Outback Bowl

Okay, it's Minnesota in the Outback Bowl on January 1.  The Outback is okay, but I am not excited about playing Minnesota.  How do you get excited about playing the "Gophers?"

Malzahn Outfoxes Saban by Brandon Marcello

Malzahn also watched his seed sprout into a giant Auburn oak with 1:06 remaining in the game. Auburn faced a crucial fourth-and-4, and the idea of punting to Jaylen Waddle, who already scored on a 98-yard kickoff return, seemed like a nightmare scenario.
So, the coach did something rather ingenious. Malzahn placed Nix in the Shotgun next to Whitlow in what appeared to be a punt formation, complete with an offensive line fanning toward the sidelines. The only tweak was the personnel: punter Arryn Siposs was lined up at "X" receiver on the left side of the formation.
Was Auburn faking a punt formation? Was Nix going to pooch kick the ball for a second time in the game? Was it a trick play for Nix to throw the ball down field to one of his two receivers at the top of the formation?
Alabama couldn't figure it out. The Tide placed their punt return team on the field, including Waddle at returner, when they saw Siposs run onto the field. Then, with about 15 seconds remaining in the play clock and Siposs remaining at receiver, they exchanged the punt-return unit with the defense.
But there was a problem: Waddle was still on the field as the returner. Alabama was flagged for 12 men on the field, Auburn was rewarded a first down and the game was effectively over. Alabama's Saban was angry. He called the play "unfair" after the game.
Turns out, the play is perfectly fair and lined out in the NCAA and SEC rulebook.
Malzahn not only got the best of Saban on the punt formation, but he also added a slight tweak to the Wildcat to score a touchdown. Both moves were crucial and won the game for the Tigers.
And you can thank Malzahn for planting questions in the head of Alabama's coaching staff throughout the season on game film and Saturday night on the field.

Auburn Crushes Alabama's CFP Hopes in an Iron Bowl for the Ages

What's the only thing twice as ridiculous as an Iron Bowl ending on a kick-six?
How about one in which the deciding moment was Alabama having 12 men on the field?
It was an all-timer of a roller-coaster ride that led to No. 15 Auburn's 48-45 victory over No. 5 Alabama on Saturday. There were nine lead changes, two defensive touchdowns, one incredibly reliable kicker, one less so and a whole lot of Jaylen Waddle, but the end result was that we can eliminate Alabama from the College Football Playoff discussion for the first time since the tournament's inception in 2014.
Finishing in the Top Four was a long shot in the first place. Regardless of what happens in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game, the Crimson Tide (10-2) were probably going to get leapfrogged by a 12-1 Utah and/or a one-loss Big 12 champion. Two-loss Wisconsin also might have jumped ahead of Alabama if it exacted revenge on Ohio State in the Big Ten championship.
Thus, even with a win over the Tigers (9-3), the Crimson Tide might have ended up at No. 8 in the final CFP rankings.
Still, No. 4 was feasible, and much stranger things have happened in this sport. To borrow a poker term, at least Alabama had a chip and a chair to start the day. Maybe Clemson would lose in the ACC championship. Perhaps Utah would lose in the Pac-12 title game. And if Oklahoma lost in Bedlam before defeating Baylor in the Big 12 championship, voila, you've got Alabama in the Top Four.
But we'll never know, because despite four Waddle touchdowns, the Crimson Tide were sent to the rail after they were forced to go all-in with Mac Jones.
Mac Jones and Nick Saban
Mac Jones and Nick SabanButch Dill/Associated Press
Tua Tagovailoa's replacement was solid against an excellent defense. Jones was 14-of-19 for 138 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in the first half. He had a similar line of 12-of-20 for 197 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in the second half. And let's not forget that 18-yard scramble he had on 4th-and-7 on Alabama's final possession.
Aside from Tagovailoa in last year's Iron Bowl, Jones became the first quarterback to throw for four touchdowns against Auburn since 2014. He also tied Texas A&M's Kellen Mond for the most yards (335) thrown against Auburn this season or last.
Not too shabby for a largely unknown commodity making his first start against a bowl-bound opponent.
But those two interceptions were absolute backbreakers.
Not only did Auburn take both of them to the house, but the second one came on 1st-and-goal from the 2, effectively marking a 14-point swing in what was a one-point game.
Why was Jones even put in that particular situation, though?
In a head-scratcher on par with the Seattle Seahawks throwing from the 1 at the end of Super Bowl XLIX, it was absurd that Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian dialed up a pass play. If you still have Tagovailoa, fine, ride or die with your Heisman Trophy candidate. But Najee Harris rushed for nearly 100 yards in the first half and would have punched it in if given three or four tries. He would have hurdled the entire defense if necessary.
Instead of just handing Harris the ball, though, Jones threw a pass behind his unsuspecting back. It ricocheted to Zakoby McClain, who took it 100 yards in the opposite direction.
The first pick-six was all on Jones, though. No fluky bounce or questionable decision on that one. He simply sailed a third-down pass well over Jerry Jeudy's head and right into the breadbasket of Smoke Monday.
Despite throwing those two touchdowns to Tigers defenders, Jones kept his composure and kept the Crimson Tide in the game, marching them down the field in the final eight minutes to set up what should have been the game-tying 30-yard field goal.
However, Alabama's decadelong history of missing chip shots at the most inopportune times reared its ugly head with a doink that definitely knocked it out of the playoff picture and may even knock it out of the New Year's Six bowls altogether.
Alabama kicker Joseph Bulovas
Alabama kicker Joseph BulovasVasha Hunt/Associated Press
Keep in mind, with a Group of Five team destined for the Cotton Bowl and—assuming Clemson reaches the playoff—some undeserving, possibly unranked ACC team headed to the Orange Bowl, there will be only 10 other spots available for those six best bowls.
The selection committee probably won't penalize the Crimson Tide thatharshly for losing a back-and-forth road game against its No. 15 team, but it's feasible it could drop Alabama to No. 11 behind 10-2 Florida and 10-2 Penn State. The Nittany Lions have several wins better than anything Alabama can boast, and at least Florida beat Auburn.
Even if Alabama doesn't drop out of the Top 10, perhaps it will slip far enough to land in the Cotton Bowl against either Memphis or Boise State.
Suffice it to say, that would be quite the change of pace after five straight trips to the playoff.
But whether it's the Cotton, Orange, Sugar or Citrus in Alabama's future, one thing is certain: This is Nick Saban's most disappointing season since 2010, the last time the Crimson Tide lost three games in one season.
Not only has Alabama lost multiple regular-season games for the first time in 10 seasons, but the defensive-minded guru also manned the sideline while one rival (LSU) scored 46 and another (Auburn) put up 48 against his depleted front seven. Things probably would have gone differently if not for season-ending injuries suffered by linebackers Dylan Moses and Joshua McMillon in August, but dreaming about what might have been is all the Crimson Tide have left now.
With that, let the "Mac Jones or Taulia Tagovailoa in 2020?" debates begin.

2019 The Alabama Game

I got back to the house from Atlanta as the first quarter ended and decided to watch the game without worrying about this commentary.

Halftime Score
Auburn 27
Alabama 31

Back and forth first half.  I certainly did not expect this kind of game.  We give up too many big plays.  Can our offense keep up in the second half?  I am amazed that we have scored 27 points already.

Third Quarter

Auburn 30
Alabama 31

Auburn 37
Alabama 31

Auburn 37
Alabama 38

Auburn 40
Alabama 38

Fourth Quarter

Auburn 40
Alabama 45

Auburn 48
Alabama 45
Auburn 48, Alabama 45 (8:08)
Auburn retakes the lead on Shaun Shivers' 11-yard touchdown run on a jet sweep with Wildcat quarterback JaTarvious Whitlow handing him the ball. Shivers drilled an Alabama player, whose helmet popped off into the air on the run. Bo Nix then hit Shedrick Jackson for a 2-point conversion pass to give Auburn a 3-point lead. That was a 10-play, 77-yard drive for Auburn.

I cannot believe what I am watching!

Alabama misses a potential tying field goal.  The ball hits the left upright.  Then they have 12 men on the field that gives us a first down and we end the game in victory formation.
Wow!  This is one of the all-time great wins over Alabama that will be talked about forever. Yes!

Final Score

2019 The Samford Game

Auburn 52  Samford 0

Pretty much what I expected.  We did get to see Cord Sandberg.  He looked pretty good against inferior competition.

The Offense

Jason Caldwell in Auburn Undercover has it right.  If the Auburn cannot run the ball downhill, then the offense must play fast in 2-minute mode.  It's that simple.

2019 The Georgia Game

Here we go with Georgia again.  At Jordan-Hare 2:30 telecast on CBS.  The Bulldogs are a slight favorite.  Will our offense give us a chance?

FIRST QUARTER

The Tigers begin a nice looking drive to open the game but the drive bogs down, and Carlson misses a FG attempt.  We've seen this script before.

Georgia goes three and out.  Their punt is not fielded and rolls all the way to our one.

After one first down Auburn punts to the Georgia 39.  So far our offense has only run the ball twice; otherwise, short passes.

After one first down Georgia gets a completion from midfield for the touchdown.  Their receiver was behind three of our receives.  5:56 in the first.

Auburn 0 Georgia 7

The Tigers are three and out.  So far it doesn't look like our offense can answer the bell.
Georgia fair-catches around their 25.

We finally get some traction on their QB and the Bulldogs punt from their 33.  Auburn from their 16.

SECOND QUARTER

Still waiting for our offense to get in sync.  Gotta happen if we are to win this game.  Our defense can hold on for only so long.

Once again no go.  Three and out

After one first down, Georgia is punting into the end zone.
Still early in the second quarter.

The Tigers get some traction finally between the tackles as Whitlow comes in running hard.  The Tigers cross midfield.
The Tigers move to 4th and 2 at the Georgia 38.  But on 4th Whitlow gets pushed backwards to midfield.  Good stuffing defense by the Bulldogs.  But now they have the ball at midfield.  The offense has crossed midfield twice but cannot sustain a drive or have to have Carlson try a long field goal.

It's probably going to take a big turnover to turn this game around.

Georgia is three and out punting from our 47.  The punt goes OOB at the 11.

An explosive offensive play would be just as good as a turnover.  Not this time either.  Three and out.
We have no mojo at all on offense.  Good punt and a clear targeting call on Georgia.  The Georgia targeting is upheld and their player is ejected.  Georgia starts back at their 25.

Georgia goes three and out.  Any kind of offense at all and we'd be leading in this game.  Georgia's punter has been tremendous.  He has helped to maintain their field position advantage all game.

We start from around our 15.  Finally there's a long completion to our 45.
We move to third and 9 from our 46 and a timeout.
First down completion but then Nix fumbles after a gain and Georgia recovers on on their 47.  Ball security seems to be a Nix problem.  There goes a promising drive the hard way.

1:54 left and Georgia faces fourth down.
It's about time their punter shanked one.
Good return at least out to our 29.

Three straight incompletions and we are punting with 1:26 left.  Hastings dropped one pass.  A close play OOB with Williams on another.

Alas, Georgia moves the ball as the quarter draws to a close.
With 55 seconds to go they move to our 40.
There's a burst and their RB is all the way to our 14.  Georgia looks crisp on this drive and our defense looks hapless.
With 32 seconds left UGA is on our 8,
With 27 seconds left and a timeout due to an injury to a non player along the sidelines Georgia is ready to score again.
From the five on third and one the short pass around the right side for the touchdown.  Georgia has probably put this game away.
With less than two minutes to go our offense cannot maintain possession and Georgia take advantage.  Very brutal.

Auburn 0  Georgia 14

Georgia gets the ball coming out.  This will take another miracle at Jordan-Hare.

THIRD QUARTER

Georgia receives and goes three and out.  We get good field position on the punt from our 35.

We move to a first down at the UGA 43 but as is typical that's it.  Fortunately our punt goes OOB at the Bulldog two.  Need to take advantage of this.

Georgia is three and out, punting from their five.  AU begins on their 42.  Come on, offense!
Georgia is called for a personal foul on the punt and we actually start at their 48.
Three downs it's fourth down.  No go offense.
The punt goes OOB at the UGA 12.

After two offensive nothings we are getting to where Georgia gets the clinching score if they don't have it already.

Georgia is quickly out to their 40 running ball effectively.  They can run; we can't.
4:59 left in the third.  The Bulldogs are able to run the football and at this point our defense is wearing down.
First down UGA to our 15.
First play from there TD pass to the end zone.  Game, set, match.
The TD pass was close, so reviewed, and the pass ruled incomplete.
There is a PF call on Auburn and Georgia is first and goal from the 8.
TD pass from the five pretty as you please.
The better team is going to win this game.  No argument.
Seconds left in the third quarter.

Auburn 0  Georgia 21

FOURTH QUARTER

First down AU to the UGA 25.  Finally some movement but way too late in the game.
First down to the 14.

First and goal from the three and the Tigers get on the board with a 3 yd. pass to Eli Stove.
10:04 left.

Auburn 7  Georgia 21

Auburn recovers an onside kick!!!
The play is reviewed and AU has to kick again with some kind illegal block called on Schwartz with the ball on the ground.  So close.
Georgia is punting from their 21 with 8:25 to go.
Georgia is punting from 16 after a procedure penalty.
AU starts on their 43.
8:11 left.
Wouldn't a quick score be nice?

Two passes and the Tigers are rolling.
First and goal inside the five.
Touchdown Auburn!
Nix from the two!  Wow!
First rushing touchdown by UGA all year.
That was a quick score.
We have a ballgame.
Two touchdowns in the last 3 minutes.
57 seconds on the last drive.
7:03 left.

Auburn 14  Georgia 21

I had given up Auburn for dead, but here we are.

Georgia goes three and out throwing on every down to stop the clock.
Auburn resumes possession with exactly 6 minutes left on our 28.
First down to the AU 45.
On the Georgia 47 Nix fumbles the snap and we barely recover.
We move to fourth and five from midfield.  Oh, boy.
This is probably it.
Nix runs for the first down around left end.
First down pass to Williams on a close play at the sideline but the play is overturned on review.
Boo!
We move to fourth and two at the UGA 34.
Open receiver for the first but the pass is a little behind the receiver and he cannot come up with it.
Georgia ball with 2:24 left.
Georgia second down Auburn timeout with 2:19 left.
Georgia third down Auburn timeout with 2:16 left.
Georgia fourth and six timeout Auburn with 2:10 left.
Punt OOB at the Auburn 27.
2:03.  Auburn out of timeouts.
First pass incomplete.  Nix is not super accurate on his throws.
We move to third and 10.
We move to fourth and 10 with a drop on what would have been a first down.
1:44 left.
Nix is sacked and that's it.  Offensive line fell down.
1:39 left.
UGA will run out the clock.

The offense came back big time but not all the way back.  Nix showing nerves with less than accurate throwing it seems to me.  On the next to last possession an accurate short pass would resulted in a first down and who knows after that.  It's done.

Auburn 14 Georgia 21

Georgia Next

Next to Alabama, the Georgia rivalry features the most memories in my mind.  I can remember the first one for me in 1968 when the Bulldogs won a close in Auburn when Vince Dooley was still a young coach in Athens.  It's hard to beat 2013 with the Miracle at Jordan-Hare.  We beat them good in 2017 at Jordan-Hare.  Can the Tigers do it again?

2019 The Ole Miss Game

This is the essence of a "trap game."  Auburn is favored by about 19.5 points with an off-week next week before Georgia.  Lose this game and the season is shot, and Malzahn seat will get hot quickly.  Joey Gatewood is gone.  We are an injury away from QB disaster.  The Rebels are second in the SEC in rushing.  They scored 31 on Alabama.  Ole Miss could win this game if Auburn does not play well.

FIRST QUARTER

Ole Miss receives and crosses midfield but our defense gets a stop on 4th and two at the AU 42.

The Tigers quickly move to the Ole Miss 28.
Alas, as is too often the case, we move to 4th down and a 41 FG attempt missed wide left.
Not a good start.  Sporadic offense as usual.  I am really nervous about this game already.

Ole Miss at their 24.
Ole Miss punting from their 49.
Auburn from their 15 after the punt.

Second play long completion to Schwartz to the Rebel 35.
As usual all we get is another missed FG attempt, this one about 49 yards.
Two catchable passes dropped are the culprits.
5:09 to go in the first.
This game is giving me a bad vibe.

From their 31 Ole Miss goes three and out.
Auburn starts on their 27.

The Tigers march sharply mostly on short passes to the Ole Miss 34 whereupon Nix fumbles the ball away.  Ole Miss on their 38.  This is not going well.  Our offense finds some way to botch a drive.

Ole Miss punts from the AU 47.  The Tigers take the ball back at their 18.

The quarter ends with Auburn on the move again crossing midfield.

SECOND QUARTER

The drive ends at midfield with a punt to the Ole Miss 10.

Ole Miss punts.  Auburn at their 25.
This is a lackluster game so far with Auburn having a yardage advantage but no points.

The Tigers drive to a first and goal at the Ole Miss 8 mostly on an efficient short passing game.
Second and goal from the five with a Rebel timeout.
Harold Joiner in the wildcat looks like he will score but fumbles at the one and fortunately Driscoll recovers at the two.
Incomplete pass.
Auburn has driven the ball up and down the field but as usual we have to settle for the FG attempt again, fortunately good.
So frustrating but we've become used to it.  How Joiner could have dropped that ball is amazing to me.  If it's not one thing it's something else.

Auburn 3  Ole Miss 0

Ole Miss punts from their 48 into the end zone.
If our offense doesn't pick it up Ole Miss will remain in this game to the end.

There is a 79 yard completion to the Ole Miss one to Joiner down the left sideline wide open on the catch.  We need to see more of Harold Joiner.
First and goal from the one and on the first play Williams punches it in.
That is more like it.
80 yard drive in three plays.

Auburn 10 Ole Miss 0

Three and out for Ole Miss and Auburn gets the ball back on their 28 with 1:38 left.

We can move only to the our 34 after trying a long pass completion rather than going for the first down, and we're punting with 1:24 left and Ole Miss will get the ball back.  A long percentage play will give Ole Miss a momentum swing.
Ole Miss gets a huge punt return all the way to the Auburn 23 with still over a minute left.  A bad turn of events.

An Ole Miss run to the Auburn 14.
Ole Miss run to the four.  Yikes!
Ole Miss touchdown on a 4-yrd. run.
What a late reversal.  Oh, my, my.

Auburn had the ball with under 2 minutes left and two timeouts but after a 55 yard punt return we have a ballgame.

Auburn 10 Ole Miss 7

A disgusting end to the first half.
This could get hairy before it's over.
Two missed field goals.  One turnover.  Giving up a 55 yard punt return.  Going three and out late to give Ole Miss the punt return opportunity.  Our offense is the same old inconsistent bunch.

THIRD QUARTER

Auburn gets the ball coming out.

Good KO return to almost midfield.
The Tigers march smartly for the touchdown.
Bo Nix fakes the middle and runs untouched around right end into the end zone.
That drive was mainly power running between the tackles.

Auburn 17  Ole Miss 7

Ole Miss quickly goes three and out.
Auburn on their 27 after the punt.

Auburn benefits on an unsportsmanlike to get a first down avoiding a fourth down.
The Tigers move inside the Ole Miss 40.
The drive ends at the Ole Miss 20.
Carlson is true.  Okay, but I so sick of field goals.

Auburn 20  Ole Miss 7

Ole Miss drives just across midfield before punting inside the Auburn give.

The quarter ends with Auburn driving near midfield.

FOURTH QUARTER

The Tigers end up punting to inside the Rebel 10.

First play Derrick Brown gets called for a late hit out of bounds.  A senior should know better than that.
Ole Miss is out to our 47 quickly.
This game is far from over.
Ole Miss moves to third and three.
Stuffed on third down!
They go for it and make the first down on 4th and five the QB scampering up the middle.
Another major distance penalty on Auburn and Ole Miss is at the Auburn 13.
We move to 4th and two.
First down to the one.
5:56 left.  This is too, too scary.
Nick Coe is tended to on the field after the last play.
Next play touchdown.

Auburn 20 Ole Miss 14

5:45 left.

The Tigers drive to a missed 49 yard FG attempt.  I would have punted.  Carlson doesn't yet have the moxie to make such a kick.

It's a heart-stopper.
Ole Miss drives from their 32 to a fourth and two with 17 seconds left around our 40 but we get pressure on their QB and Christian Tutt intercepts and gets to run out the remaining seconds.  Whew!

AUBURN 20  OLE MISS 15

Joey Gatewood

We learned Wednesday that he is leaving the Auburn team.  Good luck to him.  He will likely do well somewhere else with a better opportunity.  I blame Malzahn for his leaving before the end of the season.  Gatewood was likely led to believe that would get "special package" opportunities that were not forthcoming.  That's my guess anyway.  Malzahn is under the gun again.

2019 The LSU Game

It's a rainy and day in Shelby County.  What kind of day will it be for Auburn before the end of the day in Louisiana?  Auburn is a 10.5 point underdog to #2 LSU.  Nobody is giving Auburn a chance.  The 6 and 1  Tigers must win today to stay alive for the highest post season chances.

FIRST QUARTER

Auburn receives after one first down we punt.
LSU starts on their 12.

LSU goes three and out.
AU resumes possession on our 46 which includes a holding call against LSU on the punt.

First down to the LSU 40 from a nifty completion to Schwartz over the middle.
First down to the LSU 32 on a pass interference penalty.
First down to the LSU 17.
Moving the ball on short pass completions.
First down to the LSU 7.
We move to third and goal from the 5.
Back five on a false start.  Yuk!
Incomplete pass as LSU blitzes as you would expect.
FG good.

Auburn 3  LSU 0

The rain pours outside in Pelham as LSU resumes possession.
LSU commence a drive.  I don't like it.
LSU to the AU 39.
They are mixing runs and short passes.  Hard to stop it looks like.
First down to the Auburn 29.
Burrow is sacked on the 35.
LSU moves to fourth and 15 and a punt.
Auburn ball on the 20 as LSU cannot keep out of the end zone.
After one first down the Tigers punt to the LSU 11.

First play Burrow is sacked at the 2.
The quarter ends with LSU facing 3rd and 12.

SECOND QUARTER

So far, so good.  But the flow of his game can change quickly especially when it's LSU.

Burrow escapes a big rush and runs for the first down.  Should have sacked him.
Another first down on third and five.  Burrow is hard to sack.
Before you now it LSU has first down at the Auburn 20.
Next play TD pass in the end zone.

Auburn 3  LSU 7

Their QB is tough to contain.  Accurate passes.  Good feet.

First play from the 25 Nix is called for grounding and we are quickly punting on 4th and 14.
LSU starts on their 28.
Our Tigers seem rattled right now.  Gotta get it together.

LSU drives to a dramatic fourth and one and our defense holds!
Auburn ball on our 29.  That was huge.

After an incompletion we get another false start.  We've had several so far.
A loss on second and 15.  We are going backwards.
Completion to the 34 but fourth down.
LSU MUFFS THE PUNT AND SHIVERS RECOVERS ON THE LSU 27!!!
The plan is reviewed as to whether the catcher's knee was down before the muff.
The play stands; Auburn ball.

First down to the 9.
Whitlow to inside the five.
Yes, Whitlow is in the game.
Whitlow to the two or maybe the one.
Williams to inside the one just just short of the line.  Oh, my.
What are we going to do on forth and inches.
The play is reviewed but the call on the field stands inches short.
Touchdown Auburn on the QB sneak!!!  Yes, sir!
Still the play is reviewed but the call on the field is touchdown in a mass of humanity at the goal line.
The call on the field is quickly confirmed.

Auburn 10  LSU 7

So far, so good.
3:06 to go in the half.

LSU drives to a third and 10 at the Auburn 11.
Pass complete leaving fourth and one at the two year line.
LSU elects to go for the three.  Interesting.
Kick good.

Auburn 10  LSU 10

33 seconds left in the half.
First play long run by DJ Williams.
Auburn downs the ball with 11 seconds left.
Pass intercepted at the two in a jump ball with Seth Williams.
The half ends.
Tie game heading to the second.

THIRD QUARTER

LSU receives and after one first down their punt goes from their 46 to the Auburn 21.
First play D.J. Williams explodes thru an opening in the line and goes the LSU nine---a 70 yard scamper.  Is this what we've been waiting for with Williams?
Two plays gets us to the five, the second play from Gatewood.
Third and goal from the five.
Pass incomplete.  Yikes, we can't punch it in first and goal from the nine.
The FG attempt is good.
Points, but disappointing not to get the TD with first and goal from the nine.  This could hurt down the line.

Auburn 13  LSU 10

This could be another historic Auburn/LSU battle with something unusual happening before it's over.

LSU moves methodically down the field for a first and goal at the six.
Auburn is offside.
Second and goal from two.
Third and goal from the two.
Fourth and goal from the two.
WE STOP THEM!  Short pass out to the left and the receive is stymied before he can reach the goal line.  WHAT A GOAL LINE SAND!!!

Auburn from the two.
We move quickly to third and 10 from the two.
Now fourth and we are punting from our end zone.
LSU fair catches at our 38.  Defense has to come up big again.

What break or weird thing is going to happen in this game?

Auburn intercepts at the goal after one LSU first down!  Our defender had position in front of the LSU receiver.

First down Auburn at our one.
After two short passes that could have been caught we are punting from our six.
How long can our defense hold on w/o help from our offense?
The punt an LSU starts at our 45.

Big run first play and LSU is at our 23.
Another run and they our just outside the ten.
Our defense is giving way.
Just like that LSU runs right thru our defense.  Tired?  Must be.

Auburn 13  LSU 16  (PAT kick is no good)

Auburn goes three and out.  The punt goes to the LSU 33.
At this point with 2:42 left in the third LSU has all of the momentum.
It doesn't look good, folks.

LSU moves to a first down at the Auburn 30.
We need to hold them to a FG attempt.
The quarter ends with LSU at 2nd and seven at the Auburn 27.
LSU has control of this game at the moment.
Will something crazy happen for us?

LSU drives for another TD.  On third and two their QB scampers up the middle on a keep and no one is there to stop him.  It looks bleak to say the least.  At least 13:29 is left in the game.

Auburn 13  LSU 23

We get a good KO return across midfield, but then center Kim air mails a snap over Nix's head and any chance of mounting a drive vanishes.  Un-be-liev-able.  Our offense simply cannot do anything.
Our punts rolls to the LSU 6.  Still early in the fourth.

After an LSU punt we regain possession on our 36.

After one first down we move to 4th and 23.  Game over.  Our offense simply will not respond.

With 2:32 to go a bit of lightening strikes.  After holding LSU, we get a TD from a short 7 pass into the end zone.

Auburn 20  LSU 23

Onside kick time.  Good onside, the ball is active, we might have had it, but LSU recovers.  It was close.

LSU is able to run the clock out.

FINAL SCORE

Auburn 20  LSU 23

It certainly could have been our game.

LSU Week

Much will be made of how Auburn hasn't won in Baton Rouge since 1999 and perhaps rightly so, but I don't believe this has any affect on who wins Saturday afternoon.    LSU is a big favorite with an early line of 12.5.  I have no problem with that.  LSU should win.  They have a very good team with perhaps the best performing QB in the country.  Our Tigers will need to play well and get some breaks.  I am anxious to see what happens.

2019 The Arkansas Game

After an off-week, the Tigers are in Fayetteville for a morning kickoff on the SEC Network.  Auburn seems to be a double digit favorite.  The Hogs are on a long conference losing streak.  Whitlow is out at running back.  Auburn does not yet have a favorable power running game.  If we can't run the ball today, we will lose.  Can Auburn get off to a good start?  We did not get off to a good start at Florida and lost the game.  Will Bo Nix be sharp?

FIRST QUARTER

Arkansas receives and on third and six Marlon Davidson strips the QB of the ball and recovers the fumble.  Auburn is in business on the Arkansas 22.

First and goal Auburn at the four after two plays.

4:30 left in the half.

Arkansas advances to the Auburn 29, their deepest penetration so far.
On the last play of the half Arkansas misses a 44 yard FG attempt.

So far, so good, but we should have added to the score especially foiling that fake punt.  Arkansas is still in the game.  We have run the ball adequately but Nix has not been sharp in his passing.

THIRD QUARTER

Auburn is three and out to start the half after suffering a delay penalty before the first snap.  Our offense is not good.

First down Arkansas at the Auburn 12.
Defense holds from there.  The 27 yard FG is good.
5:53 left in the third.

Auburn 17  Arkansas 3

It's about time now for our offense to show up.  We must complete some passes.  Nix has not been sharp in reads and accuracy.

From the 27 Auburn moves to a first down to the Arkansas 48 and on the first play from there Nix hits a wide-open Seth Williams for a 48 yard strike and touchdown.  Finally some offense!  Five plays 72 yards.

Auburn 24  Arkansas 3

First for Arky from their 25 and Javarius Davis intercepts!

First play Schwartz sweeps to the Arkansas 28.  First play from there to Schwartz in the end zone.  Touchdown Auburn!!! Wow!!!  Two plays 56 yard.  16 seconds.  All about Anthony Schwartz.  Set up by the Davis interception.  Nothing to it!  Two touchdowns in 22 seconds.

Arkansas takes advantage of the turnover.
14 seconds left in the third.

Auburn 31  Arkansas 10

The quarter ends with Auburn at second and eight from their 38.

Auburn 37  Arkansas 10

No more drama today.  That oughta do it.

Arkansas is quickly three and out.
AU sets up at their 41.

The Tigers drive for the touchdown.
Gatewood hits JJ Wilson for the 18 yard TD pass.  Good job by Joey Gatewood on that throw.
7:03 left

Auburn 44  Arkansas 10

No drama today.  I like it this way.

Next possession Harold Joiner right up the middle untouched 32 yards for a touchdown.  I like the looks of big Harold Joiner.  Why isn't he more in the ground game?  Rushing today over 300 yards.
2:27 left.

FINAL SCORE

Auburn 51  Arkansas 10

Good response to the Florida loss.  Now Baton Rouge.

2019 The Florida Game

Here we go with the renewal of an ancient rivalry from Florida Field.  Both teams are unbeaten at 5 and 0 and 2 and 0 in the conference.  The game is the afternoon game on CBS.  Surprisingly, Auburn seems to be a 2.5 point favorite.  You never know about a Dan Mullen team.  I do not know what to expect.

FIRST QUARTER

The Tigers receive and go three and out.

UF starts on their 36.
Second play from scrimmage there is a long 68 yard TD pass for Florida as we seem to blitz which leaves a receiver open.

Auburn 0  Florida 7

Not the start we needed in a hostile environment.

Starting from the 26 we move to third and one.
We lose a couple of yards and Auburn is punting again.

UF from their 23.

Florida recovers inside our five.
An unsportsmanlike moves the ball back to the 17.

Derrick Brown rumbles all the way to the UF 35.  Could have gone all the way.

Auburn on the UF 35.
Second play Nix throws the interception.
UF on the AU 18 with a 15 yd. penalty tacked on.
Oh, my!
Isn't that 5 turnovers in this game so far?

Touchdown pass Florida from the 12.
What a wild mistake filled game.

Auburn 6  Florida 14

Our offense needs to get going.
Fourth and literally 2 inches and Malzahn elects to punt.
11.29 left in the half.
We can't run the ball land Nix is getting pressured in the passing pocket.

Florida goes three and out.
But UF fakes the punt and Auburn recovers inside the UF 35.

Malzahn decides to go for the one.

First UF play after the kickoff and their QB Trask goes down to the turf.
After Franks and Trask QB #3 is in the game.
He looks like a slippery runner early on.
The new QB moves the Gators to two first downs.
Make that three first downs.  He looks better than Trask.
First down the Auburn 27.
We move to third and eight.
We move to fourth down.
The 41 yd. FG is good.

Auburn 13  Florida 17

The Tigers go three and out.
4th and two.

1:45 left and Florida is punting.
The Tigers begin on their 32.
4th and 10 with 1:19 left.
No push to our offense.
UF on their 32.

The half ends with UF holding the ball on 4th and 9.

This game is do different from last week.  I have never seen such a mistake-filled game.  I suppose we are lucky to be trailing by only 4.

17-13 Florida at the break.

THIRD QUARTER

After one first down UF punts into the end zone.
Auburn cannot convert a third and one and punts to the UF 33.

UF cannot move the ball either.
The punt reaches the end zone.
After one first down Auburn is punting.
UF on their 27.
UF moves the ball thanks to two straight questionable pass interference calls.

Second rush out to the 20.
First down running the ball to the 37.
There's a long completion to Williams running all alone!
First down inside the 15.
We move to third and seven.
False start.  Goodness.  Third and 12.
THEN interception in the end zone.  What did Nix see?  He throws it right to a Gator.
Goodness gracious.  What a mistake filled game on both sides.
Thank goodness we have another quarter to go.
The quarter ends with UF facing second and eight.

17-13 Florida going into the fourth.

FOURTH QUARTER

Florida marches right down the field and it look like for sure they will reach end zone when Derrick Brown takes the ball away from Trask and rumbles to the AU 40.
The big break we needed is at hand.

We move to the UF 36 but on third and eight Nix panics in the pocket and losses 22 yards.  We punt to the Florida 12.  Our offense just cannot sustain anything.  Time is running out.

9:19 left.  Still time.
BUT first play we miss a tackle that should have been at the line of scrimmage and their runner goes the distance.  Ugly!  Now we are in desperate straits.  That's a back-breaker.

Auburn 13  Florida 24

The Tigers drive out to their 45 but cannot sustain possession on 4th and 12.
With 5:46 to go Florida is in control.

Bo Nix finally has the rough game you might expect from a true freshman.  A learning experience for sure.  Florida is not that good.  LSU will destroy them next week.  Our offense just couldn't sustain anything all day long.

FINAL SCORE

24 - 13 Florida

The drive ends with a short field goal.

Auburn 28  State 9

Facing third and 10.
Fourth and 10 after a short pass attempt is dropped.
Targeting call on State.  First down Auburn.

I have never seen an Auburn offense this potent.

2019 The TAMU Game

Auburn has never lost in three previous games on Kyle Field.  That has no bearing on today's game.  Each game stands on its own.  It's 2:30 kickoff on CBS.
The Aggies are a 4 point favorite.  They have the home field advantage and it's a big one in College Station.  Auburn needs to run the football to win.  From what I've seen so far, I do not believe our offense can do so.  Our defense needs to avoid a slow start.  Our offense needs to stay in the game or else our defense will wear down.  Our passing game is not good enough to sustain a poor rushing game.  Our defense needs to pressure their QB Mond.  I doubt we can do so.  I am not worried about freshman Bo Nix.  We need Seth Williams who has been injured.  How effective will he be?  I'll be surprised if we win.

FIRST QUARTER

The Tigers receive and quickly and smartly march 75 yards for the touchdown all on the ground.  Schwartz sweeps around left end 57 yards for the long touchdown.  That's a big play explosion we needed to start a game in this hostile environment.

Auburn 7  TAMU 0

On their first obsession we get them third and 16 but the Aggies convert.
TAMU converts and third and eight.  We seem to always have trouble getting stops on third down.
Another third and eight and we get called holding.  That's three straight third conversions by TAMU.
Finally fourth and six.
We are stopping their run cold but gave up third down passes to this point.
The field goal attempt is no good!
Score still 7-0 Auburn.

After one first down we have to punt.  We had a second first down but it was called back for ineligible receiver downfield.  On one play Nix had a receiver downfield for what would have been a touchdown but the ball was slightly overthrown.
A too short punt OOB and the Aggies start around their 30.

This time the Tigers hold on third one.  There is a big punt return and we are in business in Aggie land at their 46.

2:09 left in the quarter and we move to third and two.
First down run to the Aggie 25.
First run by Swartz around left end to the eight.
Gatewood fakes the run and hits a wide-open Shenker in the left corner of the end zone.  Nifty play call!
The Tigers are on fire!

Auburn 14 TAMU 0

The quarter ends with a completed Aggie pass across midfield.
This is going to be a good one.

SECOND QUARTER

The drive with a short field goal.  Our defense stiffened when it had to.

Auburn 14  TAMU 3

The Tigers go three and out for the first time.
Let's not let them seize the momentum.
Aggies start on their 26.

The Aggies drive for two first downs almost to midfield.
TAMU moves to a third and fifteen.
No sir!  Fourth as their qb scrambles and we stop him well short of the first down.
The punt goes into the end zone.  Okay.

From the 20 the Tigers go three and out as our offense looks discombobulated for the first time.  Not good.
TAMU starts just across their 40.

The Aggies go three and out as Derrick Brown gets a big sack on third down!
The punt rolls dead inside our ten.

Nix scrambles for a first down.
Then we have to punt.  Hastings was open downfield but Nix overthrows him.
Auburn is punting from our 25 with 1:58 left.
TAMU sets up on their 20 with 1:47 left after the punt.

One first down.
Derrick Brown almost comes down with an interception ball right in his hands.
First down out to their 48.
We move to fourth and five from our 47.
TAMU punts OOB to our 6 with 34 seconds left.

Those last 34 seconds will elapse slowly as the home team uses their timeouts.
Auburn is forced to punt from around our five with 14 seconds left.  TO TAMU.
Seven seconds left TAMU at our 40.
Offsides Auburn now 4 seconds left.
The long FG attempt is wide left.

Halftime Score
Auburn 14 TAMU 3
The Tigers make two first quarter touchdowns hold up so far.

THIRD QUARTER

TAMU receives and they fumble on their first play scrimmage and Auburn recovers!
The Tigers move quickly to a first and goal from the seven.
Big opportunity here for the Tigers if we can capitalize.
Touchdown pass to Seth Williams!  From the nine.  Williams can catch the football by golly.

Auburn 21 TAMU 3

Couldn't ask for a better start to the second half.

Carlson kicks off OOB.  Don't need that.

We sack Mond twice.  A delay penalty and a procedure penalty and Aggies are out 3rd and 30.

The punt goes into the end zone.

From our 20 we go three and out.
The ball is fair-caught at their 37.

The Aggies of three and out.
Auburn ball at our nine.
They are getting a better punting performance than Auburn.
But there is a procedure penalty on TAMU and have to punt again.
Another penalty against the Aggies and they are punting for the third time.
This Tutt returns to the AU 26.

The Tigers march methodically down the field.
This offense can look good when it wants to.
First down to the Aggie 46.
We go backwards from there and have to punt.
TAMU from their fifteen.

The third quarter ends with TAMU driving with a first down at the Auburn thirty something as they dink us with short pass completions.

FOURTH QUARTER

Can the Tigers hold a 21 to 3 lead in the 4th quarter at Kyle Field?

The Aggies drive to a 27 yd. TD pass.

Auburn 21  TAMU 10

The amazing Tigers answer with a TD pass to hopefully seal the game all on the game.  Their defense must tired.  I've been wondering about Whitlow.  There he is in the 4th quarter running the ball down their throats.  12 plays 69 yards over 6 minutes off the clock. My, oh my!
That was a game winning drive!

Auburn 28 TAMU 10

TAMU continues with the short passes as the clock moves under 8 minutes.
Injured Aggie clock stopped at the TAMU 39 with one of their players on the turf.
There is a completion to the AU 44.
There is a completion to the AU 32.
Pass interference to the AU 18.
6:54 to go.
The Aggies drive to a 4th and goal at the six and elect to kick the field goal.

Auburn 28 TAMU 13.

Interesting decision by Dumbo Fisher.
5:36 to go.
The kick goes into the end zone.

The Tigers are punting with 4:41 to go.
It's never easy, is it?
The kick is mishandled but the Aggies recover at their 19.

The Aggies short pass their way down the field getting a TD on a 15 pass.  Oh, my.
2:12 to go.

Auburn 28 TAMU 20

On 2nd and 8 with 2:05 left Fisher calls his last timeout.
On third and five with 1:20 left Auburn calls TO after running play clock down.
Nix keeps around left end for the first down.  Game, set, match.
Our freshman QB makes the game winning scoot to ice the game.
Auburn wins again at Kyle Field!

AUBURN 28  TEXAS A AND M 20

It's great to beat Dumbo Fisher.
Not necessarily pretty but a good game plan.
We ran the football.  TAMU could not run the ball.
193 yards on the ground.
We got off to a good start and made it hold up.
That's the deciding factor so often in SEC football.

War Eagle!!!
