The 2013 Ole Miss Game

Ole Miss comes to Auburn for each team's fourth game of the season.  Both teams are 3 and 1.  The Rebels lost to Alabama last week.  Auburn lost to LSU two weeks ago.  The Tigers have the benefit of a week off before this game.  You never know if that helps or hurts.  It could go either way.  Ole Miss is a 3-point favorite.  I don't like that.  We should never be an underdog to Mississippi especially at home.  The game is a 6 o'clock kickoff on ESPNU.

FIRST QUARTER

The Rebels receive and start at their 27.
They move inside Auburn territory but a big sack forces OM to punt from midfield.
The Tigers start at their 20 after the punt into the end zone.
The Tigers quickly move into OM territory after a big gain by Mason turning a short pass into a huge gain.
There is a big run by Marshall.
There is a sterling run by Mason down to the one.
Mason goes in on the next play!
The try for 2 fails.  A better pass and it would have been good.
The Tigers move smartly right down the field 80 yards on their first possession for the touchdown.

Auburn 6  Ole Miss 0

The Rebels drive to the AU 25 but there our defense stiffens and the 42-yrd. FG is good.
Once again our defense bends but doesn't break.  On at least 2 of their long gains we miss tackles at the line of scrimmage.

Auburn 6  Ole Miss 3

As we begin the next Auburn possession Georgia and Tennessee go into overtime in Knoxville.
The Tigers start at the 25 after the touchback.
After one first down we punt from the AU 46.  Two passes should have been caught.
Ole Miss starts at their 20 after a 39-yrd. punt with 5:09 left in the first quarter.
Georgia kicks a FG in overtime to beat Tennessee 34 to 31.
Ole Miss moves the ball right down the field to the Auburn 22 but on 2nd and 10 Robinson Therezie intercepts and runs all the way to the end zone!!!  How electrifying!!!  The point after is good.

Auburn 13  Ole Miss 3

That was Bo Wallace's first interception of the year.  It was a short pass attempt and Therezie tipped the ball up to himself and had clear sailing in front of him.
From the 25 OM moves to midfield.
The quarter ends with OM facing 3rd and 9 at the Auburn 49.

SECOND QUARTER

On the last play of the quarter Cassanova McKinzy is injured and has to be carted off the field.  It looks like a serious injury.  McKinzy is immobilized being taken from the field.
Okay.  After a delay we start the second quarter.
Pass incomplete and the Johnny Rebs have to punt!
Auburn starts on the 17.
Marshall misses a wide-open receiver.  His accuracy is not good.
Another incompletion.  Our offense is stagnating.
Our offense has got to get it going.  We are not going to keep this team under 13 points for the duration.
OM starts on their 31.
OM moves to a 4th and 1 and they go for it.
First down Ole Miss.
But OM moves to a 4th and 8 and punts into the end zone.  The Tigers start at their 20.  Somehow our defense has held the Rebels to 3 points so far but it won't continue indefinitely.
Our offense plays in spurts.  We have to be more consistent.
Two first downs and Auburn crosses midfield.
Pounding on the ground AU runs to a first down at the Rebel 11.
We are obviously running the ball to let our defense rest.
CAP runs to the 5.  Nick Marshall runs it in from the five!
That's an 80 yard drive entirely on the ground except for a 5-yd. pass to Marcus Davis.
12 plays 80 yards over 4 minutes taken off the clock.

Auburn 20  Ole Miss 3

The highlight of that drive was great running by Nick Marshall.  He won't run over people but he will juke and run around defenders.
Our defense bends but doesn't break once again.  OM gets a long pass completion on a 4th and 2 from around midfield in the big play in the drive.
The 45-yd. FG attempt is good.  Their kicker has a big leg.
Carl Lawson got a big sack on 3rd down to force the field goal.

Auburn 20  Ole Miss 6

The first half ends.  We have to be pleased.  Our announcers say this is Auburn's best half of the season.  But Ole Miss can score.  This game will likely be a nail-biter before it's over.  We get the ball to start the second half.  It's great to hold them to just two field goals.

THIRD QUARTER

The Coach says at the half that we need to run the ball, get that initial first down, and limit Ole Miss's big plays.
The kickoff goes out of bounds so we start on the 35.
A first down is called back after a late holding call.
Alas, a penalty results in a 3 and out.  Not the start we needed.  This game will go down to the last play.
OM will start at their 23.
Tragically on a 4th down around midfield OM gets a run down to the Auburn 6 on a toss sweep.
We were not ready for that play on 4th down.  Big, big play for Ole Miss.
2nd and goal from the 5 and OM calls timeout.
This is not the start we wanted in the second half but I am not surprised.  If our offense cannot pick up that initial first down it leads to trouble.
Our defense holds yet once again and OM has to settle for the field goal.

Auburn 20  Ole Miss 9

At least we held them to 3 but this cannot continue.  Our offense has to show up or we will lose.
We start at the 25.
There is a pass to Mason on a wheel route.
There's an 18 yard by Marshall.
The Tigers move to 3rd and goal from the 5.
Marshall runs it in from the 5.  Great fake to Grant.  Marshall has been great running the ball tonight.

Auburn 27  Ole Miss 9

The best part of our offense so far has been the running of Nick Marshall.  If he could only hit open receivers and the receivers would catch the ball he would be a great quarterback.
We hear that McKinzy is back on the sidelines wearing a neck brace.
Montravius Adams is out for this game with some kind of leg injury.  He is sitting on the bench still in uniform.
OM starts on their 20.
Quickly on the first play OM gets a pass completion just across the 50.
On the second play from there OM gets the TD pass.  UGH!
The two teams exchange touchdowns.  This game will go to the wire doubt it not.

Auburn 27  Ole Miss 16

Starting from the 25 will we get that initial first down?
It seems so important to get that initial first down for this offense.
Alas, we go 3 and out.  This was not a good possession.
It's nervous time already.
OM fair catches at the 30with 3:53 to go in the third and OM has the momentum.
OM has the ball back again quickly.
OM goes for it on 4th down again at their 47.
We stop them at our 49!
A short pass completion but an immediate tackle.
AU as the ball back.  Let 's move it!
There's a great run by Mason to the OM 36.
Auburn has 2nd and 6 as the quarter ends.

FOURTH QUARTER

Marshall carries for 15 yards to the 17.
BUT there's a fumble and they run the ball back to the 44.
THEN there is a 9 yard sack by Auburn!
3rd and 19 from the AU 36.
There's another sack!  Ole Miss goes backwards 10 yards on that possession.
OM punts 66 yards to the end zone.
Our defense rises up!
Too bad about the turnover but our defense certainly amazingly rises to the occasion.
Auburn drives to the 17, OM takes the ball away, but our defense pushes them back and now early in the final quarter we have the ball at our 20.  This game is far from over as we cling to an 11 point lead.
13:15 to go.
Two first downs pushes the ball out to the AU 46.
Marshall runs around left end for 16 yards.
3rd and 7 at the OM 37 with a timeout.
Mason is stopped at the line of scrimmage.
4th and 7.
I can't believe it but we try and miss a 54-yd. field goal.  I don't understand that.  Why don't you punt the ball and at least put them on their 20.  We may rue this decision before it's over.
So Ole Miss starts at their 37 and our lead is only 11.  As I have said all along, this game will go down to the final play.
There's no way Parkay would make a 54 yarder.
First down to the 48.
Long completion inside the AU 15.  Ole Miss is in business.
There's a screen pass for the touchdown and here we go.
Ole Miss goes for 2.
The pass into the end zone is incomplete.
Oh, my.  Ole Miss scores in a hurry.  Our offense has to do something or we will lose this game.

Auburn 27  Ole Miss 22

Eight and a half minutes to go and Stan White says our offense has to answer.
Nick Marshall is kind of gimpy-legged.
Ole Miss has run 77 plays.  Our defense has to be wearing down.
OM has success on defense in shooting gaps.  We control the line of scrimmage if they run a base defense.
Good runback by Mason from the goal line to the AU 37.
CAP runs to the OM 39 but loses the ball and OM recovers.  OH, my!
How tragic.  Great run but the turnover is a killer.
We led 20 to 6 at the half and now this.
On third Auburn intercepts!  Ryan Smith does the honors at midfield.  Is that big or what!
From the OM 46 Mason picks up 4.
Marshall runs gingerly for 2.
Third and 4 from the OM 40.
Timeout Auburn.
5:38 to go.
Oh, please a TD somehow here would give us a win most likely.
3rd and 4.  Big play coming.
Incomplete pass as Marshall scrambles and lobs it up for naught.
With 5:26 to go Parkay punts and the ball is downed at the one yard line.
OM has to go 99 yards.
Incomplete long pass.
Incomplete pass at the 20.
Incomplete pass again.
Ole Miss has to punt in tight formation from the back of their end zone and the punter shanks it!
Auburn gets the ball on the OM 31.
Mason runs for 3 and there is an unsportsmanlike call on the Rebels.
The ball moves inside the 15.
2nd down and 4 at the 7.
Mason to the 6.
Big play with a third and 3 at the 6.
No first down.
No touchdown.
Ole Miss calls its last timeout.
Mason is stopped at the line of scrimmage as a blitzer takes him down.  Otherwise it would have been a first down.
The field goal is good and Auburn leads by 8 with 3:02 to go.
Our defense has to show up one more time.

Auburn 30  Ole Miss 22

A touchdown might have sealed it but Ole Miss is not down and they have plenty of time.  Our defense has to get pressure on Bo Wallace.
OM starts at their 25.
After one first down the game ends with defensive fireworks.
Gabe Wright bulls his way thru the middle of the line and sacks Bo Russell.
On the 4th down play Carl Lawson will not be denied and drops Russell again!!!
Wow, what a great way to end this game.
Auburn beats 3-point favorite Ole Miss.  I hope we are never an underdog to Ole Miss again at home.
This is a great win.  We had some turnovers that could have lost us the game but our defense did what it had to do.  Our defense plays hard and is plucky.  Our defense made the plays when it needed to.  Give the credit to this defense.
We go to 4 and 1 and I assume we beat Western Carolina next week.
At the very least this team should get to 6 wins in Coach Malzahn's first year with the future looking bright.

Auburn 30  Ole Miss 22
