The 2013 Florida Atlantic Game

After last week's big win in College Station the 6 and 1 Tigers take on FAU in Jordan Hare favored by about 28 over the 2 and 5 Owls.  FAU is no Western Carolina.  Can the Tigers win this game decisively as we would like?  Will there be a letdown?  The Tigers moved up to 11th in the BCS standings.  The season is ours to claim.

FIRST QUARTER

The Tigers receive and from the 22 drive right down the field 78 yards for the touchdown.
Nick Marshall has a 46 yard run.
Tre Mason runs it in from the 8.
6 play drive all on the ground.

Auburn 7  FAU 0

From the 25 FAU picks up a first down but there's a fumble picked up by Whitehead and he runs it to the FAU 45.
First play from scrimmage and Corey Grant races down the right sideline untouched.  Touchdown Auburn!

Auburn 14  FAU 0

From the 25 after one first down the Owls punt.
Chris Davis runs the punt from the goal line to the FAU 28.
Great punt return!
From the 10 Marshall runs around left end untouched with great blocking.  Walks into the end zone.
The Tigers have yet to attempt a pass.

Auburn 21  FAU 0

No letdown yet!
Our defense has given a few yards up the middle.  Let's stop that.
Another first down but then an Owl punt.
5:08 to go in the first.
AU starts on the 15.
For the first time Auburn has to punt from midfield.
Fair catch at the 8 with 1:47 to go.
The Owls are three and out.
There's a short punt to the FAU 48.
On the last play of the quarter Grant sprints for 16 yards.
It's all Auburn so far.

SECOND QUARTER

Marshall gets sacked and is sitting on the ground on the FAU 39.
It might be the right shoulder.  Nick walks off the field and here comes JJ.
First play 3rd and 13 JJ hits Coates for 38 yards and the touchdown.  Just like that!
Jeremy Johnson comes in and on the first play finds a wide-open receiver.

Auburn 28  FAU 0

Let's hope NM is okay, but Jeremy Johnson sure looks good out there!
FAU is three and out.
Auburn gets the ball back on their 22 still early in the second quarter.
Quentin Riggins says NM is in the locker room getting evaluated.  It's his right shoulder.
Q thinks he will be okay but we will see.
In the Wildcat CAP runs for 33 yards up the middle.
The drive stalls and Auburn punts from the Owl 44.
Fair catch at the 15.
10:45 to go.
The visitors drive to the AU 47 but have to punt from there.
Auburn starts at their 19.
JJ is the quarterback.
The Tigers drive for a 44-yd. field goal.  JJ hits a couple of passes but misses on a couple.

Auburn 31  FAU 0

The Owls are three and out with 3:35 left.
Davis drops the punt but falls on it at the AU 33.
First play 67 yards JJ to Coates and he walk into the end zone.
Coates is becoming our go to receiver.
Lightning strikes!

Auburn 38  FAU 0

Now we know why Jeremy Johnson wasn't redshirted.
No hangover from the last week's big win at TAMU.
There's a completion to the Auburn 29 over Mincy.
After an incompetion their QB runs around left end for the touchdown.

Auburn 38  FAU 7

With 2:13 FAU gets on the board.
NM is out of the locker room but he won't play anymore tonight.
No need to risk putting him back out there tonight.
Bray returns the KO to the 30.
The drive ends with a missed 40-yd. FG attempt on the last play of the half.
We see Nick Marshall on the sidelines in street clothes smiling.  Hope he's ready to go next week!

THIRD QUARTER

First play FAU gets a long completion to the Auburn 35.  We can't have this.
First down to the AU 19.
There's sack back to the 25 by Dee Ford.
There's a completion to the 14.
Pass incomplete in the end zone.
The FG attempt is good.
The Owls open the second half with a drive to 3 points.

Auburn 38  FAU 10

FAU has now scored on two straight possessions.  We don't need to get sloppy here.
There's a good runback by Bray and tacking on a penalty and AU starts on the Owl 46.
CAP makes a bull run to the one and two plays later he rams over the goal line.
Our offense responds.

Auburn 45  FAU 10

FAU is three and out.
AU starts on the 22.
The quarter ends with Auburn driving with a first down at the FAU 21.
Kiehl Frazier is in at QB.

FOURTH QUARTER

There is an interception off the pass of JJ at the 2 yard line.  The ball was tipped.
FAU at their 2.
3 and out.
Marcus Davis loses 7 on the return and Auburn starts on their 36.
Jonathan Wallce is in at QB.
On 3rd and 11 Wallace runs for the first down.
On the next play Jonathan Ford runs to the 13.  Is he fast or what?!
Wallace to the 7.
False start moves the ball back 5 yards.
We are already over 600 total yards.
Two straight comical spots by the refs and we give the ball up on downs at the 4.
Our announcers are laughing at the terrible ball spots by the officials.
Utterly amazing poor officiating.
The spot of Wallace's was at least 2 yards short where he ended up.
3 and out.
AU at their 43.
The Tigers are three and out with about 3 minutes left.
Fair catch at the FAU 13.
Three and out.
Auburn runs the clock out.

Auburn 45  FAU 10

Not perfect, but no letdown.  The Tigers take care of business.
Now it's on to Fayetteville!!!

Florida Atlantic Preface

So here we are with a 6 and 1 Auburn football team that has already exceeded expectations.  It's hard to believe that a year ago we were 1 and 6.  We have some new players mixing with last year's players playing to their maximum.  It's all about coaching.  This much is clear.

Expectations are getting out-of-hand.  Sure, this team could run the table, but this team could lose some games too.  I hope the coaches have this team playing one game at a time.

I understand that FA is 2 and 5 and that AU is a 24 point favorite.  What I hope to see is a team that first of all wins of course, but also a team that takes care of business, doesn't play down to the opposition, and wins like it should rather than slopping around.

Let's take of this game like we should and head to Fayetteville.

TAMU Postmortem

We still revel in the afterglow of yesterday's thrilling 45 to 41 victory over those Aggies.  What a great feeling it is!  The future looks bright for Auburn football both today and in seasons beyond with Coach Malzain.  I can't wait to see how this season turns out.

The 2013 Texas A & M Game

When was the last Auburn was on CBS in the afternoon?  Here we are today from Kyle Field.   Can Auburn hang in there with the Aggies?  The home team is a 13/14 point favorite.  We'll soon have some answers.

FIRST QUARTER

That didn't take long.  The Aggies receive and march 67 yards for the touchdown in 6 plays and a minute forty-one.

AUBURN 0  TAMU 7                                                                                                                         From the 15 the Tigers run to a first down at the 24.
Another first down to the 34.
There's a long run by Grant to TAMU 32.
Mason runs for 15 and a first down to the 18.
Mar
shall runs for the touchdown from the 16.
Our offense matches the opening Aggie touchdown.  This is what we need.

AUBURN 7  TAMU 7

From their 25 we push them back to the 12 but there is a long pass completion but then Ryan Smith picks up the interception on a deflection close to the ground!  Great pick by Smith!
AU has the ball on their Tiger 38.
Louis goes to the Aggie 30 on a reverse.
Coates make a catch.
2nd and 7 from the 15.
Pass interferene and AU is first down at the 6.
Fumbled snap and a yard gain.
Grant loses back to the 8.
Marshall scrambles and we have to settle for the FG attempt.
Not good.  We gotta score TDs in the Red Zone.  First and goal at the 6 and we have to settle for the 3.
Points and we take the lead but this can cost us the game before it's over.

AUBURN 10  TAMU 7

TAMU starts at the 25.
First down at the 35 and on the next play the short pass and the receiver goes right down the sideline for the score.  We had two defenders out there but the receiver gets down the sideline easily.

AUBURN 10  TAMU 14

The Aggies can score so quickly.  It's amazing.
AU returns to the 20.
First down at the 44.
But Marshall drops the ball on the next play and the Aggies recover at the AU 49.
Big mistake by Nick kMarshall.
The ball flies out of his hands.  Not a big hit at all.
Sooner or late our defense has to stop these guys.
First down at the AU 37.
The Aggies march again and we cannot stop them.
Manziel scrambles and scrambles and throws long and Ryan White intercepts at the 4 yard line!
That's the second pick off Johnny Football.
Mason gains 3 or 4.  The clock is stopped at 1:45 with an injured Aggie.
On 3rd and 2 Marshall hits Prosch for 58 yards to the Aggie 32.
TO Auburn with 30 seconds in the first with Auburn facing a 2nd and 10 at the Aggie 32.
Marshall runs to the 13 as the first quarter ends.
We will start the second quarter with the Tigers first and ten at the Aggie 13.

SECOND QUARTER

Grant to the 9 with JJ at QB.
Marshall to the 7.
Mason just short of the first down at the 3.
Going for it on 4th Mason is hit at the 5 but keeps churning to the one!
Mason just short of the goal line for no gain.
Mason goes in untouched but there is a false start.  We can't have that.
Now we're back at the 6.
Marshall is dropped at the 12 as he holds on to the ball too long.  Dang!
We have a penalty that knocks a TD off the board.
Then on 3rd Marshall hit Quan Bray in the end zone for the touchdown.                                                   What a big play!!!  Twelve plays/96 yards/over 6 minutes.  Maybe our best drive of the year.
AUBURN 17  TAMU 14

TAMU starts at the 25.
They've only run 18 plays.  Our offense has run 31 yards.  We have a big advantage in time of possession.
THREE AND OUT AS OUR DEFENSE HARASSES MANZIEL.
The punt goes into the end zone.
Again, a three and out for our defense!
AU on the 20.  Let's keep that offense going.
Now Auburn goes 3 and out quickly.  Our defence holds but our offense sputters as it is prone to do.
Marshall just isn't very accurate in his passing.  We have open receivers.  I don't understand why NM consistently throws behind the receivers.
TAMU starts at their 32.  This is not good, giving the ball right back to Manziel when we seem to have the momentum.
Quickly the Aggies are at the AU 40 running the ball.
First down to the AU 22 running the ball.  Not good.
Our defense holds to a field goal attempt.
The 37 yard FG is good but at least our defense doesn't give up the TD.

AUBURN 17  TAMU 17

5:38 to go in the half.
The Tigers start at the 25 after the touchback.
The Tigers go three and out for the second straight time as the clock winds down to under 4 minutes.
Not good to give them the ball back.
TAMU is at the 26 and 3:36 left and plenty of time left.
Our offense has bogged down the last 2 times and we cannot continue to do this.
First down to the AU 48.
To the AU 45.
To the AU 40 and a first down around the 2 minute mark.
2nd and 9 and a TAMU TO.
1:55 left.
THERE IS A HUGE SACK ON MANZIEL AND TAMU HAS TO PUNT!
Unfortunately the punt dies at the one.
We gotta punch the ball out because TAMU has two timeouts left.
Marshall throws downfield to an open Coates but underthrows him as usual.  Oh my.  Should have a 99 yard TD pass.
3rd and 7 with timeouts left for TAMU.  They use one of them here.
This was set up by that first down long pass but Marshall makes a poor throw.  The result could be the Aggies getting the ball back.
There is a long pass, a fantastic throw, and Coates can't come up with the grab.  There was a TD that Coates can't handle.  Too, bad.  Either Marshall makes a poor throw or our receiver can't catch the ball.  that was a great throw by Marshall.
TAMU is at the AU 42 an on the first play there is the touchdown pass.  This is what happens when we don't take advantage of our offensive opportunitites.  How disappointing.  We are playing them toe-to-toe and our offense goes 3 and out.  Our offense has been inconsistent all year long.  This is nothing new.
This is as heart-breaking end of the first half.  We can't keep this up and give Manziel field positon under these circumstances.

AUBURN 17  TAMU 24

We had the lead but our offense sputters as Coates can't catch a pass that would have been a 96 yard touchdown pass.
AU is at the 30 with 20 seconds left.
Marshall carries and the half will end.
Auburn will get the ball to start the second half as this half ends with 3 straight AU three and outs.
Will our offense show up in the second half?

THIRD QUARTER

Grant does a good return but a block in the back means we start at the 8.
First down to the 19.
First down to the 35.
First down to the AU 47.
The drive stalls at midfield.
We have to punt from the 50.  A long pass to Coates down the field could have been a better throw.
Fair catch at the TAMU 13.
No score on our first possession.
I hope this game doesn't get away from us.  Our defense is going to have to come to the rescue if we are to win this game.  If we get behind by 2 touchdowns the game is probably over.
TAMU starts on their 13.
We were moving the ball on the ground but then there were 2 incomplete passes.
3rd and 7.
TAMU goes three and out on their first possession.
AU will start at their 35  The two teams trade punts on their initial possessions of the half.
The Tigers cross midfield.
First down to the Aggie 37.
Marshall loses 6 sacked with confusion in the backfield.
There is a double screen TD pass to Coates for 43 yards!  Great call, great run by Coates.
We have a ballgame.
A 43 touchdown pass to Coates and we are tied midway thru the third quarter.

AUBURN 24  TAMU 24

6 plays 65 yards.  Not bad.
Good coverage and TAMU is at their 18.
Manziel picks up the first down on a 3rd and 7 with a QB draw.
Manziel is quick but he will also lower his head in a crowd.
Gabe Wright is injured as the Aggies face a 2 and 8.
The Aggies are moving the ball but no big plays so far in this drive.
Manziel scrambles and they are inside AU territory.
They are driving but sort of taking their time.
But there is the big play a 37 yard TD pass to their big receiver Evans.  We keep Manziel in the pocket but he has too much time and finds a receiver well covered but a great play by Manziel.

AUBURN 24  TAMU 31

9 plays 82 yards by the home team.
Bray comes out of the end zone to the AU 40 straight up the field.
JJ throws behind a receiver.
NM overthrows a recever.
We are quickly 3rd and 10.
Another incomplete and we are quickly three and out after good field positon on the KO return.
Those passes were off-kilter.
Fair catch at the TAMU 22.  Not a good punt with the wind at our backs.
Our defense has to rise up.
It's time for a TO.
But there's a long pass to the Auburn 47 on a screen pass.
We're in trouble if they score here.
Manziel QB draw to the Auburn 20 with less than 2 minutes to go in the quarter.
4th and foot and they fake the field goal and make the first down to the 8.  How can we allow that?
The quarter ends with TAMU at 2nd and goal from the 5.  It is not looking good.  We are wearing down.

FOURTH QUARTER

As Pat Dye says, there are no miracles on the football field.  We will lose this game because our offense can't keep up.  For the most part our defense has played pretty good though they are looking to wear down in the final quarter.
On second and 10 after a penaly Manziel runs to the 2 but drops to the ground in pain.
Incomplete pass and it's 4th and goal at the 2.
The short FG attempt is good and TAMU takes a 10 point lead.
It remains to be seen if Manziel can return to the game.

AUBURN 24  TAMU 34

No room for error.  Our offense has to produce now early in the 4th quarter.
No doubts!
The Tigers drive quickly for the touchdown.
There is a long beautiful pass to Coates.
A great run up the middle by CAP.
Marshall runs it in from the 13.
We have ourselves a ballgame!

AUBURN 31  TAMU 34

I lose some words here and pick up with Auburn clinging to a lead late.

AUBURN 45  TAMU 41.

With 43 seconds to go TAMU is at our 18.
Manziel is sacked at the 26.  Timeout TAMU with 28 seconds to go.
Manziel is tackled by Kris Frost at the 21.                                                                                                  Fourth down.  Here is the game.
Last timeout by the Aggies.
On fourth and last gasp Auburn stuffs Manziel for a huge loss.
What a huge win in the history of Auburn football.
Un-be-liev-able!

FINAL SCORE

AUBURN 45  TAMU 41

I can't get enough of it.  What a win.  What a football team!
The offense drove for 2 straight  TDs in the fourth quarter and our defense made the big stop at the end sacking Manziel for a huge loss.  What a game!  What a team!

Texas A & M Preface

Is this a big game or what?  The Tigers go to College Station to play the 7th ranked team in the country with both teams standing at 5 and 1.  The Aggies are a 14 point favorite with the defending Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.  Say what you will, Johnny Football is a fantastic football player to watch in action.  We have the slow down their offense as best we can and play ball control as much as possible.  Hope comes from the fact that TAMU is 13th in the SEC in rushing defense and last in overall defense.  At least we should score on them.  I'll be excited at the start this one.  This game will certainly be a measuring stick for the program.

Western Carolina Postmortem

The Tigers take care of business.  They take care of business in a crisp and efficient manner.  Now it's on to College Station, Texas.

I watched the Aggies beat Ole Miss 41 to 38 last night.  This game is winnable though I don't expect to win out there.  The difference is that our offense will not sustain enough drives.  TAMU will get their points.  I don't think we can quite catch up to them.  One good thing is that we might be able to run the ball on them.  Another good thing is that Manziel got nicked up last night.  Maybe he will not be as mobile as usual.

At least I will watch the game not thinking that we will get embarassed as we were under Chizik.
