to Blake, McCalebb and Mason do the heavy running.  Mason runs it in from the one.  That was just what we needed coming out in the second half.  That was a dominant drive.  That might have been our most impressive drive of the year so far.  AU has scored 21 straight point.   But Arkansas led ULM 28 to 7 last Saturday night.

Auburn 28  ULM 14

The Warhawks start on their 25.
ULM fakes the punt and gets a first down out to the 46.  Our punt receiving team gets fooled.
That we didn't need.  We force a 4th down but our kick receive team lets it get away.
Come on defense!  ULM will go for it from here on out.
ULM drives to the AU 21.  After forcing a punting situation our defense yields.
ULM at the 15.
3rd and 8 at the 13.
There's a 2-yd loss.
The FG attempt is blocked.
After getting fooled on the punt attempt and giving up some yards we block the FG attempt.
AU on the 21.
There is 43-yd run by McCalebb.
AU on the Warhawk 33.
Blakely for 12.
Blakely makes a great run  but fumbles and ULM recovers at the 4.  Oh, my.
That's hard to believe.  Blakely running so well but near the sideline he's carrying the ball in his left hand subject to a big hit by the defenders.  We can't have this.  We cannot have this.  This is the kind of thing that can get Monroe back in the game.  This is a huge red zone turnover.
ULM pushes out of the shadow of their end zone.  I'm telling you that turnover could end up killing us.  They start inside of their 5 and away ULM goes.
ULM crosses midfield.
The quarter ends.  The 4th quarter will be hairy.

Auburn 28  ULM 14

FOURTH QUARTER

ULM is 4th and 14 and will punt around midfield.
Bray fields the ball on the 7 and almost loses it.  Okay.  Our time to move the ball out from our end zone.
We are 3 and out have to punt from the 15.  We run three times between the tackles and it doesn't work.
This is not good.
ULM starts on their 40.  This game is very much in doubt.  Monroe is one TD away from making this a game.
Our defense is back on the field.
I am scared.
11:55 to go.
Monroe moves the ball with the short passes.  Is our defense tiring?
ULM is 4th down and 10 on our 39.
Their QB is sacked!
The Tigers take over on the AU 44.
On 4th and 1 Mason just barely makes the first down.
Auburn on the 45 of ULM.
But that's an interception as Frazier throws the ball right to the defender.  Bad throw.  Good throw to Stallworth and it might have been a score.  Oh, my. This will not be easy.  Nothing comes easy for this football team so far this year.
After the turnover Monroe starts at their 41.
8:39 remaining.
This a frightening game.
On 4th and 7 from the 18 ULM completes the pass to the AU 4.  Oh, my.
This is not good with 6:28 to go.
First and goal from the 4.
Second and goal from the 4.
Touchdown.  OH, MY.
The score tightens with 6:15 left.

Auburn 28  ULM  21

We will lose this game unless we score again because ULM will score again.
We have kept them in the game with 2 crucial turnovers in this second half.  ULM takes advantage of a fumble at the 4 and the Frazier interception in Warhawk territory.
Since our opening drive of the half we have not been able to sustain anything offensively.
Will ULM onside kick?
AU starts on the 25.  This is our biggest offensive possession of the year.
Blakely loses one as our line gets no push.
Frazier rolls out and loses 4.  Our offensive is going backwards.  What is going on out there?
We are 3 and out.  The offense is totally ugly.  We go backwards.  Not good offense.  We punt from the 23.  It will take a miracle for us to hold on.  If their score they'll go for 2 for sure.
I can't believe our offense.  There was nothing on that last possession.
Our defense has to step up one more time.  We have 19 yards of offense in the 4th quarter.
ULM starts on their 35 with 4:37 left.  It all comes down to this possession.
ULM is moving fast.
4th and 2 with 3:50 to go.
The pass is incomplete but we are offside as Lemonier jumps.
Pass interference and our defense is melting down.
First down on the AU 37.
3:17 to go.
We have to apply pressure to win this game.
Our defensive backs are playing too far off.
First down at the AU 24.
Complete pass at the sidelines to the 7.  Close but great throw and catch.  The play is reviewed but holds up.
1:57 to go.  Turnovers by the offense puts us in this position.
Auburn is in a fight for its life.
2nd and goal from the 6.
TD pass.  OH, MY.
The point after is good and we are tied at 28 with 1:18 to go.  It's a wonder they didn't go for two.

Auburn 28  ULM  28

What is going to happen?  Our offense has died in the fourth quarter.  Our defense has yielded.  This doesn't feel good.  Not at all.
We have two timeouts remaining.
This is a sad state of affairs.  It's hard to believe that our offense can do anything.  We will likely lose now in overtime.  Certainly we cannot turn the ball over.
From the 25 Mason gains 12.
A run by Mason to the 42 and an Auburn timeout.
Let's take care of the ball.  No turnover please!
3rd and 5 from the 42.
4th and 5 from the 42.
37 seconds left.
Frazier looks lost like last week.
All we can do now is hope for overtime.
We had a 28 to 14 lead and we were on our way to making it 35 to 14 when Blakely fumbled at the ULM 4.
After the punt ULM has 28 seconds left from their 15.
We go to overtime.  OH, MY.
This is ugly.  Even if by some miracle we win this game it's ugly.  Turnovers have done us in.  Also some bad penalities.  We cannot overcome the adversity.

Auburn 28  ULM  28

OVERTIME

ULM is a good team but this should not be happening.
ULM is on offense first.
There's a rush for 5 yards.
Incompletion.
Incompletion.
4th and 5.
What will they do?
The field goal attempt is no good!
We have a chance here.  Come on guys!
Blakely runs for the first down to the 15.
We take a knee at the 15.
Here is the ballgame.
Parkey makes the field goal.  Auburn wins.
We go ahead and make the kick to end it.
It was ugly but we pull it out.

FINAL SCORE

Auburn 31  ULM 28

ULM Comes to Town

The last time Auburn was 0 & 2 was 2003.  I remember starting 0 & 2 in 1984.  I suppose those seasons ended up OK.  I have no such hopes so far for this season.

It's one thing to be  0 & 2.  It's another thing to look so bad in losing our first two games.  I'd feel better if we had a good QB.  So far Kiehl Frazier looks like he literally cannot pass the football.  Apparently they are afraid to play Mosely at least so far.  I read this morning that Wallace is more of a runner than a passer.  Frazier better improve quickly.  This is the best thing that could happen to this football team.

I am stunned that Auburn is a 17-point favorite.  I saw Monroe beat Arkansas.  They have a passing offense.  I can't see how we stop them from scoring 30 plus points.  We will have to outscore them, and I don't see this happening.

I will be further stunned if we look any better Saturday than we looked in the first two games.  The tone that is set early in the season seems to usually carry the rest of the season.  I sure hope I am wrong.

A Reflection

Auburn is headed for a losing season.  This team is not going to make a dramatic improvement to turn things around.  At this moment I just hope we beat Monroe.  Chizik will be on the proverbial hot seat next year; at least he should be.

The Mississippi State Game

This has become a real rivalry with the arrival of Dan Mullen at State and what happened with Cam Newton's recruitment.  We sure need to win this game in Starkville. State is a 3-point favorite.  We lost to Clemson last week while State beat outmanned Jackson State.  Kickoff is at 11 on ESPN.

FIRST QUARTER

State marches right down the field throwing and running with ease from their 25,  Our defense is lifeless,  I don't understand it.
State misses a 36-yd.  FG.  after we finally get pressure on third down.
After a penalty aided first down Auburn punts.
State on their 24.
State is 3 and out.
AU on their 22.
AU is 3 and out.  Our offense is non-existent.
State starts on their 35.
State is 3 and out.  Neither offense is doing anything now.
AU again on the 22.
First down on the 39.
First down penalty on Auburn.
Our offense goes backwards quickly.  Our offense id completely discombobulated.
This is a field position game at the moment and we are losing.
We punt from the 22.
State on their 31.
State fumbles and AU recovers on the 39.
Blakey is running well.  AU is first and 10 on the MSU 28 as the quarter ends.

Auburn 0. MSU.0

SECOND Q UARTER

In this quarter Frazier throws 2 interceptions.  Frazier positively cannot throw the ball.
AU drives into the red zone and once again is pushed back from a 2nd and goal from the 5 when McCalebb is buried on the speed sweep.  Why did we run that play on the 5 when we were having success running inside?  We have to settle for the short FG, which may cost us the game before it's over.  Parkey has yet to miss this year.

Auburn 3  MSU 0

MSU gets a touchdown pass to a wide-open tight end down the middle as Jake Holland cannot keep up  and Whitehead is not to be found.

Auburn 3  MSU 7

So the first half ends with our defense playing pretty well but our offense is inconsistent. State is 0 for 5 on third down.  Frazier cannot pass the ball.  He looks totally uncomfortable throwing the ball.  We've had some success running the ball but we can't be one dimensional.  This game is not as bad as 2008 but still our offense is pretty bad overall because of Frazier's limitations.  Our offense has to improve dramatically in short order or we will lose this game.  At the half I would say that State will win and probably pull away in the 4th as our offense gets desperate and continues to turn the ball over.  If we do win this game, it will be a very ugly win just like 2008.

THIRD QUARTER

Auburn receives to start the second half.
MCCALEBB RUNS THE KICKOFF BACK 101 YARDS FOR THE TOUCHDOWN!

Auburn 10  MSU 7

MSU on the 25.
First down pass to the 45 to a wide-open receiver.
State drives with open receivers.  Just like last year we can't cover the short passes.
The score comes on a 13-yr. corner route in the end zone.

Auburn 10  MSU 14

Well, State marches right down the field.  Our defense looks like it did on their first possession of the game.  Nothing there.  They have wide-open receivers in the middle of the field every play.
Our offense has yet to see the field and our defense gives up a 75 yard drive that looks easy.  State makes adjustments against our defense.
It could be all downhill for State after this.
AU on the 20.  McCalebb can't break it this time.
We quickly go backwards.  This offense is totally out of whack.
Auburn punts from the 20.
This game is over.
MSU on their 42.
One more TD and this game is over.
It will take a miracle for us to win this game.  MSU is not very good but at this point they are better than Auburn.  Will this team quit or will they show some character?
Perhaps Kiehl Frazier can't run this type of offense.  He has no confidence.
MSU makes a 4th and 1 from midfield.  We can't stop them.
First down at the 15.  Their QB is playing with the confidence that Frazier needs.
MSU has all the momentum with their offense ramming the ball down our throats.
The touchdown comes on a 3-yd. toss to a wide-open tight end in the corner of the end zone and with 4:28 to go in the third quarter State is in complete control.  No one covers the tight end coming off the line of scrimmage.  Our offense is MIA and our defense looks helpless.
10 plays.  58 yards.  Looking easy.

Auburn 10  MSU 21

McCalebb can't get beyond the 18.
After a first down to the 37 Frazier carries twice and we come up short on 3rd and 6 and once again we are punting as Frazier can't throw the ball downfield.
MSU on the 25 with 2:06 to go.  The Bulldogs are in complete control of this game.
This game is hopeless.   As Pat Dye once said, there are no miracles on the football field.
State is 3 and out for the first time in the half.
Auburn gets the ball back with 29 seconds to go in the quarter.  We have not been past midfield in the half so far.
AU on the 23.
Blakely for 3 but there is a clipping foul on Auburn on a tough call against Sullen. We are going backwards again.  The quarter ends with the situation looking hopeless.

Auburn 10  MSU 21

FOURTH QUARTER

Here we go.  Fifteen minutes to go with Auburn facing a huge mountain to climb with no apparent hope in sight.
Once again Frazier can't throw and we are 3 and out.  It is obvious now that the coaches won't even let Frazier attempt to throw the ball downfield.
Auburn punts early in the fourth quarter and everybody knows this game is over.  Our offense is as bad as 2008.  Something has to give.  If we can't get a turnover this will go from bad to worse.  The thing is that State is not very good; it's just that Auburn is very bad.
State on their 38.
State right down the field for the touchdown.  Our defense has given up.  State is clearly the superior team.  They have completely dominated the second half.  Auburn looks pathetic.  This team has given up.

Auburn  10  MSU 28

This is very sad.  How low has Auburn sunk?
12:33 to go.  State has made the adjustments and they have dominated the line of scrimmage.  Frazier is not stepping into his throws and if his first receiver is not open he has nowhere to go.
Frazier does step into one throw on a long pass completion to Blake.
First down on the 13 but once again the offense stalls.
On third down Frazier makes a poor decision and throws the ball right to a defender trying to hit Blake with 3 State defenders in front of Blake.  We are not going to win with Kiehl Frazier at quarterback.  He is not an SEC quarterback in this this offense.
Our good drive is quashed by a poor throw into the end zone by Frazier.  This is truly embarassing for Auburn fans.
If Frazier can't hit Blake he can't complete a pass.  He can't complete a pass anyway.
State on their 31 after the interception.
Their QB Tyler Russell looks great against our defense.
We hold and take the ball on the 25 or so.
Frazier completes a few passes but then he fumbles running the fooball.  That's four turnovers by Auburn.  This is as bad a day as I've ever seen an Auburn QB have.
State gets the ball back after the Frazier fumble.
This is a disappointing performace by Auburn.  Last week we folded in the second half with Clemson and the same thing happens this week.  Our offene doesn't score a single touchdown.  The offense has regressed.  We did see some hope last week despite the loss but today I see no hope.
We get the ball back with a 1:19 left on our 23 or so.  Not that it matters.
We are out to midfield with 52 seconds left.
From the State 29 Kiehl Frazier fumbles again back to pass.  That's 5 turnovers.  Frazier has the worse day of an QB that I can remember.  Finally it's over

Auburn 10  MSU 28

That's a real whipping.

Welcome to Mississippi State, Gene Chizik's biggest game without Cam Newton

An excerpt from the Kevin Scarbinsky article.  He is right about Mississippi State.  You simply do not lose to them.  They are just a bump on road to better things.
This one’s big. Real big. As big as the second game of the season and the conference opener gets when you’re not projected to compete for the state, league or national titles. As Gene Stallings might say, if you don’t think this game is big, go ahead and lose it and see what happens... Auburn’s loss won’t sting as much if it beats State, and State’s win won’t mean a thing if it loses again to Auburn.  If Mullen falls to 0-4 against Chizik, it’ll be one more reminder that the Mississippi State coach hasn’t beaten anyone in the SEC West except woeful Ole Miss. That’ll be a good thing for Chizik, but if you’re Auburn, State isn’t a measuring stick. It’s a minimum yearly requirement. You beat State on what you hope is the way to bigger and better things.  You lose to State and, well, you don’t lose to State. Not without some explaining to do... If they can’t beat Mississippi State, who are they going to beat?
